Ashfur Pigeon AMV [gore warning]

And it's done and UP.
It's been done for a few weeks but I wanted to wait to upload it since it was a school project... When I get my grade back I'll let you know what I got!
So basically the project prompt was 'identity', everyone did pretty different stuff, and my stupid ass decided that I should make a 2 and half minute video in less than 2 months... Oof. Warriors has been pretty important to who I am as an artist- so I got the okay to make a Warriors video. Since it's for education purposes it falls under fair use so yaaaaaay.
That's why some bits look so rough, but I'm pretty proud with how it turned out over all!
The song is Pigeon, by Cavetown. I'm actually gong to a Cavetown/mxmtoon concert in December! I'm so excited. I really want to try and have more experiences rather than spend all my money on takeout...

Not sure if there is a deeper story here with more details that would prove your point, but just from this summation and video, this is literally like taking the entire range of colors and claiming that its evil because there is black in it too. Not a fan of taking a concept which is defined by its complexity and degrading it to something is a simple as a rake. Some love is selfish, other is dominant, some cant get over a break up or how it has been done, some yet again resent their partners for their incapacity to at least empathize with them. TL;DR: The range of emotions displayed in the video and the way it shifts and turns is not something as simple as "lul he's treating her like prey", the mere notion of it is like comparing Rembrand's works to a smiley :)

The way ashfur is portrayed in this video has me shaking. This is one of the best ways I've seen his character portrayed with such haunting imagery and symbolism. The maimed squirrels was great but when he used the fox trap on them/ stabbed the squirrel in the heart, I felt it symbolized how helping hawkfrost kill firestar for him was to strike squirrelflight where she was weakest; her family. And that grew to the fire scene where squirrelflight is his prey. But after the secret is revealed, he doesn't want squirrelflight for himself. He wants to burn and ruin everything around her, and to me, that is an amazingly accurate depiction of a possessive character.

Jealously is a strong emotion for some people, a reallllly strong emotion for some people, and from what it looks like in some amvs, squirrelflight isn’t entirely innocent either. She made him have feelings for her then left him for someone else. Yeah maybe murder is a bit far (even though warriors society and human society are not the same and shouldn’t be held to the same standards since cats murder each other all the time), but he still only did it because he had his heart broken by her. (Again I haven’t read the books so if I am saying inaccurate stuff just remember I only watch amvs, This is just what I’ve gathered based on many different videos)

I think one of the most unsettling parts about this amv that not a lot of ppl have brought up is how ashfur fantasizes about BRAMBLE killing Squirrel after the reveal. I’ve seen before how people go from love to just seeking any way their rage is justified and that person just ends up getting hurt from whatever, and it’s sickingly accurate how he sees her mate hurting her as something earned and joyous to him. You portray emotional horror through characters well across a ton of stories, btw - even subtle things at times hit hard in your videos.

I just want to say how much I love the scene at 2:13, when Ashfur is looking into the water. The way his claws are unsheathed make it look like he is holding her reflection down underwater. And the way he looks down at it, his head held high, is just so amazing a scary at the same time!

Ashfur is looking down on Squirrelflight and her family with a disturbed expression, cut to Squirrel and the rest looking at the screen with blank faces. OMG I just noticed something!! So you know ashfur is the ‘blue’ cat in this Amv? And squirrelflight is all the maimed squirrels, well at 0:14 the normal squirrel drops a BLUE SEED, then it cuts to squirrelflight with brambleclaw being all loveydovey, which is probably when ashfur was finally like, alright she doesn’t love me. And she lets him go! ‘Drops him in a way!’ Like the squirrel drops the seed. Also having it a seed instead of a full grown nut is basically (in my opinion) saying there was never any growth there? He cared more about being in a position of power over Squirrelflight instead of Squirrelflight and those around him more. This is shown when he tells Jayfeather and Alderheart to go to moonpool and consult with Starclan to see if they should heal Sunrise even though they haven’t been able to contact Starclan for like… m o o n s… So yeah Ashfur would also be a bad choice. But he’d be a better choice if she *HAD* to choose between Ashfur or Bramblestar Bramblestar acts abusive towards Squirrelflight nearly every day but Ashfur constantly worries over her, protects her from things she shouldn’t be protected from, and tries to make decisions for her.

