I'll just leave my little theory here: They were in a toxic relationship. The girl (the toxic one) finally realized her mistake and decided to let him (the caged bird) leave, although she still loves him. By acting strong and telling him she doesn't love him anymore, she's actually breaking inside since she wants him to be happier in life.
