This was very fun, an interesting concept in coming up with a good number of given digits for those of us who "got it" quickly, and for others, another dimension of the puzzle to be solved. I enjoyed solving it, and I enjoyed your piano-playing, Mark. I am reminded of a line from Pride and Prejudice, where Lady Catherine said, speaking of playing the piano, "I would have been a great proficient if I had ever learnt." There you go! Thanks for this video (and don't let the complainers get you down - this was well-worth the position in the CtC catalogue).

Mark, permit me to speak plainly. As a Bible teacher and unwavering Christian, I can think of no moment where either you or Simon have given me reason to imagine that you held any negative opinion whatsoever of Christianity. Being thorough, I can think of no moment where either of you have given me reason to presume that you are believers. The one thing I can be certain of, is that you are both eminently decent gentlemen, humble and kind in your behavior on display. It is exceptionally wise, given the mode of your channel, that you provide no cause for anyone to be turned away from what you are doing. Carry on my friend.

I finished in 33:35 minutes. This was such a creative idea for a sudoku. It took me nearly 14 minutes to convert the notes, but it was so satisfying to play it in the player. It was just as satisfying to place the notes along the pink line. If there is one thing in the world that I do not understand and probably never will, it is music theory. I have tried many times, but it doesn't make sense. Even trying to just read the notes was a real challenge. It sucks, because I've always wanted to be able to play the piano, but everything comes out either too simplistic or discordant. Oh well, at least I am decent at sudokus. Great Puzzle!

Anybody who believes that lyric is in anyway anti-religion doesn't understand the background to the song. The line comes from an old Southern (USA) expression that means "I'm at the end of my Rope" (in the UK we would say "I'm at the end of my Tether") and when you know that the song makes a lot more sense. As an aside, even if it did refer to somebody feeling their faith slipping away I don't see how anybody could take offence, maybe they could have some compassion for the person & try to offer support but to take offense feels very "Un-Religious" to me.

For all of you complaining about the musical clue: Did you never play with a musical toy as a child? Bought one for your own child? Your grandchild? They generally have 8 notes and you can play a surprising number of tunes with it. Old McDonald, Twinkle Twinkle, Jingle Bells and, yes, Joy to the World, to name a few. And since that toy probably popped up at Christmas, Joy is the first one you might figure out. You don't need to know any more theory than you should have learned in elementary school (Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do, anyone?) to figure out the first 8 notes are sequential. Or at least unique or the puzzle would be broken. Otherwise, just skip the puzzle. There's no way you've solved everyone of them on this channel.

Although I hear the song in 2/4, not 4/4, I could tell which 14 notes you meant, but I had a lot of trouble trouble parsing the instructions in a way that makes sense, with or without the sheet music. The first few notes are a run down the major scale, so the 1 was repeated the first the way I kept trying to understand it, and doesn't fit in the sudoku either way along that line. Did you mean that the high C is the 8, and the low C is the 1? Can that be specified somewhere so that people don't make the mistake that I did?

The notation of the melody is written in the instructions in the video description and in the video, but not in the sudokupad instructions. @@461weavile No, it starts on the root, but an octave up, which in the rules to this sudoku mean it's the number 8, but according to the rules of music theory make it a number 1. It doesn't start on the fifth, at least not according to any musical rules that I ever heard. Perhaps the problem is that the setter is classically trained, whereas I'm slightly more informed by jazz theory, where you do sometimes have 9th chords, and 11th and even 13th chords, but never 8th chords, because there is no 8. The '8' is the root, which is a number 1, and then the next note is the ninth. So the rules of this sudoku are consistent within themself, but counterintuitive to many rules of music.
@461weavile
@461weavile 17 күн бұрын
@@rungus24 The second lyric most definitely does not start on the root, regardless of which octave you're looking at. Ignore the music theory names. The root in the first octave is the first digit as noted in the rules. The second is the digit 2. The third is the digit 3. As the rules note, the second in the following octave is the digit 9. The root in the following octave therefore is the digit 8. If you look at the graphic included, you get exactly those digits displayed on the keyboard image. Regardless, a person would only consider the root in all octaves to be the digit 1 if they didn't read the rules of the puzzle; it's clear from the rules that the pitches are assigned the nine digits, even if it's unclear from the rules which notes of the melody are assigned to which digit.