@@caseyrobinson4699 Regardless if his possessiveness stems from abandonment issues or not, it doesn't change the fact that it warped into something more toxic. He didn't care about her well being once he saw that she wasn't "his" and that's not a good mentality to have with anyone. There's a difference between handling abandonment in a healthy way vs a destructive way. I feel like Daisy is another character who may have abandonment issues, since she notes that the other barn tom cat liked Floss better than her. She is forced to leave the safety of her home when her kits are at risk of being killed by the twolegs. She latches onto Cloudtail as the one ThunderClan cat who seems to be able to protect her, but eventually backs off once she realizes he's already happy with Brightheart and her desire to be with him would jeopardize her friendship with both of them. (I think her jumping into a relationship with Spiderleg afterwards might have been a bit hasty, but that's a whole different topic.) Ashfur on the other hand, sees Squirrelflight as a stubborn piece of prey that he's lost power over. He is obsessive over his idea of her and never tries to talk with her face to face, only continue to become convinced his concept of her in private. In the fire scene he mocks Squirrelflight for not having Brambleclaw around to protect her (despite Squirrelflight being shown to be one of the most independent cats in the whole series). Ashfur's perception of Squirrelflight is clearly distorted. If he can't have her, then he would rather destroy her, and make her feel the same misery he put himself into. He could have moved on, and/or continue to find value in their friendship, but instead he cannot put aside his own selfishness to care about her agency as a person.

I LOVE THIS AMV!! The emotions are all apparent and clear and you can see what they're feeling or thinking just by looking at them! All the designs are distinct and unique, and Squirrelflight looking back at him and her face being squirrel was a brilliant idea. This was a brilliant idea for your 'identity' project, because Ashfur was so distraught and was so obsessed that Squirrelflight _became his identity._ He wasnt Ashfur anymore, all he was, was one thing, and that was obsessed. The symbolism was great, and I love how at the end the soft color palette turned gray, to imply death, as a corpse loses its color over time. The surrealism and symbolism wasnt overbearing, and it was great. It was a perfect balance between surrealism and reality.

While this isn't exactly Ashfur, when Ashfur imagines what Brambleclaw is going to do, the squirrel's belly is ripped open, sorta like Tigerstar's death (especially since Bramble is related to Tigerstar). Now, idk about the lizard one, but it might have something to do with some character. Just noticed that and thought it was cool!

I have a lot to say about this It’s probably the most accurate and interesting Amv, pmv, or map of Ashfur I’ve ever seen and ever will see. The fact that he murders squirrels, finds nails, and pins them all to a tree to plot his revenge is horrifying. And the fact that it’s squirrels too. “Most cats think I blame Brambleclaw for stealing you from me, but they’re wrong. My quarrel is with you Squirrelflight, it always has been.” Ashfur is so mentally broken and angry he kills squirrels and pins them up for him to gaze at to symbolize what he wants to do with Squirrelflight. Most likely before the fire happened his plans were to kill Squirrelflight and hang her up there, just hanging by a nail in her neck, up with all the squirrels on that very tree because she loved Brambleclaw more. It sends chills down my spine. And when Brambleclaw, Squirrelflight, Hollykit, Jaykit, and Lionkit and stare blankly at the screen I believe that’s Ashfurs point of view. As he passes by he imagines misery of the kits and Squirrelflight and “They could have been happier, we could have been happier if only she had the brains to realize what she’s done, what she’s doing, and what she’s gotten herself into.” The fire scene too. Ashfur enters the fire and Squirrelflight looks at him but she is the squirrel. She’s the pain and the hurt that he feels. She’s a representation of his original plans and “She should die. All she causes is pain and suffering for us all. She should be hung up in the tree by the neck.” When Hollyleaf kills Ashfur you see the “What have I done” look in his eyes. He made Hollyleaf, Jayfeather, and Lionblaze suffer when he believes it should have been Squirrelflight. This is amazing and I’m so proud of you for creating this. I forgot to mention the colors. They’re all pink to symbolize the happiness in life they feel, how it’s going they’re way, but Ashfur is blue. He’s the opposite. He’s not happy, nothing is going his way and he lives for revenge because it’s all he can count on.

