With their 9th studio album, Autofiction, out this week we thought it would be a good time to rank the catalog of the original Britpop band, Suede.
****
Suede (also known in the US as The London Suede) are an English rock band formed in London in 1989. The band is composed of singer Brett Anderson, guitarist Richard Oakes, bass player Mat Osman, drummer Simon Gilbert and keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Neil Codling.
In 1992, Suede were dubbed "The Best New Band in Britain" by Melody Maker, and attracted much attention from the British music press. The following year their debut album Suede went to the top of the UK Albums Chart, becoming the fastest-selling debut album in almost ten years. It won the Mercury Music Prize and helped foster 'Britpop' as a musical movement, though the band distanced themselves from the term. The recording sessions for their second album, Dog Man Star, were fraught with difficulty and ended with original guitarist Bernard Butler departing after confrontations with the other members. The album was completed without Butler, and the band toured the record with replacement Richard Oakes. Although a commercial disappointment at the time, the album was met with a generally enthusiastic reception on release and has over time been lauded as one of rock music's great albums. In 1994, Suede would become a component of the Britpop "big four", along with Oasis, Blur and Pulp.
In 1996, following the recruitment of keyboard player Neil Codling, Suede went on to greater commercial success with Coming Up. The album reached number one in the UK, producing five top ten singles and becoming Suede's biggest-selling album worldwide. Despite problems within the band, Suede's fourth album, Head Music (1999), was a British chart-topper. The album was promoted heavily with the band receiving considerable press coverage on its release, however the response from fans and critics was less enthusiastic than for previous records. Codling left the band in 2001, citing chronic fatigue syndrome and was replaced by Alex Lee. The band's fifth album, A New Morning (2002), the first following the collapse of Nude Records, was a commercial disappointment, and the band disbanded the following year. After much speculation Suede reformed in 2010 for a series of concerts. Three years on from their reunion gigs, Suede released their sixth album, Bloodsports. It was well received by critics and returned the band to the top ten in the UK. Their seventh album, Night Thoughts, followed in 2016 and became an even bigger critical and commercial success than its predecessor. Their eighth studio album, The Blue Hour, was released in September 2018. It became the group's first top five record since Head Music. Their ninth and most recent studio album, Autofiction was released in September 2022.
****

Absolutely, it’s a superb collection, right up there alongside obvious picks by the likes of Oasis (The Masterplan being that ultimate album that never was), The Beatles, The Smiths, Manic Street Preachers and (referring to Insecticide) Nirvana - I’d also throw in Elbow and Doves - terrific amount of quality b-sides between all these bands. Then you get compilations by The Stone Roses. Awesome stuff Shame digital music has killed this thing!

🤠 Yep. It's a crucial collection for suede fans. "He's Dead"...I mean...dang. I think it's in the Britpop bio called The Last Party, where it is mentioned that the extended exploration of He's Dead was very much Bernard's preference of where suede should go, musically. One of their finest moments, I reckon.

I’m a British guy in my 50s so I experienced all these albums at the time they came out and the huge buzz around the music scene at that time. I’m always interested in hearing your take when you come to a band with completely fresh ears, uninfluenced by what was said about them in the past. You always give everything a good listen and make some interesting points. You’re not judging them through some hazy rose-tinted memory from following them in the 90s, so you’re just assessing the music from a pretty neutral stand point. It’s also an indicator of whether the music stands the test of time, if it connects with younger listeners.

