The most interesting part is that the first part leads the audience to believe that it's from Ashfur's point of view, and it's some kind of AU where he attacks during the fire scene. However, the ending reveals that is clearly not the case, he was still killed by the river by Hollyleaf. Which contextualizes the entire thing as being Hollyleaf just spinning a story to herself about how her killing him was self defense and she had no choice, rather than the plain murder it actually was.

Ashfur was still willing to kill all of them if Squirrel didn't speak up. He also was in on a plot to kill Firestar. Granted when Holly killed him it really wasn't out of self defence, he wasn't trying to kill Holly then, but he still clearly had the nerve to kill. Everyone can be a good person if they try. However not everyone wants to try, and you can't risk the lives of others waiting for a wicked person like Ashfur to change. Squirrel could of told her father what happened and if Ashfur tried to call out her family she could of easily said she lied. Or even explained things to Firestar before things got out of hand. Ashfur at that point had proven himself dangerous and willing to hurt others. Firestar would of absolutely banished him for attempting to kill his daughter's kits.

@@autumngalix4616 Ashfur was a real piece of work, but like you said, when Hollyleaf killed him, he wasn't a physical threat and could have been handled other ways. Certainly Hollyleaf could have just told Firestar about it, as you say. Even if the clan believes Ashfur's words, the most Hollyleaf stands to lose is her pride. But that's precisely it. Hollyleaf was vain and arrogant, and she couldn't handle their pride and honor being besmirched by Ashfur. Hence why she found murder to be preferable, and why the video is interesting in so far as it's very clearly how Hollyleaf PERCEIVES things. From her perspective, Ashfur attacking their honor by saying that they're bastards is equivalent to if not worse than if he tried to physically kill them, and so killing Ashfur in turn is self-defense. It's this same twisted mentality that is why Hollyleaf is on the verge of murdering Leafpool until Leafpool convinces her that she would suffer more being left alive. Ashfur was an awful cat who had it coming, but Hollyleaf's actions were a terrible thing to do as well solely for the sake of her pride.

That also explains why Hollyleaf has such a prominent role when she appears earlier, and why her brothers weren't there in the fire scene. In that moment, all that mattered to her were Squirrelflight, Ashfur, and the world, the _lie_ she had lived, falling apart around her.

This can be seen from early on, such as when she trained as a healer despite not being good at it or really liking it, but instead because it was what she perceived as the most helpful for her Clan, or when she was upset to learn that Lionpaw had been secretly meeting with Heatherpaw. When she learned the truth, it wasn't just her trust that was broken, it was everything she had. All that was important to her, all that she thought she had, was torn away. What did she have now? Not her mother, not when she had broken the warrior code. Not her father, not when she couldn't know if he had been aware. Not any of her extended family, not when she knew the truth, the ugly secret, they didn't. She knew she had lost everything, and she couldn't bear to have the same scorn and hatred surrounding her as that which was within her. Killing Ashfur was wrong, but it was a choice made in a desperate situation.

The fact he unsheathed his Claws when he was hugging SquirrelFlight to truly show how obsessive he was is absolutely amazing. And the foaming at the mouth when he said "Lover" as if he was truly heart broken and was screaming till the point he was out of breath to cause the foaming before hand. i like how in this pmv, only 4 cats are shown. ashfur, squilf, brambleclaw, and hollyleaf. this is because I’d imagine there were only 3 cats ashfur actually paid attention to, and that was squirrelflight, the girl who “broke his heart”, brambleclaw, the one who “stole her away from him”, and hollyleaf, the one who killed him. he’s so blinded by his possessiveness and rage he doesn’t even realize there are other cats around him, one’s who cared about him- he chose to focus on the very few bad things of his life and let that consume him instead of realizing how much he had. he didn’t suffer because one girl rejected him, he just made a huge deal out of it because he didn’t care for anyone else. therefore I’d like to imagine no one else is shown in this pmv because he’s so blinded by a woman rejecting him he can’t even realize there’s other cats who cared about him, such as ferncloud and cloudtail. he had no realization that his life was a good one, he just tried to make it into a bad one.

Actually, there are 2 more cats in 0:27 who I think are Cloudtail, his adoptive brother and Ferncloud, his sister. But I'm not sure. Ashfur's siblings care about him and are there for him, yet he still chooses to focus only on Squirrelflight, Brambleclaw and Hollykit

squilfs eyes are canonically green, I like how she has amber eyes in this since it looks like a subtle nod to how she has eyes for bramble claw, who's eyes we never see here, it also shows how much hollyleaf felt disconnected to squilf upon finding out, when squilf disowned her to save her despite how it was squilf who raised her, or maybe squilf actually has leaf pools eyes here, Holly's bio mom

composition and visual storytelling has always been a strong suit of your work... you always seem to sense what is and isn't relevant to the plot of each video, and its really cool to see that present with your choice here to streamline the story by cutting out jay and lion and also that excellent hard cut from ashfur's attack at the fire to holly's killing him at the fire. tbh your animatics in the past have held up as fully-complete works in their own right because of this sixth-sense towards visual storytelling alone, so to see a fully polished work like this where you ALSO add your incredible ability to create atmosphere through colour and experiment with more painter-ly background styles into the mix was really such a treat to watch. and, as others have already said, the raw emotion that comes through in all the little details (the foam at ash's mouth, every single close-shot of their expressions) is phenomenally effective too. was very excited to see this complete and it did not disappoint - can't wait to see what's next!

I’ll come back and write a more in-depth comment on how much I like about this piece (the background detailing is first of all gorgeous and second of all the scenery itself is just beautifully imagined)
