Amazing conversation. Shortly after the pandemic I was diagnosed with late-stage glaucoma and my eyesight literally started to fall off a cliff. My specialist was scared to operate because my optic nerves were in such bad shape so he tried everything including a number of different laser procedures. In the end nothing would work and I was waking up each morning with my sight being notably worse than it was the day before. It literally felt like my life was over. I had to leave my job I had a battle in front of me with an insurance company and every aspect of my life felt like it had come crashing down all around me. I would go to bed at night fantasizing about ways to end it and hoping I wouldn't wake up in the morning. But even at my darkest place I just couldn't make myself do it. Eventually I was operated on as a last ditch attempt to save what was still left. It was quite the journey. I wake up each morning now just grateful I can still use my computer and pursue a new set of goals in my life. No matter how dark things get, the human spirit has a remarkable talent for finding its way back. I don't see very much anymore but what I still see I hold the deepest gratitude for.

I have mild tinnitus (managed increasingly well via shungite and yoga and meditation, running, diet, and working on peace and a better human planet for our children) and several years deep lived experience in suicide (many aspects of education, awareness, attempt survival, coaching others, treatment/recovery innovation, etc). This video is a powerful inspirational example of reinvention of self with a new purpose. Everything is for a reason. Tinnitus is not a life-sentence. It is a bridge to a new life-phase. I love the idea of 'a new silence'. Love and gratitude to you both, Alan Chapman

There is a valve on humanity: acute/prolonged suffering blocks hippocampus function. Compassion, creativity, agency...we "lose" access to, and even memory of, our essential being which knows what the hell we're supposed to do: Be. The Cure! Very cool Kastrup - stick around and continue to share your unique way of thinking! I can relate a lot to this conversation - I have both chronic pain & autism and Buddhist meditation has helped me cope with both for a similar reason - seeing through the belief & attachment to self reduces suffering. I honestly don't mind that I'm in frequent pain. The first 2 years where hardest but then you adjust. I'm doing a PhD in philosophy of mind & love my work, I love my meditation & I feel grateful for the many good things in my life. It's worth sticking around - even when we're faced with challenges. You never know where life will take you next!

Bernardo's experience mirrors my own. I have had chronic pain since age 36 and anxiety since before that. Overwhelmed by living with the pain and anxiety for the last 5 years, the thought of spending the rest of my life in that condition was very intimidating. I didn't understand why these things were happening to me... isn't life supposed to be enjoyable? I was just treading water, trying to stay afloat. As part of my awakening in the last 9 months, I realized that so much of my suffering, almost all of it, was a result of identifying with the condition of the body and my negative thoughts and beliefs. One such belief was that this shouldn't be happening to me. Like Bernardo, I hardly notice the pain anymore. It is just a sensation, and it doesn't have to be anything more than that. I am happier than I've ever been in my adult life and I don't give a second thought to spending the rest of my life with pain and anxiety. I feel so free. My challenges are gifts that allow me to know my essentially unlimited nature.

What I believe I have noticed in Bernardo recently is the growth of an encompassing personal peace. I speculate that this is the result of recognizing that he is fulfilling the role for which he was intended. In continually and generously sharing his knowledge of the nature of reality he is performing an invaluable service to the rest of humanity. What more could be asked of one brief, fragile human lifetime?

This resounds a lot with Advaita Vedanta and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It's always nice to see how different approaches (spiritual, psychological, scientific etc.) end up with the same conclusions, because that deepens that sense of "life is not about me", since many of us at some point have the idea that we're absolutely right about our conclusions. And if we analyze our experiences more objectively, we'll really see how life simply flows and happens, we're just a part of it, and whatever happens to others can also happen to us.

It is totally understandable to want Tinnitus to go away, but paradoxically, the way to help it go away is to not believe that it is real -- that it is physical and that you are damaged. It is created and intensified by the nervous system's response to itself. The more there is fear about it in the nervous system, the more the nervous system will focus on it, and therefore it will become louder. The more we practice not caring about it, the easier it is for the nervous system to stop focusing on it -- and it can start to tune it out, just like if you live by an airport and you stop hearing the planes going by. At that point, if you really tune in, you might be able to hear it, but you can spend great stretches of time being blissfully unaware of it. This was my experience. At some point, as Bernardo commented, it really is not a problem anymore, as bizarre as that sounds given where we start.

