Tag along as we journey through Suez Canal into Mediterranean Sea.
The ship is on a 77 days voyage from Asia to East Coast United States in which we've taken the Suez Canal route. By using Suez Canal instead of around cape of Africa, this will save more than 5000 miles of fuel and time.

My Great Grandfather is laying dead at the bottom of that somewhere. He was working on a British Merchant ship way back in the 50s and another ship crashed into them. His cabin was apparently at the point of impact and he'd just got off duty and gone for a rest. Only 2 British died, the rest thankfully made it to safety.

@@mlproplays3748 when vessels transition from a region of calmer water to the ocean itself, that is quite common and you can definitely feel it on a small vessel. So, although this ship is large, I guess it maybe experiencing some of that.

Great video. There is no better time to learn about the Suez Canal than now. I have a few questions if you can answer. 1. At 1:46, you picked up the Suez pilot. Is that mean the ship would be piloted by a local pilot for this part of the journey? 2. When you were at the 23-Jul portion of the canal, it had 1 lane and southbound ship. Is that mean it was 1 lane traffic thru this part of the canal?

Dude your channel is awesome! Keep up the good work! My father was a merchant marine, I loved hearing him tell his stories about sailing. It fills my heart to be able to finally experience some of what he did.

Wow. Thank you. I left sea circa 35 years ago when there were approx. 45 crew members. Lots of earthy work and lots of fun and 'going up the road'. Now it doesn't seem so much fun and more work. Communications much much better tho.

Wow, a 16 hour transit time!? I had no idea it took that long. I always thought it would be five or six hours, perhaps 8 at the most. Impressive feat of engineering.
@cdgonepotatoes4219
@cdgonepotatoes4219 6 жыл бұрын
it takes that long because the canal has a strict speed limit, the faster you have your huge ship going trough the thing, the higher the damage the water you move causes so unless the company you work for is willing to pay a higher transit tax you'll need to move slowly... still lots better than going all around the Continent

Wow, amazing!! So 193km in 16hrs, the ship moved at an average speed of 12km/hr (sorry I'm not good with knots), maybe slightly faster considering you stopped at Ismailia for your second pilot. Just curious, are there maximum/ minimum speed limits on the Suez canal or is it just dictated by the pilot's common sense and common speed of other ships?
@tonyc5384
@tonyc5384 7 жыл бұрын
I think the speed limit is really about how fast the banks will be eroded, how much equipment and man power to maintain the it and how much the shipping companies willing to paid for the maintenance fee. Interesting read here: www.shipsnostalgia.com/showthread.php?t=10582

True, in the end speed limits, like many other things, all come down to money ;)

it depends on which number are you on the convoy. normally when we pass we are on the first ten of the convoy so it'll take us abouy 8-10hrs max transit time. we dont stop during the change of pilots. the ship woul've been its slowest speed i.e. dead slow ahead or in our case at minimum dead slow ahead of about 9kts. the canal has its rules regarding speeds for transit. normally ships are placed at 1miles ahead of each other and running to about 10kts. pilots can request and increase or decreas of engine rpm if necessary at any time if they see that you are either too slow or coming too fast
