It is; I'm a Metalhead... Well, I love loads of music, but I generally stay away from "mainstream" stuff. So for something to get through and move me says something. Then again, songs that are written for movies tend to have something a little more special. - Same for something like 'Writing's On The Wall', even if some people didn't like how it's sung, it's a moving song.

Art comes from the artist. It is a partial external display coming out of the part of the whole of the internal. When it comes to art or expression/proclamation, what you are is what is going to come out. For better or for worse. The good and the bad. That is why character matters. If someone has refined character and integrity, it may stand that their art will be accordingly productive, acceptable, useful, profitable, and enduring. The other reason that one should observe both art and artist is wisdom. I can quote the expression and art of Marilyn Monroe, to use a popular example. But when examining the artist and her life, we see that her life was nothing to be esteemed or envied. Why would I take life advice from someone who hated life? Why would I admire and draw on art from an artist who often put out destruction in her life and others? In this case, if the person lacked ingrity in creating authentic art in exchange for riches or popularity and was snared by it, it's only human to approach their ensuing work with caution.

2 years later and im still amazed. this song makes me cry, smile, laugh, and just be at total peace. if i fell in love ever, i would take it and hold it dearly..love is like a object. needs to be protected, loved, and cared for. if i ever fall in love i would want it to be beautiful, just like elio and oliver. for it to be wholesome, and treasured. known and cared. the feeling would be wonderful, oh how i would love to actually feel...love.

"Cursed by the love that I recieved From my brother's daughter Like Hephaestion, who died. Alexander's lover." Alexander the Great campaigned and fought across Asia Minor accompanied by his life long friend and military companion, Hephaestion. It is rumoured because of their close friendship, that they were lovers. When Alexander routed the forces of Darius III of the Persian empire, he fled, leaving behind his extended family and mother, called Sisygambis. Alexander and Hephaestion came to the tent of the Royal Persian family, and Sisygambis mistakenly knelt before Hephaestion's feet mistaking him for Alexander. When she was corrected, she shrank away in embarassment, but was excused by Alexander, and addressed her by the words "You were not mistaken, Mother; this man too is Alexander." Alexander treated her and her family with honour, and she became devoted to him. And in doing so, he treated her as his own mother. Later, she would give her granddaughter Statiera II, who was the daughter of Darius III to him as his wife in Susa. Alexander and Hephaestion leaves to go on a new campaign, but Hephaestion falls ill and dies, causing Alexander immense grief, as though a love had passed away. Alexander himself would die shortly afterwards, but the true cause is still debated. So, the reference to brother's daughter stems from Alexander's marriage to his adopted mother's grandchild, daughter of his rival, and thus had a kingly brother status. Hepahestion married Statiera's sister, and in doing so, the friends become brothers-in-law. Because of the short time between their marriages and their deaths, Alexander the Great and Hephaestion are somewhat tragic for their loss both to each other and history.

that is a nice story but it really isnt accurate...he is literally referencing his brothers daughter. when they were kids Sufjan and his siblings promised each other to never have kids because they never wanted to do what their mother did to them. Of course that was as silly promise, and Sufjan has mentioned his love for "his brothers daughter" more than once in his music - saying its "cursed" is likely a reference to the silly and unrealistic promise they made each other and because of the guilt he may feel for thinking of his mother in that sort of light Haphaestion/Alexander is separate reference and leans mostly on a myth that Haphaestion and Alexander were lovers - as that would be a direct reference to the movie he was writing song for - and would be another "cursed" love. In reality the two were likely just very close friends
@arthurcab3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this! Even though I was somewhat familiar with Alexander’s and Hephaestion’s relationship, I never understood the verse about his “brothers daughter”.

I remember sitting on the couch with my grandma watching the oscars, which was a tradition for us, and screeching when I heard Sufjan’s name, as I didn’t know he was winning an Oscar up until that point. My grandma respects my music taste a little more and said “if he got nominated for an Oscar, he must be amazing!” And now requests to listen to every song I’ve ever heard Oh and I moped on the couch when he didn’t win lmao I was angrily eating Oreos I don’t think anyone had ever seen anything so hilarious
