For my suc's I use the commercial brand Fertilome cactus and succulent mix. I trust that it has what they will need. I detected that you were about to get a bit emotional about some that you had left out and they either got too much rain or sun. It's OK. I usually just get MAD...at myself and want to get myself in the rear for being so stupid. The thing that is good about succulents is that in most cases they are forgiving, to a degree. Just don't keep it up! Anyho', thanks for the great tips. As they say, "Experience is the best teacher." Happy growing. 😊

I have a good sized collection of vintage ceramic containers. None of them have drainage holes. The planting area in these containers is quite small so I use very small succs. I put gravel on the bottom, then a mix of planter soil, perlite and sand (although lately I've been using akadama and perlite). I top dress with either sand or red lava or akadama. I give them a very small amount of water about once a month during spring and summer. I rarely water in winter. All of these pots are on my patio in bright indirect light. I live in the high desert, so I bring them indoors during the winter. It is rare that I loose a plant in these containers.

Good morning I'm from Grand Prairie Alberta in Canada I just bought my first succulent plants the environment here is pretty harshI'm not sure of the names yet but watching your video is helping me understand and to take care of them I do have one plant that looks like a lot of babies growing out of it I haven't done anything yet.I know I'm pretty sure I have to repot them in separate them from the pot they came in. Now that I know what kind of solution or the mixture I will have to try to hunt it down if I can I would like to show you pictures of my succulent plants but this is the first time I've ever reply to any videos I have watched thank you so much

I live in Beaumont, Texas and my succulents are kept on my screened porch that is protected from the north wind!!! This winter must have been a lot colder for my succulents!! I've never had to put them away over the years, but this year the cold killed all my succulents!!! I don't have a large collection of succulents, but they have thrived over the last 10 years, even in the winter!!! But, this year I didn't think the winter would be cold enough to kill my suc's, but it killed them all. I'm going to buy some more succulents because I really love them, and I didn't realize this winter that it was much to cold for my suc's!!! I'm going to purchase a bunch of baby succulents and take them off the porch in the future, so this won't ever happen again!!!! All my cacti survived the cold, go figure!!!!!

VERY informative! Thank you. My 2 favorite tools for my mini suc's are from dollartree. Drumroll....turkey baster for applying water in small amounts and avoiding leaves ( I catch rainwater for them) and plastic infant spoons and forks (12/$1) spoon for filling in dirt in small crevaces to I don't throw dirt all over the little guy and fork is handy for moving the dirt around in the pots. Also I use an eye dropper I kept from something to add water as well because SOMETIME even a turkey baster is too large. Keep those vids a comin', you're the best!!!

Thank you so much for your videos. My problem is knowing when to water. With a pot full of plants along with top dressing, how are you to know when the soil has sufficiently dried out? Putting your finger deep into the pot to try to determine the moisture can really mess up the plants and dressing.
@SucsForYou
@SucsForYou 2 жыл бұрын
I like to use a chopstick sometimes, but you can just get familiar with what the pot feels like when it has been watered and when it's dry - it's going to feel a lot lighter.

However, the succulents I bout looks like it has regular soil. I bought a bag of succulent soil and a bottle of food for them. 😑I wish I would have watched this before planting all my cacti and succulents in the cactus soil, and there are a lot. I just noticed today some weren't drying out as fast as they should, took them all out to save them. I already have the cactus soil, perlite, and pea gravel, could I make a mix with these, and if so what would you suggest? In fact my regular soil mixed with perlite for my houseplants is lighter than this soil. These pots are small, with lots of holes and still are staying wet forever. Thanks, learning so much from your channel. Brilliant name, by the way.
@SucsForYou
@SucsForYou 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Aunt Krocky! Thank you! I would skip the pea gravel since it's not porous and will trap moisture in the dirt. Even just some top soil with a lot of perlite will hold you over but be careful about overwatering :)

Ok Andrea I’m confused because I have heard from everyone that you should water deep and literally flood the pot when watering but I saw you barely put any water on yours so can you please clear that up for me, thanks so much you’re the best! Also at 17:43 what is that plant that your hand is on with the main stem laying all it’s side and all those little babies?
@SucsForYou
@SucsForYou 4 жыл бұрын
I live in a really humid climate and if I watered everything deeply nothing would ever dry out 😂 They do get flooded on occasion and the benefit to that for many plants is to encourage deeper root growth. A lot of succulents don't have long roots though so it's really not necessary 🙏 And that plant is a crested Echeveria weirdo - not sure of the species though, sorry!

