Misato was a real character. She wasn't just an anime character that was predictable and only played a role for the main character. She had insane depth to her character and that fact that it's so raw and real is crazy. Like Misato feels like a real human if you ask me

the part where he talks about how misato's father cared more for his work than for his family but deep down he still loved them (e.g: when he saved misato seconds before the second impact) reminds me of how she turned out to be like him in the rebuild movies. when ryoji was born, she felt like she couldn't be the best mother for him. so she distanced herself from him and focused more on her work, but even far apart, she still looked out for him, and wishing him the best. great video.

Misato is in no way a, or the, Best Lady. She really isn't even a very good person (good, but only just so), though she does attempt to be, so she's appreciable as a character. On the positives: She takes Shinji in to give an obviously lonely child some stability in life, does try to look after him and wants to help him open up with people, is confident and direct when she needs to be (most of the time), and has something akin to a moral backbone. The negatives: She asserts her idea of how Shinji should behave on him, she's about as toxicaly manipulative of Shinji as his dad is, she has very little control over her thoughts when emotional, she projects very much that she doesn't about herself onto Shinji and has taken it out on him by berating him over how he should fix his problems while ignoring how much difference there is between the two, and is perfectly fine with following obviously stupid or immoral orders in spite of her moral backbone. Her willful and unintentional ineptitude often brought about by her own lack of understanding herself and others simply negate the concept of being a Lady, a woman of refinement, elegance, empathy, intelligence, and a master of behavior in social situations. She's not mature enough of a person for the term.

Thank you so much for making this! I've been waiting for a good Misato analysis for years. She's my favorite character from Eva, and has been since I first watched it. Few characters I've encountered in fiction convey concepts and themes like the ones she does, let alone convey them /well/. Something I've always loved about her is how multifaceted she is, without feeling unpredictable. She has a number of "faces"; sides to her personality, yes, but all those faces come together cohesively to create a realistic character, rather than feeling disjointed or inconsistent. That's an impressive feat. I wish more people respected her and the nuances of her character. There's definitely a lot to her if people are willing to look.