They were the most important English band of their time and to truly get it you had to be witnessing them as it happened. Forget a new morning guy in the top right! What’s he on?! Well I've been looking forward to this one guys and it didn't disappoint - a great video! Jason's view on A New Morning and Suede in general was certainly 'interesting' but its these diverging views which make these rundowns so fun to watch 😄 I haven't listened to Autofiction yet so my ranking of the remaining eight would be as follows: 8) Bloodsports 3* 7) A New Morning 3.5* 6) The Blue Hour 3.5* 5) Head Music 3.5* 4) Suede 4* 3) Coming Up 4* 2) Night Thoughts 4.5* 1) Dog Man Star 5* Good to see a lot of shout outs for the excellent Sci Fi Lullabies (Oasis and Suede single handedly reinvented the importance of the b-side in the 1990s) but haven't see any other reference to Here Comes the Tears by the Tears, the fantastic Anderson/Butler reunion from 2005. Joe would especially love this I think - the great lost Suede album in many respects!!

Brett and Bernard didn't like the - and they obviously knew it would happen - idea that it would be labelled a sequel to Dog Man Star. They coulda EASILY just made a Suede record but came up with a new name just to set it apart, sacrificing commercial appeal to do so. There are parts of Bernard's solo debut that show, I think, what Dog Man Star's follow up woulda been like with him.

One of my favourite TLM discographies was the recent Prefab Sprout. They, along with two other bands, are part of a trio of bands that I always refer to as my "guilty pleasure" Why I use the term, fuck knows, as I feel no guilt in the pleasure of listening to them, but I guess it's more of an unmentioned love for three bands that I have followed, collected, and seen live since day one. The second of the aforementioned trio, are Suede and here we are, a few months after the Sprouts discography with a full worst to best of all things Anderson and co. Keep this up Jason, Joe and Kramer and it can only be a matter of time before you give me the hat trick and include The Charlatans. My favourite of the three. But for now I thank you for Suede and it's only right that I join in and give you my own list. 9. Head Music ⭐⭐ 8. The Blue Hour ⭐⭐⭐ 7. Night Thoughts ⭐⭐⭐ 6. Bloodsports ⭐⭐⭐ 5. A New Morning ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4. Autofiction ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 3. Suede ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2. Dog Man Star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1. Coming Up ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Saw them live twice, on their first tour and on the Bloodsports tour. I was stunned how brilliant and entertaining they still were in 2013. Anderson had the crowd wrapped around his little finger, delivering a powerful and haunted vocal and stage performance, oozing with sweat and emotions, and the band played great with a verystrong guitar by Richard Oakes. My favourite Suede record is Sci-Fi Lullabies, but, as this is only a very strong compilation, here's my rating of the regular discography: 1) Suede 2) Dog Man Star 3) Bloodsports 4) Coming Up 5) Head Music 6) A New Morning 7) The Blue Hour 8) Night Thoughts. Maybe a have to revisit 7 and 8 to appreciate them more, I just found them a little disappointing and low after Bloodsports, which I really really liked. Now I'm gonna give the new one a spin, hope it's as good as you say.

I applaud you for making an effort and creating a video that hopefully introduces more people to Suede's catalogue; with that said, I agree with the other comments, in order to truly understand the range of their career spanning songwriting, the first disc of Sci Fi Lullabies and full (8 minute) version of Stay Together are as essential as She Loves You, Strawberry Fields Forever and All You Need is Love to The Beatles catalogue (all non studio album tracks). I would also recommend listening to any recordings released in pre-streaming era on lossless sources (or at least compare), oftentimes heavily orchestrated/layered production suffers when played even with 320 ogg or mp3 bitrate. It may sound like a snob audiophile opinion but just remember the historical context and give it a proper listen. I'm confident that you'll be compelled to make another video on how Suede's Sci Fi Lullabies outranks even such known staples as "gasp" Radiohead's OK Computer (released the same year), you wouldn't be the first to make the discovery. Enjoy!

@@TastesLikeMusic Joe - agreed in principal regarding OK Computer, it's just what some of your fellow music critics said at the time :) I just couldn't resist. You can easily find Sci Fi Lullabies on Amazon in a CD format, though Stay Together EP might be a bit harder to find, it's not impossible - I got both as regular US releases. Stay Together EP actually says "The London Suede". I believe some of the deluxe remastered albums have all of their B sides too, maybe that's why they didn't re-release Sci Fi Lullabies again. Jason - early Suede is not for everyone; however, you're not alone with liking A New Morning, try to find Simon, Oceans and Attitude (non album tracks from the same period). And all 4 of Brett's solo albums are in the very close vein, he got all acoustic stuff out of his system before getting back together with Butler on The Tears and rebooting Suede later.

