Sudan’s ambassador to the United Nations, Al-Harith Idriss, issued a scathing critique of the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, condemning it for supporting and arming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia amid the war in Sudan.
The war in Sudan has been ongoing for more than nine months. According to the UN, the conflict has displaced 7.3 million people and killed more than 12,000.
The UAE has previously denied “supplying weapons or ammunition to any of the warring factions in Sudan”.
However, Sudanese and western officials, diplomats, local activists and human rights lawyers believe the UAE is providing significant support to the RSF.
Cameron Hudson, a former CIA analyst and senior associate at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies Africa Program, told Middle East Eye: “I think what is coming from the UAE is very substantial. It has kept them in the fight, and it has allowed them to sustain this fight with no end in sight.”