The squirrel imagery is gorgeous and I would've never thought to use her name in such a... imaginative way. Like the squirrels in the traps or Ash stabbing one on the tree. It's like every squirrel he kills, he loses a bit more of his own sanity. At first you could just see heartbreak but as the video goes on you just see him break apart just like in the books. It's also so smooth, I don't see a singular flaw. If you dont get a good grade on this I'm suing this is so beautiful and conveys such emotion but it's so cute and soft? Here's some bits and pieces of my thoughts because if I was to praise everything great about this, I'd just... explain the whole video. I just want you to know that this is the best take of Ashfur I've ever seen someone create and I can't help but keep rewatching this amazing piece of art! And I love the way you've used especially Squirrelflight's name and squirrels for more symbolism! 0:34 The lizard matches the lyrics of the song, but is there more to it? One explanation to lizards and their symbolism is that if you see one on your feet, it means bad luck... But I wouldn't consider everything that happened to Ashfur just bad luck since a lot is due to his own actions. It matches the color of Squirrelflight's eyes and escapes from Ashfur, just like Squirrelflight does a few seconds later. Maybe that lizard is just to tie the visuals to the lyrics more, but I like to play with the idea of it having an extra meaning. 0:55 I like to wonder if that scene actually happened. Did Ashfur and Squirrelflight ever cuddle like that? Does Ashfur miss the memory of what they had for a short while, or is he dreaming of what they could've have? 1:21This scene CREEPS ME OUT. I wonder if their family is portrayed at first like they are and then shown through Ashfur's eyes, judging him by their existence? Or looking dull and lifeless as Ashfur can't see them as individual persons? 1:34 This scene ALSO CREEPS ME OUT. The way Ashfur is seeing Squirrelflight as a squirrel, as a prey, as something he's been slaughtering all this time... Just, wow. That's really scary take. And the following scene of him imagining what Brambleclaw will do to her when he finds out... The expressions of Ashfur are brilliant and really tell about his state of mind and that whole scene gave me chills the first time I saw it. 2:16 Ashfur is nearly in the same pose as in the fire scene when he was in control of what would happen to Squirrelflight. Maybe he still feels in control of her as he stares at the reflection of the Squirrelflight? But he doesn't seem happy. The chances are nothing can make him happy anymore at this point. 2:19 This is such a stunning image on itself! Ashfur turning away from the tree could portray him during the moment of his death, but maybe it's also that he's turning away because he can't gain anything from Squirrelflight anymore? He's taken everything from her he can. He's made her life as miserable as he can by letting her live through the pain she'll face upon the revelation of the truth of her family. Also, there's two trees - maybe it could represent how Ashfur portrays himself and Squirrelflight? I also like to hold a second thought about the whole death of Ashfur - what if he knew that Hollyleaf was there, but he just let her kill him? What if he wanted to die, but it was easier to let Hollyleaf kill him? Besides, it would just bring more pain to Squirrelflight that way. The end image of Ashfur with shackles is still kinda unclear to me. My main thought is that he realized everything bad he'd done AFTER his death and he's tied to his sins, unable to forget everything he's done. Another way to look at it is that it could be an AU where he doesn't go to Starclan nor Dark Forest - he's stuck somewhere inbetween, never given the final rest. But the first idea feels personally more accurate to me - it could be wrong, but that's my best guess for now. Maybe I'll get better ideas when I watch this video in future more times. WOW I didn't mean for this comment to be THIS long but what you can do when you get really invested in something as amazing as this video :D

For the end, shackles often symbolize a person being bound/limited to their abilities, that something is holding them back, that their unhappy with what their doing, and that their emotions prevent or control their actions. Which describes Ashfur to a T in many ways. His emotions control how he views others and how he portrays his actions. His emotions are holding him back, which also makes him bound to their own abilities. You can see in the end Ashfur has tears, showing him unhappy with what he has done and what he had planned to do.