@@461weavile It's as if we're agreeing with each other, but you're just making it incredibly more confusing than it needs to be. They left needless ambiguity in the instructions.

I object to this puzzle on the basis that the setter got the music wrong. I tried solving it without even knowing there was a special website for the music piece, looked up the score for "Joy to the World," and found that there was no way to make the first 4 bars work on the line. I came back to the video, found out about the website, and looked there. The notes on the website are wrong, and he has it in the wrong time signature. I checked multiple sources and downloaded MIDI files, and the musical aspect of the puzzle is plain wrong. The first 14 notes of "Joy to the World" (omitting sharps) are D C B A G F E D D G G C C D, and it was like that in every score I looked at. It's a clever idea but with an incorrect basis, and as someone who does know music and tried to solve it using sheet music, I was extremely disappointed.

You saw a version of the song that is in D-major. It can be played and sung in any key at all, though, including C-major, which is what the web page refers to. If you take that C = 1, then you can map the digits 1 to 8 to the notes of a major scale, in this case the C-major scale, and you will see that it matches the sequence that the constructor gives. So, you forgot to consider that any piece of music can be transposed to any key. There was nothing incorrect about the webpage or the way the constructor of the puzzle rendered the digits into musical notes.

@@emilywilliams3237 I wouldn‘t call it incorrect, but I think it‘s ambiguous. It took the magic square in box 6 for me to realise that it couldn‘t be the version in D major I found at first. I came to the correct solution in the end, but I would have preferred not to have to try two different versions of the song in different keys to get there.

@@screwaccountnames I guess that the constructor assumed that being able to represent the correct notes on just the white keys of a keyboard was going to be helpful to people who don't read music notation, or don't read it fluently. And Mark did say at the beginning of the video that there was a webpage giving information about the musical part of it, and he gave the link and also used that webpage in his own solve. I think that many people jump right into the puzzle without watching any of the video or reading the description field at all, so maybe folks who do that without making use of the resource of the video itself might find themselves a bit afield.

There's no "correct key" for a music standard. You object to the puzzle, but I object to your disregarding of the accidentals contrary to the instructions of the puzzle. The musical aspect of the puzzle is not "plain wrong," you're simply looking for a reason to complain and to be disappointed. It's a clever idea and it's plainly obvious. There's no possible way to come up with anything where, as the instructions state, "the digits 1-9 are mapped to the white keys" unless you do the intended answer. Anything else will get you a non-digit in a puzzle that requires the digits 1-9.

Goodness gracious with these complainers. If you didn't like this one sudoku that *gasp* requires you to incorporate the most basic of music knowledge, then try one of the literally thousands of others on this channel. Yes, it's outside of what they normally do, which is pure 100% deductive reasoning, but they've done puzzles before where you had to do a lateral thinking puzzle in order to start the actual sudoku puzzle first, although it's been a while. I personally like the challenge of having to figure something else out once in a while. True, this is gonna be tougher for those that are hard of hearing, but for everyone else, y'all are way too fixed mindset. If you're not a musical person and not willing to take the roughly 2 minutes it would take to look up which notes are which on a musical staff, or just listen to the music and match the notes with a keyboard using the link that came with the puzzle, then fine, go ahead and skip this one. But in the time it took you to complain, you could have instead adopted a growth mindset, figured it out, actually learned something new about music, and solved a wonderful puzzle to boot.