A band that started with such an amazing burst of inspiration. The three singles that predated the debut; The Drowners, Metal Mickey & Animal Nitrate had me hooked from the outset. 1. Dog Man Star Overblown, epic, bombastic. Whoever said this in the video was spot-on. A grandiose, emotionally charged at times bonkers album. I love it. 2. Sci-fi Lullabies Wouldn't make the cut for being a compilation. But all non-album tracks. Jam-packed with great tunes and out-there lyrics. These songs show just how much great material they had to pass some of these off as b-sides to singles. Pulls together the remainder of the Bernard Butler tracks. 3. Suede The debut. Still sounds exciting today. I was lucky enough to see Suede at the Brixton Academy in May of '93. The show ended up as the Love & Poison video release. And almost every song from the debut featured. 4. Coming Up Not quite as powerful as Stranded after Eno left, but Suede without Butler wanted to prove they could carry on. And for this one album, they manage to make it work. From there it is a series of ever-diminishing returns. Or as Jason described his #1; "Mature, professional, refined" Surely the death knell for any band.

Anderson has recently said (I'm paraphrasing), "Autofiction is our punk record, which to clarify, doesn't mean it's a punk record. Technically, it's more post-punk." They were aiming to capture back to basics energy, as opposed to the approach of Night Thoughts and the Blue Hour. And I think Brett said Richard was encouraged to incorporate some of his musical influences in the sound, which include some classic post-punk bands.

He also, after writing the two volumes of memoirs, said he felt less need to make moody music as he excorcised a lot of baggage with them. A track like She Still Leads Me On would have been WAY darker if 90s or even 2010s Brett wrote it.

I love Suede. This should be interesting. I think they’re really consistent quality wise. I’d love for Jason to choose the Bee Gees sometime in the future, he’s gotta prove to Joe and Kram that they’re more than just their disco years. Their 60’s baroque material is incredible.

Here is my ranking of Suede 's discography : 1. Dog Man Star. 9.25. Their most ambitious and greatest achievement. Theatrical, ultra-romantic, dark, glammy. Fantasticly sequenced, with tracks perfectly working as opening and closing tracks, killer set of singles at the front and very interesting work in the second half. Love the arrangements and the overall sound. 2.Self-titled. 8.75. Sexy, melancholic, angsty, passionate. The influence of Bowie and The Smiths is more obvious in their debut than in the following records, but they had enough personality to avoid sounding derivative, mainly because of Brett Anderson's vocals. A bunch of great songs, but I never liked that much their slower tracks in this record, something that they will soon overcome. 3.Coming Up. 8.25. Their pop record. Six strong, catchy singles. The impact is more superficial but definitely very enjoyable. 4.The Blue Hour. 8.25. This album has really grown on me these past weeks. Beautiful and poignant. Everything is well done and sounds cohesive. Maybe the songs aren't as strong as in their first efforts, but the playing, the vocals, the production are brilliant. 5.Bloodsports. 7.75. A return to form. Elegant and confident. 6.Head Music. 7.5. Most people dismis this album but I actually think that it is underrated. A new sound, more electronic, and some great songs. 7.Night Thoughts. 7.25. The sound is bigger than in Bloodsports and there's more ambition but the songs are not as strong. 8.A New Morning. 6.75. A few good pop songs but nothing really memorable. I never come back to it, but not a bad record by any means. The new album sounds good but it's too early to rate it.

