Lovely and amazing video Andrea.... so gentle and calming. Thank you for sharing this little adventure with us all!

That's so cool to see! I love how you care about nature and all of its creatures. ❤❤

With so many of them, I think you would have heard them if they were birds. Hummingbirds constantly chirp and trill at each other.
@SucsForYouКүн бұрын
I thought the same thing. Hummers have a really high pitched chit and not a peep from these. But I was right near my loud outdoor AC unit. And while replying to you I just heard the first screech owl of the year 🫶🏽

I love how you share your plants with the larvae, Andrea.. I always think there's enough to go round.. 😂 Crazy hail.. the world's going mad! Loved the vid.. very, very interesting.. 🦋Wish we got huge butterflies like that in Italy.. I remember seeing so many big beauties in Kauai and they all roosted in a large tree together 💚 The insect world fascinates me.. I love watching ants work.. 😆

The Hawaiian butterflies sound amazing! I too am a big fan of bug life. As an only child, they kept me company often ha! Just bought some rue plants for the swallowtails. Lady tried to sell me one with a wee caterpillar on it and I was like no thank you, I'm good! 🤣

Beautiful butterfly! So, do the caterpillars eat your plants? 🤔
@SucsForYouКүн бұрын
Yep! Just the leaves of their host plants - citrus and rue. Doesn't hurt the plants as they'll just grow new leaves 🙏

So exciting, Andrea.. that's definitely a hummingbird moth pupa! 👍💚
@SucsForYouКүн бұрын
Yay! I just wish I knew the type/species but sometimes nature is mysterious like that 😅🙏
@pimpozzaКүн бұрын
@@SucsForYouThe only species I have seen in my garden is Macroglossum stellatarum.. the larvae are an amazing bright green! I have found pupae under leaves and even buried under the soil in some of my pots (waiting to emerge in Springtime) and they look just like the one you found, Andrea.. I know one moth pupa can look similar to another.. but I am enchanted by these creatures and always keen to learn!
@SucsForYouКүн бұрын
@@pimpozza thanks for the name! I could have met the caterpillar in person thinking it was a tomato hornworm - they look pretty similar, and I had some big dudes on my tomatoes not long ago. I let them stay until the heat finished off the plants. And the pupa was right near where they'd been planted. But it also looks like a hornworm pupa 🤷🏽♀🙏
@pimpozzaКүн бұрын
@@SucsForYou That's interesting... I've heard people call the larvae of Macroglossum stellatarum "hornworms" 🤷🏻♀️ but it's Manduca quinquemaculata, the 5-spotted hawkmoth which loves to munch tomatoes during the larva stage.. 😆🍅 They're not native to Europe so we never see them here.. But to add further to the confusion, the 5-spotted hawk moth is also sometimes referred to as a "hummingbird moth".. 🤦🏻♀️ I guess the pupa could be a hornworm pupa as they're likely very similar.. but those little critters you filmed are definitely a type of true hummingbird moth, ie those that look and fly like a feathered version.. 🤗
@SucsForYouКүн бұрын
@@pimpozza So you can see why I'm not sure who was what 😅 And I'm only finding a few sources that say the Macroglossum eat tomatoes. I'm comfortable with the critters being moths but still unsure whose pupa that was lol!

All of them survived the hurricane? Wow amazing!! How did you prepare the dirt?
It's funny that some folks 💭 they 👀 like butts🤭.Actually to me the varieties that have a little tiny slit/hole in the middle remind me of birth as the new leaves emerge, it's quite beautiful in my humble opinion😊.Great informative video, now I won't be afraid to try ordering some of these fascinating plants.I wonder if they ever require fertilizer🤔?
@Tea_leaves_and_whiskers5 күн бұрын
Hey! I have the smallest cutting of this, like an inch from the top that had broke off from my friends cactus and I’m worried it’s not going to survive, I let it callus before I put it on a draining mix, and it’s been 2-3 weeks and I gave it the tiniest bit of water bc the “boobis” are shriveling at the bottom, what should I do? Should I refrain from watering it for longer? I have it in a indirect bright light, it’s not too hot in my plant room either 😢
@SucsForYou5 күн бұрын
Hola! So it's not going to put down roots and continue growing as a normal cactus form. It could put out some offsets from the areoles where it's cut. For now I would try to get some roots on it. Give it some heat outside and bright light - no direct sun because it could burn or struggle in the heat. I don't think it will grow fast enough to survive without natural light. Water enough to just moisten the top inch or so of potting mix. It will wick down and hopefully tease out some roots in a few weeks...

These are beautiful hummingbird moths, Andrea.. ❤ I never saw so many all at once! In my garden here in Italy I am thrilled when I see just one or two.. but they are of course more abundant in North America.. Hummingbird moths are smaller in size, at 1 to 2 inches long. Hummingbirds measure 3 to 4 inches long.. so quite a size difference.. Really enjoyed seeing this! 🥰🙋🏻♀️

Seeing so many at once is what really made me think they were hummingbirds! I've only seen one type of these moths several years ago. Hopefully they will come back this evening so I can try to get better video. I think they skip a day so the flowers have time to build up their nectar supply :)