I understand the tinitus driving someone to want to so that...!! Most of my life I could not breathe through my nose and as that got worse and worse, brain fog, no sleeping, can't exercise properly, narcolepsy.... the suffering wasn't worth it. I can breathe now and now I know just how badly I was suffering and no one can really understand..... It's hell to not be able to breathe.

I believe that Bernardo is sincere and that he is convinced of everything he says here in this video. I admire Bernardo's intelligence, great capacity for expression, and great work capacity. But I can't understand that a person can motivate himself by telling himself that life is not about himself. We all know that we are going to die, so if there is a goal for life, it couldn't be about the person we are (Vítor, in my case). But if there is no individual thing that survives death, we are just postponed corpses (this individual something is not the person we are, it will be the spectator of the subjective experience, but it is correlated with the person we are, the part whole, as Faggin says ). And procreating would be putting more corpses in this crazy world. I would feel guilty about having fathered my children. Analytical idealism, as I understand from what Bernardo says, does not seem to me to give more meaning to life than metaphysical materialism. What's the point of an arm that is going to be cut off "thinking" that it is part of a body that is much more than itself? Knowing that he will be cut off definitively without hope of any form of survival, may even give him the peace of "thinking" that the suffering has a guaranteed end, but it can also motivate the suffering of the lack of reason to be alive and/or even suicide. Either I don't understand what Bernardo says (that's probably it), or, for me, analytical idealism doesn't give me motivation to live.

I agree with you. Just said the following on another video: I don't see how loss of individuality is a boon. It's separation that enables relationships - the very juice of existence. Every self is precious and lovable, look at how we value each other in this life, the specialness of each of us. And then somehow it's ok if all that goes up in smoke?

When we teach little humans to talk to themselves and others we bestow a super power on them that let's them go from infancy to eventual certain death without much fuss. This is flabbergasting. Handing over a well digested copy of our life experience from conception until death at the moment of death will go a long way to soften the blow. Who will be be able to hold one's shape with no content? One will😊❤ Apparently even a. Copy of every dream is required

Meta positions is what I specialise in in psychotherapy and utilise it to resolve many problems....it accelerates the process maximally.....that couple with other techniques readily enables complete revealing of the programming underlying addictive acting out patterns...thus resolving alcohol, cocaine, sex addictions very quickly ....about 10 to 15 hours usually. I've developed this in the last ten years after 15 years working in dual diagnosis and using psychedelics. It's a natural extension of the psychedelics without the clumsy side of their application.

@adalbertoruiz7651

He noticed that the suffering came from non-acceptance of the fact and that it would continue whether he accepted it or not. So it wasn't about him, life doesn't care if he accepts it or not, the tinnitus would still be there. So it not being about him or his desires, giving up on them was the key to not suffer. The same applies to happiness, because "life" didn't make a commitment on making people happy, it's people that create this expectation. So by giving up on it too, he's open to whatever happens, instead of resisting to things he can't change.

I believe our lives are sacred and valuable gifts. Always remember that. I think of reality as something not that is out there but something that is experienced by being alive. Without you there would be one reality less to be experienced and interpreted. Thank you for bringing this idea of meta suffering to us and i am so glad you came to such realization, even though i can imagine having 2 dental doctors drilling in your ears constantly can be a drag. Excuse me for acting as a physician but I have personal experience with tinnitus. One can reduce or eliminate tinnitus by cut out ALL salt and avoiding NSAIDs. Other medications may increase tinnitus such as antidepressants. The causes of tinnitus vary but the continuation of tinnitus can be reduced by eliminating all salt…..it may take up to six weeks. The modern diet is full of salt so one would need to cook for one self or control the preparation of food. Of course one must eat many vegetables to supply the necessary elements and vitamins.

The design of the security system is bollocks. The siren is loud enough to cause ear damage? That is an obvious danger, not just to intruders, but to the residents of the house. The tinnitus story is pretty horrific, though it appears over time Bernardo's brain has learned to tune out the sound in a top-down fashion. I understand the slant of this video is psychological/spiritual, but I wonder what Bernardo's medical journey was like treating the problem.
