There is an ENORMOUS skill gap between diving, and cave diving, and a big gap between cave diving and cave exploration(where no lines exhist and no maps have been made.) Most people dont realize how dangerous it is. There are only a handful of cave explorers in the world that are skilled enough to do it semi regularly and still be alive.

@@Blakenew127As the commenter above said, mapping an unexplored cave brings a lot of unknown risks that cogld be accounted for otherwise. I'm sure plenty of cave divers are perfectly happy not taking that risk in what is already an activity with very little room for errors and sticking to caves where the risks are known beforehand. The same distinction between those differing wants and skill levels can be seen in many different sports, e.g. skiing on a premade slope vs freeskiing, indoor bouldering vs outdoor bouldering, hiking vs mountaineering, et cetera.

As an ex-scuba diver with many years of experience, the primary mission of putting a dive-line (life line) into a place where you have no direct access to a safe and unobstructed ascent above you (and an umbilical from you to it if you feel unsafe) should be something of a no brainer... Being an action junkie is all cool, being reckless is not. Also, plan the dive and dive the plan. If you're having second thoughts when you are there regardless of life line or not, go back. There are no medals awarded anyways.
@brad4058
@brad4058 Жыл бұрын
On the contrary, there is something awarded for this act of stupidity. It's called the Darwin Award. It's a prestigious award amongst the stupid and is an award that is given to the most dumbest of the dumb. Those who earn this award are made into shining examples of what not to do if you're thinking of doing something absolutely crazy for the thrill of it. It's usually accompanied by death and sometimes the most bleakest and despairing of deaths.

@Blakenew127
@Blakenew127 Жыл бұрын
It actually wasn’t reckless, in the sense it was a very well organised and pre planned diving, like all the previous ones he did that made him break records. However, because he was trying again to overcome a record mark, the diving would be extreme and the risks were fully understood by him, his divers partner and their team that was outside monitoring. They could mitigate the risks to a certain point, but to achieve that level of depth, the danger would be present regardless. Anyway, he died in a deep dive and not in a cave dive. If you are only cave diving for sport (not to make history) and if you follow the basic preventive rules, it is safe to do it

Experienced or a novice, people always overestimate their skills and experience and push too far or cut corners in prep and safety. They often lie to their guides if using one as well. What's that saying about pride again?

@@azzy9293I think in a way, routine also plays a role. '"I've done it some many times like that, what could go wrong?" I'm kind of assuming, since I've never cave dived and I have no intention of doing so, but had they been properly trained, they'd probably know to follow safety protocols and wouldn't have gone in without the rope. Just because a firefighter who always wears their protective gear, never caught fire, doesn't mean they should go into house fires without gear.

Bodies initially sink, then as gasses from decomposition accumulate a period of “neutral buoyancy” occurs, this when bodies seem to be moved the most by currents. Getting lost on the surface is nerve-wracking enough. Getting lost, blinded by silt and darkness, with limited air and battery power in an enclosed space underwater is beyond words for me. I've listened to many of these stories - spelunking and cave-diving alike - and it never ceases to amaze me how willing people are to take that next step into the abyss. A survivor of another incident likened it to a monster that will get you if you aren't vigilant enough. If you stay too long, you're never going to leave. I don't blame any of these people for their fate, but I think hubris and complacency puts many people at odds with doom. Same thing happens on the peaks of mountains (summit fever). Once you've gone so far, you don't want to turn back. What's just a little further going to do if I've been just fine thus far? I'll be okay..... and then it happens. I hope their demise was brief and as peaceful as it possibly could have been.

I think it actually takes iron control not to succumb to the “just a little bit further” way of thinking. Force yourself to fully engage the rational part of your brain and coldly examine what emotions and instinct are telling you. The latter can provide a useful shortcut but they can also lead you greatly astray.

This reminds me of a guy I saw rock climbing with no equipment. I was with either the rock climbing club or summer camp. We were taking turns climbing up and down a cliff - memory says like 20 ft. A ways down to my left (slightly downhill) the cliff was 30 ft - and there was a book-shaped cliff. The catch is, it was wider at the bottom than the top. This absolute mad man, who I have no doubt was an outstanding climber just walks up to it - all alone, no harness, not even a pad he rolls out under it in case he falls - and climbs up this shit. I'm glad he enjoys the thrill, but would the accomplishment really be so reduced if you used some safety equipment?