Ashfur is already such a scary villain because of how much he feels like a real person, but this AMV drives it home. Watching this literally makes my chest ache, your portrayal of Ashfur was so genius and incredible, and out of the countless Warriors AMV's I've consumed since I was a kid, this is one of the best. I wasnt able to comment on this the day it came out cause ITS SO GOOD and I wanted some time to really think and process it before i said anything. And I got a lot to say. All of the emotion and atmosphere put into the storyboard not only carried over to the final product but it intensified in a way that really struck me. I felt like I had some decently high expectations but somehow i underestimated just how powerful the motions would be, especially in the squirrel mutilation scenes. The little smirk ashfur does at the fire scene as he pictures brambleclaw in his place gave me chills. Ok my theory (I haven’t Read a single warriors book so hear me out) Ashfur and squirrelflight broke upp(??) This made ashfur a mix of emotions, mainly anger and sadness towards her. He then starts mutilating squirrels because they remind him of her. Then at the end, he convinces everyone she’s a bad person, and everyone leaves her. Then later one of squirrelflight’s kittens kills ashfur.

Analysis/Breakdown: Ashfur is pale blue when everything and everyone else is pale pink, symbolizing his difference from the others. Ashfur is wondering the woods (presumably hunting) staring jealously at Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw. He sees a squirrel on the ground but doesn’t hunt it at first. Cut between Ashfur mutilating squirrels and Squirrelflight cuddling with Brambleclaw, his other clan mates having relationships (his foster brother Cloudtail with Brightheart, his sister Ferncloud with Dustpelt, and his nephew Spiderleg with Daisy). He sees a lizard skitter away over a dead squirrel. The squirrel turns to Squirrelflight who looks between him and Brambleclaw apologetically, before smiling and running to Brambleclaw. Ashfur opens his eyes to Squirrelflight choosing him, they then cuddle, before it is revealed that this is merely a fantasy of Ashfur’s when Squirrelflight morphs into a rock. Leafpool (Squirrelflight’s sister) is pregnant and glances over her shoulder, cut to a dead squirrel. Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw are being cute, cut to Leafpool telling Squirrelflight she’s pregnant (which is forbidden because she’s a medicine cat and not allowed to have kits, and also the father is from another clan). Ashfur’s angry face, then a squirrel in the fox trap (symbolizing when Ashfur tried to help Hawkfrost kill Firestar in a fox trap as a way to hurt Squirrelflight). Cut to Squirrelflight lying and telling Brambleclaw she’s expecting his kits. Back to Firestar in the trap. Ashfur nails a squirrel to a tree using the trap. Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight are happy with their kits, but Brambleclaw doesn’t know they aren’t his and Squirrelflight’s biologically. Ashfur nailing the squirrel. Ashfur looking off a cliff. Brambleclaw, Squirrelflight, and their kids being sweet, before making blank faces toward the camera. Cut to ThunderClan camp burning, and the backgrounds are now grey. Squirrelflight and her children are trapped and Ashfur sees his chance for revenge. Squirrelflight turns around and her face morphs into that of a squirrel. Ashfur sees her as nothing more than prey. Ashfur reveals his plan to have her kits die in the fire to hurt her. Squirrelflight reveals the truth about her kits being adopted to him in an attempt to save her kits. Hollyleaf, Jayfeather, and Lionblaze are shocked and betrayed. Ashfur is pleased by the revelation, thinking that he can use this information to turn Brambleclaw on Squirrelflight (as demonstrated in him imagining Brambleclaw ripping apart a squirrel). He lets them go, but Squirrelflight’s kits now feel betrayed by her for lying to them. Ashfur heads to the water and sees Brambleclaw in the distance. He smirks before frowning and looks in the water, seeing Squirrelflight crying in a reflection. Hollyleaf is in the bushes behind him. She jumps out and kills him in order to keep anyone from finding out that she and her siblings are half-clan. Cut to the tree where Ashfur has nailed several squirrels. Hollyleaf lifts her head from Ashfur’s body and a speck of blood on her muzzle mirrors a mole on Squirrelflight’s face. Ashfur’s spirit (which is pale grey) is standing above his body, wearing shackles.

