As much as I love Jeff Lynne, equal credit for the brilliance of ELO also resides with Richard Tandy. As Jeff's closest friend, Tandy was there from the beginning until the end (may he RIP) and arranged and wrote as a partner, his keyboard contributions laying the foundation of nearly every song. Jeff himself would admit that it was never all him but their partnership that made ELO.

Toadally agree. Just after lockdown here in UK I bought myself a 1984 Honda Goldwing - a very vast & very silly motorcycle. I dunno why I did that but it made sense at the time 😁 It has a radio cassette. Bringing it 150 miles home the rain finally stopped and the sun came out, glinting on all the ridiculous chrome. As I came over a hill & saw the valley where I live, the radio played Mr Blue Sky. The smile near split my face. Can't hardly remember a moment of such peace n happiness 😁❤

MustardSeedish, you're close, but not correct. During the incessant rain Jeff had terrible writer's block. It was only after it subsided and the clouds parted, revealing incredible blue skies that his block went away and he was suddenly inspired to write, "Mr. Blue Sky", and many other songs on the double album over the next few days. (By the way, he was in a chalet he'd rented in the Swiss Alps for the purpose of writing the album.)

Haaa - Im in Australia - and growing up - I never understood why the Brits always sang songs about sunshine and summer holidays...coming from a land of "sand, sin and sorrow" where summers are brutal and you just wanna hibernate for 5 months..i dfidnt get it. THEN when we married, we went and lived in the UK for 16 months from a Novemeber to March the year after, (back in the 1990's) and one day in summer, after being sun deoprived for months, we were out during summer - and there was not ONE single cloud in the sky. I remebering turning my camera up to the sky and going "click" - and have this odd photo of just plain blue sky - JUST TO PROVE IT WAS POSSIBLE! haaa...my family at home thought it strange. When I first arrived in London, I couldnt understand why there were rows of deck chairs out on Green park with a guy with a money belt and sign "50p for half hour". I said to him, "what sad slapper is gonna PAY to sit in the sun for 30 minutes...????" urgh After 3 months of English winter - I got it!

The robot voice is done with a Vocorder, a keyboard instrument that you sing into, it is a different instrument than the vocal bag that Peter Frampton used on his songs, which was a guitar based based effect. Vocorders were used extensively throughout the '80s, especially on Funk and Dance tunes.

Trivia question for ELO fans: what was the first ELO song that included use of a vocoder?
@bobriemersma2 жыл бұрын
As opposed to a voder, which synthesizes speech from input text or phonemes. We need some examples of that too, it can range from great to comedic.
@chucku002 жыл бұрын
Stevie Wonder, Peter Frampton and Roger Troutman (among others) used a Talk Box, not a vocal bag (there's no such thing). This was a small amplified loudspeaker inside a small and almost hermetic enclosure (box) where a tube protruded as only way out for the sound. The input of the talk box was linked to the line level output of any instrument (or any other audio source, like a headphone jack) Due to the fact pressured air vibrations from the loudspeaker could damage the teeth, people who used it had to be cautious with the way they handled the tube in their mouth. And the most proper name could have been "articulating box" since you only have to articulate the words (or any other resonant effect you could do with your mouth) while not emitting a sound with your voice most of the time. Oh, and BTW it's a Vocoder, not Vocorder.

Anything by ELO from the past always sounded like it was from the future. And even when you listen to them today, they still sound like they are from the future. Timeless :)

Mr Blue Sky was made with a 30 piece orchestra and a 20 person vocal section, Jeff Lynne and his 6 band members.The song Mr Blue Sky features a heavily vocoded voice singing the phrase "Mr. Blue Sky". A second vocoded segment at the end of the song was often interpreted by listeners as "Mr. Blue Sky"; it is actually "Please turn me over" as it is the end of side three, and the listener is being instructed to flip the LP over. This was confirmed by Jeff Lynne on 3 October 2012 on The One Show.

I just got done posting " Little fun fact that I read somewhere ( at least I think it is a fact, someone can double check for me ) : At one point "Ringling Brothers and Barnum Baily Circus" was the worlds largest traveling entertainment thing ( with lions, tigers and elephants , that makes sense ). ELO , because of all their electronic equipment needed for a show was second largest !!" so I can see how this adds to it.

You can hear the Beatles influence in the song at the beginning. It's similar to the Beatles 'A Day in the Life' when they sing "I woke up. Got out of bed..."

In case no one has pointed this out yet, the singer of this band is the "5th man" of the Traveling Wilburys that you were struggling to remember, Jeff Lynne. Both bands are incredible.