My deepest was 110 and I had such extreme anxiety worrying about safety, that I won’t do it anymore. If I can’t enjoy the underwater scenery or wreck at 60 ft, then I just pass. The two smartest decisions they're done is having someone outside who knows where they are and allowing that one guy to turn back when he didn't trust in his skills to continue. Always have someone who knows where you are and when you plan to come back. They are your lifeline if something happens and you can't leave on your own! Always turn back if you don''t trust your skills to continue! Always try to stay calm, because if you panic you only use up your air faster and might cause the cave to silt out, taking away any visibility! And the most important rule: Don't go into a cave if you don't know where to go!
@aprilt7080
@aprilt7080 Жыл бұрын
I can’t believe those 2 went ahead when one of their dive buddy decided to turn back! He did so with a very valid reason, which the other two just ignored. It’s one thing to be caught up in the excitement of a trip. But when one in the group did a reality check and pointed out the risk, if they were even a tiny bit doubtful of the wisdom of diving in a dark cave without guide rope, that would have been the trigger for them to ALL turn back. The two went ahead despite clear warning, It’s inexcusable. The survivor must live with the guilt of being responsible for the death of his companion. This isn’t an “accident”. It’s the consequence of stupidity.

At 18 years old one November I went out with the University sailing club in the Chesapeake Bay. It was a 16' open sailboat and I was just along for the ride as it was my first time sailing with the club. The water was around 50 degrees. The wind picked up and the boat nearly capsized a couple of times so the skipper had to lift the centerboard to prevent being blown over. I knew this was a dangerous situation and told the skipper I wanted to go back to shore. He took me back and the rest of them still went out and had a fun time. I'm sure I was the strongest swimmer of the group and I don't think anyone else realized the danger they were in.

My thoughts exactly. If there is light, there must be air. Remember that guy who survived nearly 3 days inside a capsized tugboat 90 feet underwater? I suppose it is possible that the crack letting in the light was not connected to the air pocket above the water, but how did they get into a dead-end chamber if they were following the light? They could possibly have been diving with an old-school harness with no BCD, or possibly with only a backplate and no inflatable wing. Some details are missing here.

As someone that has struggled with suicidal thoughts, I'd argue that needlessly risking your life is in fact very unethical, because if you die, you cause a lot of suffering, and you remove your potential to cause good from This world. That's awful he was blamed for letting his friend drown. You know damn well he didn't choose that, there was no choice. There's no way anyone would choose to remain alone in such condition, there was no choice. So much better than one survive than none.

Men evolved to be risk takers - successful genes were from men that were brief and risky. Unfortunately, it can vary in its potency of course due to variation and such but it's sadly why most of these type of things happen. Even simply going cave diving is dangerous and risky even for the best of divers.

There is a balance of whether a risk is “worth it,” and differs for different people. And if no one dared to explore things, the world would be a much more limited place. A new cave may just be rock and water, or it might contain cave paintings, ancient pottery, fossils, rare crystal formation or who knows. Part of why humans succeeded as a species is their curiosity.

My foreman was working for a long time to get finally start a career in underwater welding. He finally got a job doing it and came back about 2 months later saying how scary it was under there. He said just working on the ships not being able to see shit with the feeling at any moment you could be crushed. The pay was good but not worth his life and went back to being my foreman in fencing haha

"Arquets" almost certainly doesn't mean "caskets"(which I assume was because of google translate) in this context, instead meaning "arches" which of course matches the formations. There is also a dance called "Els Arquets" where women dance with floral arches, for example.

This Summer, I was in Vietnam and did one of the tunnel tours, that's on land, and they have some lights in the tunnels. I lost my group and lost orientation. Only after walking around for a while I found an exit and got out at a different place than the group that already panicked for having lost me. Eventually, I found them outside. Then we went into another part of the tunnels where there was no light, pitch black. You would just inch your way forward. You basically have zero orientation while still having your feet on the ground, so knowing at least up and down and being able to breathe. No way I'd dive into a cave with no security dive line, knowing you only have a limited amount of air with you and if you lose vision, you completely lose 3D orientation. That's a scary thought.

Following your instincts, like the 3rd diver did, is super important. I believe our instincts, gut feelings, whatever you call them, are directly from God or a higher power indeed. I only wish more listened to it rather than adrenaline ruling us.🙏

I have 2 questions🙋🏻‍♀️ 1. The map usually shown of cave is in 2D and it’s a specific cross section. But in reality the 3D map is more webbed and complicated. Who selects the appropriate 2D map and how? And how to make sure divers stick to that route and not go far to the R or to the L? 2. When someone gets stuck/lost in a cave, why can’t they use some kind of device with a camera on it to find the target, like a drone but for water instead of risking more lives? I’m not a diver or interested to be one BUT I’m just curious.

Underwater drones do exist. But their main issue is reception. Once they go around a corner, any signal quickly gets lost. To work around this, some underwater drones use cables to link the data feed back to the controller. Those work best in open areas though, to not get their cables get stuck or ripped.