Where do I start, theres so many great thing about this ahhhhhh! I love Ashfurs and Squirrelflights designs, they remain close to the classic canon description but have this personal toutch. The pallete you used is so good to the eye, and the expressions are really strong (Leafools panic, Brambleclaws tears of joy at the three especially). My favourite part is 1:48 to 1:52. In such little time you perfectly show Ashfurs mind spinning with though, processing new information and deciding on the best way to hurt Squirrelflight and satisfy his twisted hunger for revenge. i neeeeeever comment on videos but god i just have to gush about this one. the symbolism and imagery are beautifully chilling, particularly at the end when the trees full of squirrel corpses are shown. i also ADORE ashfur's expressions from 1:49 to 1:51. other people before me have pointed it out, but the way ashfur's possessiveness is portrayed here combined with his dehumanization (i know she's a cat but still lmao) of squirrelflight is reminiscent of real misogyny and abuse in a way that makes him feel genuinely scary. on top of that, your art style and the palette you used are both gorgeous. amazing work!

This entire video hit me really hard. The symbolism with the squirrel and the seed, and Ashfur venting all his anger out through killing squirrels. Especially with him being possessive and toxic towards her, not seeing her as a cat but something that belonged to him. The lyrics “stay like you’re supposed to do” hit HARD. But the part that got me the worst (even worse than the blank faces and Squirrelflight’s squirrel face) was 1:50. Just how he thought if he revealed Squirrelflight’s secret that Brambleclaw would murder her and THAT was what fueled him was really powerful. He never wanted her all to himself, or even for Brambleclaw to leave her; what he wanted was to take away everything she cared about and hurt her like she had “hurt “ him (I have that In parentheses because their relationship never bloomed into anything and she just didn’t like him) And the part at the end, where he turned away from the dead squirrels, it was practically him saying “I’m done here. I’ve taken away everything and now she’s no better than dead”.

I didn't notice this the first time i watched it but can i just say how well you made the animation fit the song ? Especially in the '' stay how you're suppose to do '' parts. The first one plays with Ashfur imagining Squirrelflight staying with him, and the fact it says '' how you're SUPPOSE to do '' makes this part so much scarier because it just shows even more how he sees her not as a cat but something that was made and is suppose to be with him, for the rest of her life, no matter the circumstances. And then the second part plays with Ashfur seeing Squirrelflight sad after the events of the fire, he's basically implying that she is suppose to be sad and should be sad because she left him, there is nothing else in her life of valor except for him and this is what she deserves. And if that isn't attention to detail idk what is.

Also i just noticed, during the storm and all the events after the storm ashfur is stuck in a gray background, i think this is him caring about nothing else but his revenge, but either way intentional or not i think it was a really nice detail :)

Mango licious sure! Squirrelflight is trapped in a fire with her kits, and Ashfur sees his chance, and blocks their only exit away from the fire. He threatens to kill Squirrelflight’s kits, but she says they aren’t her kits. So Ashfur is satisfied that her family now hates her

I am going to be forever angry that Ashfur ended up in Star Clan and the only explanation was "he loved too much." Like... fucking WHAT. He tried to kill Firestar and Squirrelflight's (adopted, but still) kits! BECAUSE HE WAS SALTY THAT SHE DIDN'T CHOOSE HIM. That's not loving too much, that's straight-up abusive and insane.

This is just so... I have no idea how to describe this! Psychotic?? The squirrel hallucination stuff gave me chills, it really showed how confusing and upside down Ashfur’s life became! And the song fits it perfectly, it sounds so dead and rhythmic, and the color pallet really helped convey that emptiness. I love it so much, I can’t stop watching it! I can practically feel the insanity that crept up on him bit by bit, this portrays him much better than the books did!!

After seeing this MASTERPIECE about 5 times now, I think I’m able to have a proper opinion. I have been in the warriors fandom for a while and I’d say this is the most symbolic amvs/pmvs I’ve seen. I was simply in awe how the squirrels tied into the setting, plot, and theme of the video. And, even after rewatching this, I still get chills every time the shot cuts to Ashfur walking away from the gored squirrels staked to the trees. Other than the symbolism, your animation flows sooooo smoothly and along with the main characters in the amv, the background characters have the most exquisite facial expressions. Speaking of expressions, the moment of Squirrel x Bramble’s family looks at the camera with blank faces and the moment when Squirrel’s face becomes a squirrel continues to remind you that the mood of the amv isn’t all cheery and joyful, but instead tension-filled and somewhat angry. Also, you know you see a gifted artist when you can tell the characters apart even though almost all of them are shades of light pink. Keep up the amazing work!
