The Sudetenland, Czech and Slovak: Sudety; Polish: Kraj Sudecki) is the historical German name for the northern, southern, and western areas of former Czechoslovakia which were inhabited primarily by Sudeten Germans. These German speakers had predominated in the border districts of Bohemia, Moravia, and Austrian Silesia from the time of the Austrian Empire.
The word "Sudetenland" did not come into existence until the early 20th century and did not come to prominence until after the First World War, when the German-dominated Austria-Hungary was dismembered and the Sudeten Germans found themselves living in the new country of Czechoslovakia. The Sudeten crisis of 1938 was provoked by the Pan-Germanist demands of Germany that the Sudetenland be annexed to Germany, which happened after the later Munich Agreement. When Czechoslovakia was reconstituted after the Second World War, the Sudeten Germans were expelled or killed and the region today is inhabited almost exclusively by Czech speakers.

Don't worry, such beautiful song can't harm any intelligent person. Just idiots and false Czech patriots may feel offended but they can't imagine in their small skulls what means to be expelled from lands of forefathers whose used to raise wonderful towns and villages from the empty wilderness. In my personal opinion The Sudetenland still cries in pain even 75 years after the War and still just few people care about its bright future. I see such misery at every step, behind every corner, mostly in Egerland where everything still lies in ruins. My grandpa, who was born in 1896 and who was loyal Habsburger monarchist till his last breath used to say throughout his life that there were neither Czechs nor Germans living in Bohemia before monarchy shattering. We were all "Böhmishers" no matter of ethnicity and it should be again. Perhaps I wouldn't talk about such things by other circumstances but five years ago I moved from Prague to former Heimatkres Wesseritz to a small village Krips where I purchased very old house which was built as the "Gemeindehaus" in 1924 and during the WWII it used to serve as the "Armee Haus des Wehrmacht" and after the War it stayed abandoned almost for 45 years. Previous owner didn't do much here so when I moved to my new house I was forced to start from scratch. During these five years which was the hardest time in my life I have learnt a lot of the Sudetenland and its former habitants as well as about its current users and I must say it was the fatal mistake to expell 3 millions people out of their nature ground. If I can put one example of above all: In 1936 Krips was very beautiful village with 200 people, with its own town hall, school, grocery store, baker, butcher, blacksmith, brick factory, sand pit, two inns, police station, fire station and church. There were 30 big estates were rich farmers families used to live from the middle ages and just one poor house where a shoe maker used to live. All those farming families where strictly apolitical and in the last Czechoslovak election there were all voting for German Social Democrats. Only the poor shoemaker was Nazi used to vote for Heinlein's SDP. After the Anschluss of Sudets into the Third Reich all those families were brutally forced to accept the Reich's citizenship and shoemaker became a Gauleiter of Krips. Many sons of those people have fallen on Eastern front and after the War they all were marked as Nazis and put into the collecting camp. Every house was robbed and after the communist coup twenty houses were completed shattered to the ground. In nowadays there are just ten houses and 16 stable habitants. Church and graveyard lie in ruins and there is nothing except this. Even after 75 years Czechs didn't get these lands as their ancestral ground, they just live here no matter what will left after them here. And so I decided to turn the former Gemaindhaus with its large garden into the international center for children and young unknown artists all around the world to teach them respect to each other's culture and habits. As the first step I built a holy cross and chapel of Miraculous Holy Mother in thr garden here with a plea for peace and redemption between Germans and Czechs. If I will find appropriate support to enhance this shattered place, more such ideas will find their place here as I feel it with all my heart that we are still in big debt to Sudetenland and their true people.

