Award winning Blues Artist Sue Foley was in town earlier this week for a private show. She had a little downtime, so she stopped in to check out a few guitars. While she was here, Sue took a moment to sit down and play some, and talk with us about her diverse playing style. You can find out more about her at: suefoley.com

Met Sue in Edmonton, 1987, while she was in her late teens…said she preferred Texas, to Chicago blues. The proof is in her style. Too cool seeing her play a vintage Gate/Johnny Winter-like Firebird, For my money, the leading Canadian electric blues guitarist at this time! ❤ 🇨🇦

The Great Jerry Reed primarily Used Nylon /gut guitars. Those early P-90 ES 175’s are real special. Gatemouth’ Brown’ was a pioneer in ways most don’t realize . SUE is real special carrying on the traditional Blues. Awesome Gal❤️

When I picked up the guitar I got some great advice. Was suggested to go to a pawn shop and get a classical. Easier on the fingers. 48 years of playing ago.

You know, Sue. When this video started. I was thinking… She left the price tag on her guitar. Did she leave any on her clothing? Then I found out you are at this place in Nashville. Oh? That's why the price tags were still on. I was just thinking, Sue is a bit strange? But no! You sure have the manicure for that, Flamenco Guitar work. That sounds great! Yes you sure do play guitar very nicely. I would have been pleased, to record you. I make recordings every bit as lovely as your playing. Maybe better? Because here's the trick. I don't see or hear. On your recordings. With that I have not delved deep. Into your repertoire. But I digress. Beautiful acoustic, strummed instruments. Really should not be recorded with, Condenser Microphone, thingies. They get too much pluck. Instead? Correct Term, Velocity Microphone a.k.a., Ribbon Microphone. That's what you want. On strummed acoustic guitar. They take, top-end, EQ. Very well. And you will be Transformed! To the next Segovia Level. I mean what do you think he made most of his recordings on? Way back when. They were using a lot of ribbon microphones. That's partly of what made him sound, so great. Because condenser microphones don't sound like that. Dynamic microphones, don't sound like that. My mentor taught me this. 53 years ago when I was 15. And it was a real epiphany. What these things represent. What they do. What they sound like. How they can be used. Their benefits. The lush big full gorgeous sweetness of them. They are crazy. Many versions by many manufacturers at many price points. Are available. From super affordable. To, esoteric expensive. And everything in between. From both, Merica, Germany, England, Denmark, Japan and China. All are great! But just like stringed instruments. Some are short, geometry ribbons. Some are long, geometry ribbons. Some are single ribbons. Others are dual ribbons. Some are passive output. Others are active phantom powered, output. And I largely prefer the, Passive Ribbon Microphones. When I record stringed instruments.. They are warmer. Less edgy. Sometimes people like edgy. Your choice. The phantom powered ones sound more like, smooth condenser microphones. And I don't necessarily want, condenser like sound on, strummed or bowed, stringed instruments. It depends on what you're going for. Pop stuff? Edgy and aggressive. Easy listening? Warm lush sweet sounding ribbons. Where I can be both Passive and Active. They are also great on, Electric Cabinets. And frequently coupled with a secondary SM-57 to a separate track/channel. Because ribbon microphones are neither in phase nor out of phase. With both, condenser and dynamic microphones. Because of how they work. They are 90° and 270° off from those. Never 180°. So they combine nicely without horrible cancellation sound. And you can select phase to your taste. One way will be thinner sounding and brighter. The other way will be bigger and fatter, richer and fuller, sounding. I've used both. But I'm not a guitarist. Just an, real Engineer. As I also teach the teachers. That teach recording at University. As I'm not exactly a teacher type. I'm a hard-nosed engineer.. I get it right. I had to. Because for 20 years I worked for NBC-TV in Washington DC. And I had to be one of the best in the world. When you work for a Major US Network. Yup. You Tickle Guitars, just right. And you look pretty good also. RemyRAD
