In the book Clive is not more in love with Maurice, and he even try to turn him straight because he thinks being gay is a phase. Is so sad... and toxic, but sad
@rumblefish92 ай бұрын
@@marielaso9287 The book itself is semi-autobiographical about Forster's first love. In truth, they drifted apart slowly for years and years and Forster didn't know how to write it so he wrote Clive convincing himself that it was a phase. But Clive's reasonings for turning straight in the book are shallow and they make no sense at all. He doesn't even want to be naked in front of his own wife. The clue to why I think he still loved Maurice is this passage: To the end of his life Clive was not sure of the exact moment of departure, and with the approach of old age he grew uncertain whether the moment had yet occurred. The Blue Room would glimmer, ferns undulate. Out of some external Cambridge his friend began beckoning to him, clothed in the sun, and shaking out the scents and sounds of the May term." The Blue Room and among the ferns were places that Clive had held dear to his heart--places he associated with Maurice. As fr being "toxic", being gay was illegal and people at that time often chose the same life Clive did. E.M. Forster may not have married but he was very much in the closet (only his close friends knew). It's easy for us to label them "toxic" or "cowards" but it was a matter of survival. This was some 10+ years after Oscar Wilde's trial and imprisonment--something he never recovered from. The risks and stakes were greater. This is why I think people ought to be kinder to people like Clive. They didn't have the same freedoms or opportunities to live their lives as they wanted like we do now.

Maurice is such an underrated movie, very progressive for 1987, narrating a pure and loving story...and call me by your name is ,in my opinion, one of the best movies of the last few years. Wonderful mix!! Well done!!

Written by E M Forster in 1913, but not published until 1971, posthumously, in the UK. 💜💜 Sad when people do not read and think movies evolve from no-one and nothing, read books!!
@mariasofianou Жыл бұрын
@@XavierRadić_NZL Since this is a video, i chose to comment on the cinematic adaptation of the book and that's why i mentioned the release date of the movie and not the book. If anything i think a lot of people that are not huge readers have read the book in recent years specifically because the movie made such a good impression. In that regard, if a good movie adaptation helps people read books that they wouldn't have before, that's a plus in my book. A good movie does not diminish the book , on the contrary, it compliments it!

I don't know why but in Japan "Maurice", "Another Country" and "A Room With A View" were quite popular during the 80's through early 90's. Probably..those films kind of remind us of " Shojo manga" genre.

I wish there could be more movies like Maurice. The fact that it's a full story not just about the romance but also finding and facing oneself, not just a sad fling two little gay boys had in summer and parted or one of em had to die at the end. It's quite frustrating how gay romance now is made for the aesthetic not like it's written to tell stories to real people who'd wish to see a full satisfying representation and a happy ending
@satyre_1 Жыл бұрын
Well, this one isn't quite a happy ending, but DAMN if it isn't a good movie. I highly recommend "Portrait of a Lady on Fire".

@rumblefish93 жыл бұрын
Part of the story was Forster's own life. Clive was modeled after his first love, H.O.M or Hugh Owen Meredith. Forster even dedicated "A Room With A View" to him. George Emerson is also modeled after H.O.M. Lucy Honeychurch's reluctance to fall in love with George mirrored that of Forster's own feeling for his first love. Much like Clive, H.O.M eventually married.

this might be just a fluke, but at 2:42 you can see Clive smiling as he gets married to Anne, but then stops smiling as he walks off the camera. I think he loved Maurice in the end and I would really have wanted them to stay together bc they’re so happy w each other 🥲

Exactamente.

Two of my favourite films connected through music. I saw "Maurice" as young gay man, when it first came out in 1987 and it never left me. I always weep at the end, both for Maurice and Alex, as well as for Clive, whose life choices are so sad. I then searched high and low for for the soundtrack - beautiful. It is so special that James Ivory is connected to both films. So happy he received an Oscar for "Call Me By My Name". He and Ismail Merchant who made "Maurice" (under Merchant Ivory productions) were lovers too but kept it very much under wraps. The novel by EM Forster is one I read quite frequently - so moving, as are all his works. I also found an epilogue to "Maurice" a few years ago and it helps complete the story. It is fascinating that by them going into nature to live, that they can survive as lovers. They have to escape the real world in order to survive. Here is link for all of you: www.tumblr.com/mauriceclivealec/17581359531/epilogue-to-maurice