There have been plenty of puzzles featured on this channel where I, not being familiar with some sorts of pencil puzzles, for example, had to figure out a lot of things that might have been basic to someone else from reasoning through the rules and thinking about what everything had to mean. The page that was linked from the description field gave plenty of information to help even the least musical person on earth treat it like a puzzle to be solved and arrive at a solution that would enable the sudoku puzzle to be solved. This seems entirely fair to me.

_"The direction [of the 14-digit sequence] must be determined"_ 🤣 Really? What a challenge❗ This is just a puzzle with *14* given digits, a non-innovative ruleset and a few barely enjoyable logic steps at the end (e.g., a couple of naked singles that rule *5* out of the circle in box 3). The translation process (from notes to digits) does not require logic and I skipped it by watching Mark's solve @11:48. Even if it were a lovely prelude by Bach, I would not be interested in translating it to digits...

@@jeffreybrookner9251 I truly don't think that a tone deaf person would have been unable to figure out the mapping of numbers to notes. There was a lot of information given on that page. And as Mark said at the beginning, they do 14 sudoku puzzles a week (or sometimes 13 if Simon does a non-sudoku puzzle occasionally). There is plenty of content for everyone to have lots to solve and enjoy. Musical notation is just another puzzle to be solved, and not every puzzle is to everyone's taste. Not sharing this puzzle would have deprived many folks of an enjoyable experience, just because a few folks didn't take music lessons or consider themselves tone-deaf.

I know there's a very good chance that I'm in the minority, but I have to thumbs-down this video for the thoughtless decision to feature this horrible puzzle. If you're going to feature a puzzle like this, then post the sequence which must be followed; don't make people guess it. 1) You're relying on an external page being accessible to everyone, now and in the future; 2) people without good pitch recognition may not be able to match the tones; and 3) most importantly, people who are deaf or hard of hearing won't be able to determine the sequence.
@emilywilliams3237
@emilywilliams3237 20 күн бұрын
I do agree that the externally-linked page may not be available forever, but I imagine that it will be available for the duration of interest in the average sudoku puzzle. As for needing good pitch recognition to solve the musical note mapping part of the puzzle, I don't think so - there were many other clues given that enable even someone who can't hear music at all able to deduce how the mapping must work. And as Mark said toward the beginning of the video, they put puzzles on this channel which are good puzzles, and some of them are not to everyone's taste, and some are hard to solve on various devices, or if one is colorblind, or whatever. But the majority of people, or even a significant minority of people, can enjoy a puzzle that is not easy or to everyone's taste.

How hard, really, is it to get the sequence by watching the video up to the point where Mark figures it out? Not much harder than reading it from the description. I mean, for that matter you could argue that the sudokupad links are not guaranteed to remain accessible forever.

@@emilywilliams3237 "but I imagine that it will be available for the duration of interest in the average sudoku puzzle" - People find these videos years after they were posted. I still go back and replay puzzles from when this channel first began, long before Sven created this new app. it's not as if these puzzles will be up for a few months and then disappear. "there were many other clues given that enable even someone who can't hear music at all able to deduce how the mapping must work" - You are incorrect. There was no information on that page which would suggest how to determine the sequence unless you already know how to read sheet music or can hear and match the tones provided. "can enjoy a puzzle that is not easy or to everyone's taste" - This isn't an issue of not being to someone's taste. This is an issue of explicitly and intentionally excluding a sizable segment of the population.

@@afanofosc "How hard, really, is it to get the sequence by watching the video up to the point where Mark figures it out?" - Believe it or not, a lot of people (I would guess most people) want to solve the puzzle on their own, without watching Mark or Simon solve it (or any part of it) first. That's part of the enjoyment of solving puzzles for many people -- doing it on your own. EDIT: "I mean, for that matter you could argue that the sudokupad links are not guaranteed to remain accessible forever" - You're right, the Sudokupad links are not guaranteed to remain accessible forever, but they don't need to. You can easily create your own Sudoku grid on a piece of paper. Comparing the disappearance of Sudokupad to the disappearance of an external page required for the rules is comparing apples to chainsaws.