Hi Guys, First of all, thank you so much for doing a Suede week, it's literally made my year! Secondly and a bit belated as I haven't had time to pop on here due to work, CONGRATULATIONS Joe on your engagement! If you need a wedding cake......!! My Vinyl copy of Autofication landed on my doormat at the weekend and I haven't had a chance to listen yet, so I'll not include it on my list. Here goes.. 8) A New Morning 7) Head Music 6) Night Thoughts 5) Bloodsports 4) Dog Man Star 3) The Blue Hour 2) Coming Up 1) Suede I haven't watched your vid yet so I'll be really interested to see your take on Suede. I generally get a bit miffed when Suede are pigeon holed into the "Brit Pop" bracket - they're far too sophisticated as far as I'm concerned, they just happened to emerge around the same time. Cheers!

Suede is one of the many Britpop bands I was into in the 90's. But I was merely into the singles, didn't buy much of the albums. I think I eventually got their first three LP's and a singles compilation. I think Suede is one of the most interesting Britpop acts but again... due to their strong singles catalogue. I try to understand why Jason manages to pick the odd ball out of the list each time the panel covers a band they are not too familiar with. But I can't get my head around it. When Jason talks about albums he's familiar with most of the times his review is the one I could agree the most on. When he talks about bands he isn't familiar with he seems to lose track(s) every time. Then Jasons arguments are more about the production, the mix, the arrangements and the chord progressions instead of the feel, lyrical or emotional impact of the songs. Don't know if I can make myself clear enough here, but that's the impression I get.

Interesting week. I'd heard absolutely nothing from them before listening through this week. Seemed a lot of people were really into them and loved everything. I liked a few albums a fair amount but the rest I didn't care about as much. It was a week that left me feeling rather conflicted because some of the albums people loved, I just didn't hear the same way (the debut especially - went back to it a couple times). Guess it just happens that way sometimes. 9. The Blue Hour - 2.5 (5.1) 8. Head Music - 3 (5.9) 7. Night Thoughts - 3 (6.1) 6. A New Morning - 3 (6.4) 5. Bloodsports - 3.5 (6.8) 4. Thank you and a very interesting take from each of you. Suede are one of my favourite bands. My top 3, top 4 if you include Sci-Fi Lullabies, are all 5 stars: 1 - Dog Man Star ..... A stellar album. One of my all time favouite albums 2 - Suede ... stunning debut 3 - Coming Up.... Wonderful album. Saw them at the Roundhouse in London in 1996 on this tour. It's in my top 10 gigs attended. Great. (Sci Fi Lullabies... Should really be included in any list of great Suede albums. It's wonderful) 4 - Bloodsports ... 5 - Night Thoughts... Bloodsports and Night Thoughts are pretty equal for me 6 - The Blue Hour 7 - Head Music ... 8 - A New Morning... I've heard Autofiction and first impressions are that I really like it. I'm not hearing the Punk of some reviews...perhaps post punk in places or at least until the chorus kicks in. I get the Interpol reference but my immediate thoughts were that Suede have been listening to Fontaines DC and Iceage. The album doesn't take a breath until Drive Myself Home and after that it's a more measured listen, closing out with a cracking tune in Turn Off Your Brain And Yell. On a first listen I would put it above Bloodsports and Night Thoughts, being more immediate than those two, but lets see how it settles in.

So unique, especially Dog Man, which is not Britpop at all. 1- Suede/Dog Man Star (both perfect 10s for me; with every listen I change my fave) 3- Coming Up (9) 4- Bloodsports (7.5) 5- Head Music (7) 6- Night Thoughts (6.5) 7- Blue Hour (6.5) 8- New Morning (6) Autofiction TBD but very enjoyable so far (7ish so far) (Though not a studio record, Sci-fi is outrageously good. Would be another perfect 10 for me)

No, I don't think DMS can be judged on a couple of listens on demand for a KZbin channel. It needs time. Coming Up is the opposite, that is intentionally instantly listener friendly. They knew, now that Blur and Oasis were about, they had to do something easier to get into than DMS.