The vocal effects about 5:20 on your video is a vocoder. Also, there is a very unique 'instrument' used on this tune. That sound that sounds like a cow-bell, it's a guy hitting a fire extinguisher with a drumstick. As to the 'inspiration' behind Mr. Blue Sky, Lynne said that he was locked away in a Swiss chalet working on the follow-up album to "A New World Record". Apparently it had been very rainy and misty for about two weeks, and then one day the sun broke out from the clouds...and voila...Jeff's inspiration for Mr. Blue Sky! Thanks again for a great video, and for the great sound...love listening loudly on my headphones...all the best to you! P.S. - at the end of the song, when it sounds like the singer is saying "Mr. Blue Sky" again...however, according to Jeff Lynne himself, he actually sings "Please Turn Me Over"...ie., to the next side of the LP. This was a double LP, and Mr. Blue Sky was the last song on side 3. So, turn it over to side 4 and start up with the next ELO tune...Sweet Is The Night. This album, "Out of the Blue" was one of, in not the best selling album ELO put out. PPS....Have you ever listened to ELO's "Roll Over Beethoven"...a rocking tune, that I used to wake my next door neighbor in my college dorm with every morning during my freshman year...lol If Roll Over Beethoven don't wake you up...nothing will!

As I understand it the vocoder was an EMS unit using an electric piano as the carrier.

The song is a happy song especially so on many levels for Jeff Lynn, the leader, principle songwriter, lead singer, producer in the band. He was suffering from writers’ block for months and on holiday in Switzerland where the weather was bleak and it was raining for days until a break in the clouds when the sun shone through became his inspiration for this song.

Music of my childhood. Unique and brilliant band. They had so many hits and every one was truly a great song. Jeff Lynne is a true genius.

The very ending of Mr. blue sky where the tempo slows is actually the beginning of the first song on this album side which is part of a 4 song suite in which all songs blend together-Mr. Blue sky is the last song of the suite. Standing In the Rain is the first song-so the moods of the songs from rain (depression) to sunny blue skies (joy) is also transformative in sound and lyrics on the album side-a must listen when you get the chance-one of the best album sides from the 70s-the electronic voice at the very end of Mr. blue sky says "please turn me over" to continue playing the album or other side of the record..

If you haven't done ELO's 'Telephone Line' yet you absolutely must. The emotion in that song is incredible. It's almost the opposite of this song. Easily my favorite ELO song.

We need some Traveling Wilburys "Handle With Care". They were a supergroup made up of Jeff Lynne (ELO), George Harrison (Beatles), Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison.

Agreed, but NOT UNTIL they've reacted to Roy Orbison, which they have not done yet. Recommended songs from Roy Orbison: "Crying" (original 1961 studio recording) "Oh, Pretty Woman" (1964 studio recording) "You Got It" (studio recording)

If you get the chance, see this band live. They were my first favourite, as a 9 year old I saved up to buy their 1979 LP Discovery, and I never stopped loving them. Seeing them live is a joyous occasion, the crowd is a mix of 10 to 70 year olds just singing along and dancing to the show. Much love to you two.

Born in 61...been a fan since I was a teenager. This has always been one of my ELO favs, along with "Wild West Hero"; however even since Guardians of the Galaxy 2, I can only see Baby Groot dancing to this from now on. Footnote: the clanging sound is the drummer Bev Bevan hitting a fire extinguisher that was in the studio.

The group is famous for using orchestral instuments in rock music. They have been adapted to use electronic pickups, like an electric guitar rather than relying on microphones. BTW the 'talkbox' is called a Vocoder and yes that was a Cello.

This is my fav ELO song. Great combo of orchestra instrument with rock band instruments. They have such a unique sound. Not really hippie era music, but it is late 70s. I never tire of hearing this song. Can’t help but tap my foot and drum my hands with it. With the acoustic music you get lower sounds coming out of the larger instruments. Like a violin is small so it hits the higher notes comparable to a soprano voice, the viola is a little lower like an a lot voice, the cello is even lower sounds like tenor, the bass violin is very low like a basso voice. If that is helpful. In electric instruments you can tune it to whatever range you want but I love acoustic instruments for their richness.
@HenryCabotHenhouse32 жыл бұрын
This is actually the fourth movement of the Concerto for a Rainy Day which took up one whole side of the Out of the Blue album (1/4 of the two LP's). You should listen to the whole concerto, maybe not as a reaction, but on your own. Yes, ELO does use many orchestral instruments (cello, violins, tubular bells, etc.) that's why Jeff Lynn picked the name ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), As for the different stringed instruments of the orchestra, you can relate them to voices of the choir, Violins are your sopranos or high tenors, violas are altos or tenors, cellos are baritones and the upright bass are the basses.
