Mike wrote this for Chester kinda like a wake up call for his addiction. Chester had a hard time recording it. Everyone could use a friend like Mike at their time of need.
@NJDEVIL91923 Жыл бұрын
Common misconception, Mike has said time and time again this song has nothing to do with Chesters addiction issues.
@eliteiel97478 ай бұрын
@@NJDEVIL91923 Thats true, the song wasnt written for Chester, it was written for another friend. Infact Mike started composing the song before they even met eachother. When Chester heard it he related to it hard and indeed had a very hard time recording it and performing it. Thats also the reason why the song wasnt played for a while in their 2003 shows, the first time was smokeout 2003 and he was clearly extremely emotional during the performance.

Chester was going though a lot of things, his depression, drugs and he was isolating himself. Mike wrote this and was inspired by Chesters drug use.Chester at first had a really hard time singing this. He said, he would sing two lines, start crying, have to leave the room, came back in and repeat. He said it was so hard to do. It hit to close to home. It meant a lot to him. RIP Chester. Miss you.

Breaking the habit is definitely one of their greatest songs, and for me one of the best songs of all time, because it has a really dang hard yet important message combined with a clear and true striking sound. Its a completely different type of music then the rest of the album it is in which makes it stand out even more and yeah, its just a beautiful song to listen to. Definitely a heavy one but incredibly beautiful

Breaking the habit was made back in 2003 btw and it was featured in the album “Meteora” also a fun fact joe Han (Linkin park’s DJ) directed this video

When I was younger, I always thought that Chester didn't intend to fall off the building in this video but the shockwave of the beat caused him to slip, didn't help that the overhead shots always made him seem closer to the edge of the building then he really was.
@kristimarriner76733 жыл бұрын
I’ve always taken this song as a suicide note. “ I don’t know how I got this way, I’ll never be all right” “I’m breaking the habit tonight”. Seems like everyone else seems to think the opposite, the person is turning their life around. Wish I could see it that way. Tough to hear it and I still can’t watch the video. 😢💔🥺

I agree, the " I'll never fight again " " and this how it ends" makes it definitely clear this person isn’t getting better.

It is about suicide due to depression and dru abuse trying to deal with the underlying mental health issues. The telling clues here are Clutching my cure is a handgun. I lcok the door and try to catch my breath again. He is anxious about this decision to heal himself of something he admits he will never be alright from again. His "cure" is to end himself and his suffering with a bullet. We know it's a gun because of the bridge which is the emotional revelation to his plan. I'll paint it on the wall.... because it is all MY FAULT. I'll NEVER fight again... and this is how it ENDS. He intends to blow himself away. His blood will be on the walls from the suicide. He just wants the suffering to be all over because he has lost all hope. It's a very heavy song.

This song was Chester's favorite song and shakes me to the core hearing it after his passing. I'm in tears because the saddest part about this song is that it could be interpreted as breaking the habit of addiction. But when you watch this masterpiece of a music video Chester is showing us he broke the habit by jumping from the building breaking free of the pain because in the last chorus he says "I know I'll never be alright." Its goodbye. His spirit leaves him and becomes one with the other people struggling. It's like I can feel that spirit right with me now as I listen to it. Haunting, devastating, and their deepest darkest song.

You know, this was the song which originally was supposed to be only as instrumental. It ended up being the only song band members couldn't perform at the Chester Bennington's farewell concert (Linkin Park & Friends) because it was too much for them.

I've noticed a lot of reactors will do music videos from LP's first two albums and assume the upload date is the release date. Those albums came out before KZbin existed, so the music videos were put on KZbin years later.

I have listened to this song on repeat a thousand times and it took me years to realize that at the end of the song as Chester is saying 'Tonight' his voice becomes distorted as it fades away. It was due to the fact that it was the actual time he made the jump off the building in the music video.
@livvyflynn93643 жыл бұрын
Mike wrote the song, but the lyrics were quite different. Instead of "I don't know what I'm fighting for or why I have to scream" it was "I don't know what we're fighting for or why we have to scream". It was kinda more from Mike's perspective originally, but they tweaked it to be more personal for Chester. The first time they performed it live the crowd was silent, and by the end of the bridge, Chester was crying. Super emotional song for him. BTH was a Meteora song, but 'Halfway Right', a One More Light song, is what I like to call it's cousin. Kinda similar topics, super emotional. It was never played live, only for what I assume was the same reason BTH wasn't played live for a long while after the album came out.

I've been a fan of Linkin Park for about 16/17 years now, started listening to them super young bc my uncle was a fan, I remember borrowing his copy of Minutes to Midnight to burn myself a copy lol When I was 14 I bought a copy of Hybrid Theory, I'd only ever heard the singles off it so I was super excited, and jesus, that album spoke to me in ways I'd never experienced before. I was a depressed, chronically ill, abused, as-yet-undiagnosed autistic kid who got bullied and teased on a daily basis, I was actively self-harming, planning my suicide and just absolutely miserable. I cried myself to sleep every night. And after listening to HT, for the first time in my life I felt understood. I thought "wow, I'm not the only one that feels this way?", it was cathartic. I listened to it on repeat every single day for months, I was just in awe that someone was able to put all these sad, ugly feelings into words. I'll never be able to accurately explain the love I have for this band, and this album especially. Chesters death hit me like a truck, at the time I hadn't been an active LP listener (of their newer stuff at least) for about 5 years, but when I found out I just went home and cried for the rest of the night. I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that this man, who understood what I was going through at the worst time in my life, was gone. Just like that. He helped me, and continues to help me, in so many ways. And he couldn't help himself. I think that's the scariest part, knowing that what he wrote and felt was exactly what I was feeling, came to such a tragic end. Like, yeah I'm doing better now in comparison to 10 years ago, but what if I still end up like him? What if I can't help myself in the end? It's genuinely terrifying to think about. But anyway omg complete tangent sorry, but this song just makes me feel how HT makes me feel, in terms of relating to it. Locking the door, knowing that this isn't right, etc. I have a lot of emotions rn lmao

Mike wrote it, originally with slightly different lyrics. Chester might have been involved with rewriting the lyrics. But it was not uncommon for Mike to write a song from Chester’s perspective, knowing that he would sing it. And I just have to say they’re reminiscent of Twenty One Pilots in the way Led Zeppelin is reminiscent of Greta Van Fleet. 😂 LP was hugely influential on a lot of current music.