My Suede Rank, Rating & mini Reviews: 1) Dog Man Star [1994] (9.5) ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ Leaning more towards Bowie on this really plays to the strength of the band. Solid album though & through. 2) Coming Up [1996] (9.1) ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ A bit more geared to the Brit pop sound while still retaining the glam edge. 3) Autofiction [2022] (8.5) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Still in the same vein as the three previous reunion records maybe with bit more post punk guitar leanings... best of the reunion albums 4) Suede [1993] (8.4) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Solid debut. Doesn't totally reveal what the two following. half Smiths/half 90s alt 5) Night Thoughts [2016] (8.3) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pretty much in the same vein as Bloodsport, I edge this one a smidge higher 6) Bloodsports [2013] (8.2) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Just a great very 80ish high energy synth pop album 7) A New Morning [2002] (7.4) ⭐⭐⭐½ Not as innovative, but I love the general feel of this album. 8) The Blue Hour [2018] (6.5) ⭐⭐⭐ Killer moments on this album but it sure is dragged down by the slower parts. 9) Head Music [1999] (6.3) ⭐⭐⭐ A quick turn to a more dance pop sound, doesn't work well with them or sit well with me.

The Britpop label for Suede is a bit of an oddity. I remember first encountering the word in the music press when it was applied to them. This was ironic because they were probably the least typical of the bands that were later given the same label. I had the first 5 albums. I remember getting an MP3 player in about 2010 and transferring a lot of my CD collection to it. A year or 2 later I needed to delete some music to make space for other albums I wanted to add. A New Morning was one of the albums that I opted to remove. My ranking of the first 5: 5 - A New Morning 4 - Head Music (I think I'm a lot keener on this than the TLM guys) 3 - Coming Up 2 - Suede (one of the great debuts) 1- Dog Man Star (one of my all-time favourite albums - definite 5 stars)

@@TastesLikeMusic A little amusing context; I was 15 years old when Coming Up was released and I was just starting to really get into music. My girlfriend, who was my first love, was 18 and was introducing me to... Well... Everything. Illegally probably. But she was a huge Suede fan and played them all the time, so I got into them pretty hard. No getting hard puns please. The first single I ever bought with my own money was Saturday Night. Plus, that was a #1 album in the UK and had 5 singles that went into the top 10. It was EVERYWHERE. Every mall or record shop you ever went into. So it's fair to say that I have some intense nostalgia for that LP. In fact, it might be the record that reminds me most of being 15 / 16 years old. So I got mad love for Coming Up.

I did listen to a few albums a while back but never got familiar with anything. So most of this music was new to me, and all of it felt new. * For some reason I needed a lot of time with this music in order for me to fully appreciate it. Several of these albums got better with each successive listen. * The debut went from 4 stars to 5 after it sunk in. Brett Anderson has a great voice and he can really pull off falsetto. He's sexy too. This music sounds quite sexy and debauched. The first track "So Young" is I think the best of all the songs I heard. They've been "chasing that dragon" ever since. ;-) * Sorry Dog Man Star fans, I just didn't like the songs on this one as much. If the reaction from the press is any indication though, this one's a grower and I might like it more as time goes on. I read that Bernard Butler wanted a 20-minute solo on the album but was outvoted. I wish they had released it on an ep or something. * I found Coming Up to be a very immediate album. It was 5-stars for me on first listen. I tend to like hedonistic/rockin' Suede more than downer Suede. I love the effect on the vocals heard on the first two tracks. Some great guitar here. Bernard Butler gets all the mentions, but I feel Richard Oakes filled his shoes capably. * Head Music has a great druggy vibe and I dig the trippy electronic elements. The percussion sounds like rushing air on "Savoir Faire" and crunching gravel on "Hi-Fi." * A New Morning dabbles in folk and orchestration. A good album, but it's a step towards ordinary. Some of the light sounds here come dangerously close to adult contemporary. We're also missing the sexy debauchery from previous albums from here on out. * I was rather nonplussed with Bloodsports on first listen, but some of the tracks stood out and improved on subsequent listens. Pretty standard verse, verse, chorus, like most of their music. * They start connecting all the songs together on Night Thoughts which I like. The album is like a trip that reaches a grandiose climax at the end. * I was turned off by The Blue Hour on first listen. I thought it really dragged in spots. Now, I think it's quite good. * Autofiction has a big, full sound. They've still got it! I'd love to see them live. * Cheers mates!!!!!!!!!!

