They were unique with their sound. Jeff Lynne was their singer, and basically all around guru. He was their producer, arranger, and wrote well over 90% of the songs. They have the distinction of having the most top 40 hits (20), without ever having a #1. Not sure what you've already reacted to, but Livin Thing, Telephone Line and Evil Woman are must listens.

ELO had a sound that transcended decades. You've done five of their songs so far (this, "Last Train to London", "Evil Woman", "Mr. Blue Sky", and "Tight Rope"), all from their 70s discography... but they had some awesome 80s tunes that you should also check out. "Xanadu" (feat. Olivia Newton John), "All Over the World", "Hold On Tight", and one of my personal favorites, "Rock and Roll is King". This was one of ELO's earliest hits, after Jeff Lynne's father said his music had no melody. So Lynne focused on that for the next album. Great next songs from ELO would include "Sweet Talkin' Woman," "Turn to Stone," "Don't Bring Me Down," and "Rockaria!", an out-and-out blending of rock and opera/classical.

Wait! Have they heard "Evil Woman" by ELO yet? (I do love ELO, though and have several of their albums.) That song popularized ELO in the USA, and came prior to these other songs. One of the reasons you guys are so popular is you are on top of your game with your choices of bands and songs to react to. ELO is another awesome band from the 70s and one of those bands that literally have well over twenty amazing songs you could listen to. I'll have to see what songs you've already reacted to but I'll add a nice ELO hits list shortly. Lead singer is the great Jeff Lynn who wrote and sang everything. At one time he was producing Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan all around the same time. This is how the Travel Wilburys were created which he was in and produced. Just a genius for sure. Thank God he started finally touring again just before Covid hit. He'll be touring again as soon as things get to normal. Jeff Lynne, a genius in his genre, went to classical music school. To have named his group Electric Light ORCHESTRA was not without reason. He recovered, from scholarly music, what is called the "full sound". In short, although ELO was not a symphony orchestra, Jeff Lynne arranged his musical composition so that the result sounded like the full sound of a symphony or philharmonic orchestra. Thanks to you two.
@longoan Жыл бұрын
Jeff Lynne didn’t go to music school. He was self taught. He doesn’t know how to read or write music - he doesn’t need to, music is in him and he is in the music. Amazing creator.
@sagitt1856 Жыл бұрын
@@longoan I thought I was specific enough, but it seems not and I apologize for that. I stated, because this is confirmed by some of his high school friends, that he had "gone" to a classical music school but in the sense of "attending" without attendance (besides, he was not registered and gave up very quickly); I did not want to suggest that he was a graduate or even that he had followed a virtuoso course. And I totally agree with your formula: "[...] music is in him and he is in the music". Sincerely.

Lynne has also produced the Beatles, including the 'found' tape "Free As A Bird" by John Lennon after his death. Also Lynne was an integral member of the Travelling Wilburys with The Big O, George Harrison, Tom Petty, et al.

I listen to ELO a lot and they remain one of my favourite bands. Jeff Lynne is an absolute musical genius - in terms of musical ability, production, lyrics, arrangements, etc. He has a real mastership of it all and even now at the age of 74, his voice is still brilliant as you can see from recent live videos. They have a very unique sound and in terms of their overall place in music lore, I think they serve as somewhat of a bridge between The Beatles and Queen. Definitely a band worth checking out even more on your channel. This particular song is a popular one but having watched a few reactions to it on YT, not many people seem to have noted the dreamlike, ethereal quality of it all - from the more muted singing to the tone of the instruments - so was great to hear Amber note that. It's a very skillfully put together song.
