By the way, WE ARE ONE is EXO's slogan (in which Suho added "Saranghaja" or let's love) that's why in the lyrics it says "I will make you happy like the saying "we are one". I know Chen helped in making the lyrics by inputting some of his thoughts and that he isn't fluent in Chinese, but Lay speaks korean but doesn't know how to relay the message through the song in proper Korean that's why Chen helped, as far as I know. That's what I meant with the word "translated" since Lay already had the message of the song laid out but doesn't know how to express it in proper Korean because of language barrier. Composers work like that, they create a demo (with temporary lyrics). And yes, it is true that the first release was in Korean since they have to have it approved with SM before releasing them. Making a Chinese one for the approval process doesn't make sense since SM is a Korean company. But yeah, you are certainly correct. Our Chen helped and contributed in this song, it reflects their true feelings that's why I don't understand the hate he is receiving.

Since this is "raw and unfiltered", SM actually didn't want them to release this song but they all, especially Lay, fought for it. It's really beautiful and meaningful. EXO worked so hard to protect their fans and to express their love through their work, even if it's against their company's first thoughts. Also, one of their members, Chanyeol, tattooed the anniversary date of our fandom L-1485 on his body. It is a song for all their fans, EXO-L. They wrote it amidst all heartbreaking moments that happened in the group like the former 3 members' departure. Lay wrote it with Chen & Chanyeol. They wrote it to apologize to the fans for all the heartbreaks & tears, and to ask them to trust them once again, promising they'll protect each & every EXO-L's smiles, and that they'll become stronger so that EXO-L won't cry again, anymore. Plus, for Chanyeol's rap part, he expresses his gratitude to EXO-L because he believe that even if he give his all, he still don't deserve all those love & support that he's receiving but the fans still give him overwhelming love. "Promise" was wrote and composed by Lay -- EXO's remaining Chinese member -- with the Korean lyrics wrote by Chen (an EXO-M member) and rap by Chanyeol. It was created in 2014 after Kris and Luhan left and was released in 2015 after Tao left. The song was meant to explain everything that happened to them in 2014 with the members leaving the company and "breaking their promise" to EXO-L to always be one. (EXO's slogan is "We Are One" -- one as a group and one with their fans. So, when the Chinese members left, the rest of the members felt like as a group they broke that promise.) It's an apology to the fans. EXO is saying they are sorry for causing the fans pain and for making EXO-L sad. Everyone had a really hard time during this time period because everyone felt really blindsided by everything that happened and by the members that left because none of them ever said anything to anyone before they decided to leave. Lay, in particular, as the only Chinese member remaining, had a really hard time because he not only was the only foreign member now, but he had an immense burden with the fact that he had to straddle the line between his loyalty to his country and his loyalty to EXO and SM Entertainment. Lay has always been very grateful for all the opportunities that SM has given him in terms of his life and career, so he always wants to be loyal to EXO and the company, but he is constantly having to defend his loyalty and reassure fans that he has no intention of betraying them the same way they felt the rest of the Chinese members did. As the song says, EXO promises that they will always protect EXO-L and make them smile. And then with the rift between Korea and China,, Lay has had an even harder road to navigate because he was no longer allowed to participate in activities with EXO because they are a Korean group. So he has been away from the group for more than 4 years now. However, he is still working really hard to make sure that EXO-L's know that his separation is not by choice. The only reason he is keeping his distance from the rest of the EXO members is because of the rules of the Chinese government, and yet, many people still see Lay's absence as a betrayal of his loyalty as an EXO member. So he is constantly struggling to prove people wrong, while also following the rules of the Chinese government, which, until recently, discouraged him from even mentioning his relationship with anything to do with Korea. So I take all this as a good sign, and we can only hope that when Lay's schedule becomes less busy that we might get to see him working with EXO again. However, now the EXO members are all starting to go off to serve their military obligations, which has caused the main group of EXO to go on hiatus for a while, it's hard to say when all the stars will align and allow Lay to promote with EXO once again. Promise was composed by Lay, he also wrote the Chinese lyrics to this song. Chen and Chanyeol helped him with Korean lyrics. It's a special song because it was written after 2 of the members left the group. If I'm not mistaken, Tao, the last member to leave the group didn't participate in this stage because he was injured at the time. SM is not known for letting their idols create their own songs (the guys had to go through normal process of choosing lyrics for the few songs where their lyrics were chosen) so they had to actually fight to include this song in their album, especially since it has been so early in their careers (it's called 'EXO 2014', but the original title is 'Promise'). Lay, Chen and Chanyeol wrote and produced this song! Btw, Lay produced and wrote over 100 songs and has his own entertainment company. Chanyeol has his own music studio (Studio 519) and wrote and produced around 30 songs for EXO (including EXO-SC). They have written other songs like Love Shot, Kokobop, She’s Dreaming, etc. All members have done solo work and have participed in writing the lyrics (Suho’s album Self Portrait, Chen’s two albums, Confession by Kai, Go by Sehun, You by Xiumin, That’s okay by D.O.). I don’t know why people still think that EXO never writes their songs. They do it sometimes, but why are they being discredited for their talent when they don’t. Whenever they write or produce, they are the only people credited + one other person maximum. They have so many talents, why do I keep seeing such negative comments everywhere on EXO’s videos. Promise is a very important and special songs for EXOLs it has not been the easiest road for EXO over the years and I think people don’t realize that always and this was written during a very difficult period for the boys once you learn more about their history this will be easier to understand the meaning behind this particular song. watched the last reaction and I can’t 100% remember which live version u watched of those performances but if it was the Japanese concert u have to be careful with Japanese content/videos in general cause they seemed to get blocked/restricted much easier as a whole not just EXO all Japanese content just FYI if u already knew that Ignore this and off course thanks for the EXO reactions

It's Oct 2023 and I still make sure I listen to Promise at least 5-6 times a year and I still get emotional. We are the most loved and adored fandom in this world. I promise never to leave EXO fandom. Sam, if you look closely- a lot of the members are actually crying. Chanyeol, Kai, Suho, Sehun, Lay-I think all of them were either openly crying or trying to hold back their tears. So it's not just their vocals, EXO's whole heart was broken and shown to us EXO-Ls.