In agreement with you on Dog Man Star, even though it has two of my alltime Suede's favorite songs. My main problem is first five tracks and especially We Are The Pigs and Heroine, which too similar to So Young. So I also got this one at three and half stars.

COCTEAU TWINS!!! FINALLY!! You *must* break your rules and include their collab with Harold Budd, but more importantly, your songs lists will be waaaaayyyy off if you don't listen to their many ep's. Most of their most important and most acclaimed songs were ep-only.

@@echosmyron1278 At the very bottom? Well, that makes one of the two of us. 1986 was the absolute height of CT’s powers from where I’m sitting. @@AbbeyRoadkill1 I'm a self-employed massage therapist, so I could definitely do that if I wanted to. But I'm just doing this for fun and I think trying to do Sly in a week would be stressful and not so fun. I usually only manage 1 or 2 albums a day. I listen to songs repeatedly after the first pass when I'm evaluating an album. I don't even work that much, I already have lots of free time, so I really can't afford to turn down work when it comes. I just need a lot of time with music. I can't just listen to an album once, listen a little more while taking notes and that's it like Jason does. It takes even long when I'm multi-tasking.

‘A New Morning’. Number 1? I have been a Suede fan since their debut album. So bad was ‘A New Morning’ that I could not listen to it more than twice! Number one album definitely ‘Dog Man Star’ followed by debut album , then ‘AutoFiction’. ‘Still Life’ is my all time favourite song. What other British band at that particular time could come up with anything quite as spectacular and grandiose as this soaring track? When I die it’s going to be played as friends and relative leaves the church at the end of my funeral! And so many brilliant B-sides to boot!