It certainly should not offend any Czech, since the song isn't offensive towards us. My great-grandmother , who lived in Sternberg (A town who used to have about 90% German majority) used to have a German best friend, they stayed in contact even after the war when they moved to Michelstadt , after the Velvet revolution they phoned each other every week and the old lady used to come to Czechia every few years. Lots of love from the Czech republic and thanks for the beautiful song. I hope bright future awaits our relations. 🇨🇿🤝🇩🇪

Coming from a Czech girl with some german ancestry, definitely not offended! In the end, czechs and germans were living here side by side for a long time (almost 1000 years!) and it is a vital part of our history. I mean, we are still highly influenced by it and Germans left a huuge mark in our culture (they literally partly formed it as well, I mean, when you compare our cultures, there are really no big differences) and you see that just by looking at czech language, so many germanisms! (I mean you could say kaput, durch, ende, etc. Etc. In front of a czech person who has never learned German and he would understand) Czech lands were literally part of Germania, after that Ostsiedlung, etc. etc, which started in the 10th century I think. A lot of Germans came here, mostly to help - Sudetendeutsche were people who knew how to exist and work in the mountains - native Czechs did not, they lived mostly by the rivers in lowlands. Germans literally cultivated the whole mountain area and thanks to them, people are now living there. And Germans were not only in now so called Sudetenland, they were in Prague, just almost everywhere! In the middle ages, they were literally a majority in big cities, but a lot of them later started to identify as Czechs. My grandgrandgrand...father was one of them, he came here from Germany in 16 century, and he brought confectionery? here with several other Germans. And I mean, Germans brought here a lot of crafts that we did not know before. So they literally were the key part of the evolution of Czech lands. I honestly do not even understand how anyone can say that Russians are our brothers. When we literally shared 1000 years of history with Germans and the only common thing we have with Russians is slavic language (but with a lot of Germanisms) I am really interested in the German-Czech topic, and it is honestly really sad that they do not tell us most of these things in school which I dont understand, cause it was such a vital part of our history. And that some people still despise Germans is sad when, ironically, a lot of them themselves have German ancestry. All those things that happened in the 20th century between our nations really just saddens me, that 1000 years of together history was ruined in a few years. I know that ww2 left a huge wound in hearts of both of our nations, but, luckilly, I think I can optimistically say that it is really gradually getting better and better as time flies. I mean, how Germans met with Czechs on the borders when coronavirus close them and people were missing each other and just wanted to meet, etc. Even seeing a Kreuz der Versöhnung on one of the Sudetenland cemeteries made me really happy. So, definitely not offensive, but helpful, and really nice for the people with ancestry in Sudetenland. The fact that a lot of innocent Sudetendeutsche were literally dragged out of their homes and in a lot of times murdered needs to be acknowledged. Those were bad times, really bad. And we both, Czechs and Germans (talking about those normal ones, not nazis, you get me) became victims of those horrible times. That literally dragged us apart. But I think I can optimistically say that we are finding a way back to each other, which makes me really happy. So thank you Herr Ludwig, really. You are not offending anyone, only helping all of us to heal. Normalising the fact that expelled Germans really do deserve to love their former homeland. Good evening everyone! (And sorry for the long paragraph) 😂

Although many Gottscheer were relocated to Germany during the war, those who fled later either remained in Austria or resettled in New York. Now it's just a sad memory.

I am Czech person and I sometimes regret it ended like that. Just yesterday I was in Saaz (Žatec) and admired sudeten german architecture of city centre (many buildings were destroyed by Roma people but now it is mostly repaired). There are still some german signs on the walls of lot of old buldings. I think it would be way better not only for Sudetenland region but for the whole country if most of the Germans could stayed after WW2. Now after more than 70 years most of the former regions of Sudetenland are still the worst in the meaning of poverty, criminality, relationship, lack of traditions and other factors. Uprooting is still evident.

@@dr.ludwig Yes, I agree. Unfortunately these people are almost gone and their descendants are normal Germans. But Sudeten Germans were little bit different as well as Austrians are different from Germans. I'd like to do some time traveling and talk to them and get to know them. He later married my grandma who is Czech, but later they got a divorce and my grandpa fled to Germany from communist Czechoslovakia to be with his family who was already here. I recently cleared out my grand uncles apartment because he moved to a better home, and he was also subscribed to a monthly newspaper for the Sudeten Germans, there were some really nice things in there.

The camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald deserve as much recognition as the massacres in Postoloprty (Postelberg) and Brno (Brunn) do. I find it funny that people like you call anyone who defends the Germans for whatever reason a Nazi. That's the thing. You try to use Nazi atrocities as a cloak to justify your own crimes. I have the same story in my family but it was my grandfather's family that had to flee/ dislocate. What I think about a lot actually was, when they were put in a train, heading to the German border and finally into Germany, they prayed to head south/ west and for the train to bring them into US occupied territory- they could have easily being driven up north/ east into the Russian occupied regions and that was their worst nightmare. They were lucky ending up in Suebia/ Bavaria. A few family members weren't that lucky and ended up in the east though.

Die Mutter meines besten Schulkumpels wurde am 31. Dezember 1919 in Brünn/Brno geboren. Weltkrieg sehr viel leiden.

This was a wonderful upload Dr. Ludwig- thanks. My Oma was Sudetendeutsch and my Grandfather Czech- their towns just 1km apart- so a very similar story to many here. Her people had lived in the same town for something like 400 years. Sadly, they were deported, with my Oma's family, but ultimately they ended up in West Germany, Austria, and Canada and all's well. All the history is interesting, if sad for so many people, but after so much time it should remain history- recognized and understood, but not something to still be in conflict about. It's far better to learn from history and not repeat it. And it's very nice to read so many reasonable and civil comments here- it gives one hope that we are learning ;)

My grandmother, who was a Volhynian Czech from Ukraine, told me about her family when they were resettled into the Czechlands and into a soon-to-be vacated German home. The German family was really kind to them and even made them food. She remembers how they couldn't stop crying since they and all other German families were being evicted from their family homes, which were passed down from generations. There is even a plaque of when the home was last renovated, sometime in the 1800s. So, likely it is hundreds of years older. It is a sad time in history and I feel bad for all of the families that suffered emotionally. I hope that German family and their descendants are living a happy and healthy life.

What was it that "we did" to the Czechs? The Kingdom of Bohemia was part of the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation" from 1000 to 1806 and from 1815 until 1866 it was part of the "German Confederation". And until 1918 it was bound together with "German-Austria". During all these centuries Bohemia developed well.

Finally I understand this song about my ancestors :D Also nice backround map. I must say some things, dont take it bad. Sudetenland is mainstream title for these regions as whole but original Sudetenland is(was) only northeast region close to Poland borders. Our region was indetified itself Deutche-Bohmen by political statement in 1919,culturaly our region was called Arzgebirg, also there is Riesengebirg,Ostsudeten and more. In every region were some differencies in culture, especially in folk costumes, handcrafts and language. Most of regions (provinces) have some own anthems. But I know unity is important for Germans :-) Flag in the video is made by Sudetendeutsche Landsmanschaft, organizations represent German culture and people and negotiate with Czech goverment. Now this group is joke just for money laundering. Just saying.

The Sudetenland was taken away from Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire and given to Czechoslovakia. The region contained Czechs, Germans, Slovaks, Hungarians, Poles and Ruthenians." Die Vorstellung, selbst der Begriff Sudetenland entstand erst nach dem 1.Weltkrieg. Vorher war Boehmen oder Maehren die Heimat aller dort Lebenden, Tschechen und Deutschen. Der Hypernationalismus beider Seiten hat alles zerschlagen. Uebrigens hatten die Deutschboehmen keinen eigenen Sudetendialekt, sondern sprachen schlesisch, saechsisch, bayrisch.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the lack of a Czech nationalist backlash here in the comments section. EDIT: Well, they arrived...

A thing like "Czech nationalist" is quite rare these days. But most of us can admit expulsion of German population from Sudetenland was a terrible thing to do. Although Germans did us terrible crimes that can not be forgotten, it still doesn't justify it...

@@czechoslovakpatriot4773 What I'm talking about are the ones on other channels that act proud of these atrocities, claiming that these "traitors" deserved to be driven out for undermining the state. And they also claim that the Germans were originally settlers, even though settlement had happened everywhere in Europe. Also, they downplay the economic problems in the borderlands.

@@tylerbozinovski4624 The people who claim it was right, aren't true patriots. It's like saying claiming that extermination of Slavs by the Nazis was right. Sudetenland is Czech, but the German people belonged here and it was their homeland just as ours.

@@ghostcz5400 Já to nepopírám.