I have been looking for someone doing succulents in Texas! I'm in the Dallas area. Do you have any Texas-specific tips or a video on Texas-friendly outdoor succulents? (If you don't please make one.) In Dallas, we have drought conditions and high temps in the summer, but we also see frost and at least one ice storm in the winter. I also have the issue of not having any south-facing windows and no great afternoon shade outside.
@SucsForYou
@SucsForYou 5 жыл бұрын
We're basically neighbors according to Texas-size standards 😂 So most of my videos are going to be relevant to your location but you will need to take more precautions against freezing temps there. You can always set up some grow lights indoors! As for the lack of shade, you can use other 'tougher' plants to create shade or install a simple shade cloth where you need it :)

Love your vids! Can you make a video talking about the "flour" like dust that is on some succulents leaves, I thought it was dust and rubbed it all off only later to learn it's the plants natural sun protection! And that's after I pitted them in clay pots put clay pebbles at the bottom and used really expensive bonsai succulent mix for the soil and topped them with decorative top layer! I put so much time and money into them and then rubbed off all their sunscreen which I also learned will never come back ...I was so mad and wished I had heard about this in ALL the other video I had watched to learn how to successfully put them...I even have a grow light on them

Thanks for responding!!! It seems like my succulents are struggling. The propagated plant babies that I have are shriveling up. I live in florida so I try to keep them cool by placing them north facing to get the least amount of direct sun exposure. I also have them under an overhang. But I’m still getting crunchy looking plants. Should I be watering everyday?

So I just recently got a little tiny baby succulent plant I’m not even sure what kind it is but I’ve accidentally knocked it over a couple of times and the last one it broke off of the roots will I be able to regrow it just like normal or will it not work sense it is a baby now and wasn’t an adult plant yet

Hey again! I bought your book , but I don’t see this specific subject in it . Do I need to rinse all the nursery soil off the roots of my succulents before repotting them ? I read somewhere that leaving that nursery soil on the roots when repotting can keep the roots from getting water cuz the peat based nursery soil hardens and repels water . Makes sense. That’s what I’ve been doing, but wonder if I’m wasting time and risking the plants by rinsing the roots . Thanks so much ❤️🤗
@SucsForYou
@SucsForYou 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for buying The Succulent Manual!! I don't rinse but I do remove most of the organic material. Be sure you let the roots dry before repotting in dry dirt then keep it dry a few more days at least before watering :)

Fine sand and aquarium pebbles trap moisture and compact around the roots so I wouldn't recommend it. Better off with perlite and soil :)

I have an aloe plant in succulent soil with very little of the Alkasha white river pebbles at the bottom. I live in Maryland so now while it is the beginning of Fall and still warm I put her outside for Natural sun. I plan on getting her a grow light for the winter. I am scared I will kill her. My aloe is in a terracotta pot with a drain hole. She doesnt seem to stand up as much as I would like her to. I dont know if I just didnt add enough soil because of her leaning. Somewhere I heard to use bamboo to help aloe stand up. I have bamboo but I dont know how to use it like bamboo all the way around her or not? I had a string slightly put around her to help her stand up better before I got the bamboo. I would love to see an aloe care video from you. Thank you so much!! Any comments are welcome. Thank you kindly, Kim

So, ironically my first succulent that I was going to plant Thursday has been knocked over by my cat, and a few of the leaves were shredded. I saved four leaves and I am going to try and propagate them. There are still around four or five leaves attached to the original plant, will the plant still thrive or should I try to propagate all of the leaves? Thanks again!