Apt timing, they're touring the US next month for the first time in 25 years. _Let's go!_ 11. _Bloodsports_ (2013) - a decade with a broken up, defeated, unappreciated Suede was a bummer. But hope was rewarded with their shocking, triumphant comeback. The album itself is more an exploratory creative exercise & succeeds almost as an imaginary soundtrack to an '80s sex thriller like _American Gigolo_ or _9 1/2 Weeks._ Standouts: "It Starts & Ends With You", "Sometimes I Feel I'll Float Away", b-side "Dawn Chorus" 10. _Head Music_ (1999) - in some ways, a creative dry well due to Brett's addiction, Suede's lofty experimental ambition succeeded on the b-sides: "Situations", "Leaving", "Bored", "Killer", "See That Girl", & the 'Why tf wasn't this a single?' - "Let Go". A perpetually unlucky & self-defeating band, better albums generally existed with their b-sides. Standouts: the superb & unconventional '80s Sophisti-Pop of "Asbestos", the Prince influenced "She's In Fashion" 9. _Love & Poison_ (1993) - newly re-released live album featuring Bernard Butler. Ed Buller's phased out production of Butler's guitars on the debut dulled the real power & Punk virtuousity of his sound. _L&P_ is the snapshot. Standout: "He's Dead" 8. _A New Morning_ (2002) - never shared in it's dislike. If Morrissey released the exact same album, it would be considered one of his best. A warmer, pastoral yet flawed effort, _ANM_ featured some of Oakes' best guitar work & would've benefited from the inclusion of the immaculate b-side "Simon". Standouts: "Obsessions" 7. _Night Thoughts_ (2016) - _Bloodsports_ was the warm-up, _NT_ was the title fight. An eminently relistenable triumph. Suede's kitchen sink Post-Punk Glam _Dark Side Of The Moon._ Standouts: opener "When You Are Young", fist-in-air banger "Outsiders" 6. _The Blue Hour_ (2018) - the _Dog Man Star_ of the reunion era. An incredible, gorgeous work & the band's most emotional. An album improved with the deletion of tracks "Chalk Circles" & "Cold Hands". Standouts: "Wastelands", "The Invisibles", "Life Is Golden" 5. _Suede_ (1993) - the Britpop clarion call. Celebrated by the UK press in '93 as a welcome repudiation to the US Grunge invasion, Suede's debut (in truth) had as much in common with Neil Young & Jane's Addiction as it did T Rex, The Smiths, & Bowie. Standouts: "Metal Mickey", "She's Not Dead", "Pantomime Horse" 4. _Dog Man Star_ (1994) - Suede's _"The Queen Is Dead"._ Ambitious, sumptous.. but an album weakened by it's exclusion of the era's best songs, unceremoniously left to b-sides. Standouts: the Scott Walker-esque "Black or Blue", "The Wild Ones" (shortening the epic, wondrous original extended version was one of several album missteps) 3. _Introducing The Band_ (1995) - live album featuring the freshly recruited Oakes sees the new guitarist do justice to - and in some ways - *improve* Butler's _Dog Man Star_ originals. Buller's molasses production of _DMS_ failed some of it's best tunes (his opinion) and the 1994 tour debut of Oakes is the definitive version of _DMS._ Standouts: "The Asphalt World" with Oakes' soaring guitar solo & beautiful acoustic finale of "Still Life" 2. _Coming Up_ (1996) - the shining Glam return. A love letter to a very specific moment in time & youth. Had to be there. Standouts: the brilliant side 2 run of "She", "Beautiful Ones", "Starcrazy", Picnic", "Chemistry, "Saturday Night" - encaptured & enraptured, a towering Britpop statement that dwarfed _Parklife_ and _Morning Glory._ 1. _Sci-Fi Lullabies_ (1997) - among the greatest works of British music released in the final decade of the 20th century. Godlike. Butler Standouts: "Whipsnade" & "Killing Of A Flashboy", "Modern Boys" (would've been big _DMS_ singles in 1994), and the trio of "The Big Time", "High Rising", "My Dark Star" Oakes Standouts: the 17 year old genius came out blazing with "Together", the _Hunky Dory-esque_ "Bentswood Boys", "Every Monday Morning Comes", the Bauhaus-esque "Have You Ever Been This Low?", the sublime "Jumble Sale Mums", and gorgeous Codling co-write "This Time".

Predictably I share the diss of the others of Jason as the vanilla king - country folky vanilla king. I agree with you sometimes ma dude. I'm a post punk new wave 80s kid so we were never going to agree but you kinda reinforce sometimes age is an attitude and carrying a movement with you and not necessarily to do with years you've been around. I'm not quite with Joe on thinking the debut is better then Modern Life is Rubbish but maybe MLIB's highs are higher but Suede is better overall but both are better than Pablo Honey. I kinda lost interest around the time of Coming Up but the singles of it were good. I remember more of the songs on the debut but Dog Man Star had higher highlights - Pigs, Wild Ones, Daddy's Speeding, Heroine, Still Life, Asphalt World but I've forgotten a lot of the other ones.

They’re literally covering Husker Du in two weeks, and Echo in three. I see Cocteau Twins coming up a month from now too. It will be fun to actually participate in these videos for a change. Def Leppard and Journey discographies back to back was brutal. I only have Dog Man Star, and I like it a lot (#13 in my top 50 albums from 1994, probably 4 1/2 stars), yet I’ve never had the urge to check out their other albums, as the general consensus is that it towers over the rest of their discography. Britpop is a genre that I only like in limited doses (I also own just one Pulp album; I like Blur a bit more, and have five of their albums; and I absolutely despise Oasis).
