Bending of the Bow or Draupadi’s Marriage | வில்வளைப்பு
King Panchala has vowed to marry his daughter Draupadi to Arjuna. Lamenting that the Pandavas are dead, he now wonders how he can fulfil this vow. Draupadi too loves Arjuna from her childhood and wishes to marry him.
On the advice of his astrologer, who assures him that the Pandavas and Kunti are alive, Panchala arranges for the marriage of his daughter. Potential grooms have to bend a mighty bow to win the hand of the girl - a feat that only the sons of Kunti can accomplish.
Arjuna and his brothers arrive at the contest disguised as Brahmins. Many kings, including Duryodhana and Karna, try and fail to bend the bow. Finally, Arjuna does so and marries Draupadi.
Marriage of Subhadra
Duryodhana-insulted that Draupadi ignored him during her svayamvara-decides he wants to get married now. His choice falls upon Subhadra, the sister of Krishna and Balarama. He sends his father's unmarried brother, Vidura, to negotiate and ask for the girl's hand. Balarama promises to give Subhadra in marriage to Duryodhana, but says that he wants to have a word with his younger brother Krishna first. Krishna is aware of the fact that Subhadra secretly is in love with the handsome Arjuna. Therefore, he embarks on the tricky process of turning around his older brother's words so as to fulfil his sister's wish. What follows is an intricate sequence of songs involving a game of words between Krishna, Balarama and Vidura, in which only double meanings count. The play places great emphasis on the rendering of the songs and these word-plays, which makes its performance a treat to lovers of music and Tamil.
