Tribute to the late Great Sugar Minott, being interviewed about his life's work, he talks about how his one wish was to be recognized more in his own country.
Many great Jamaican reggae artists say the same thing, many who are famous in Europe and US are not known that well in Jamaica, if you are into roots reggae and go to JA you will notice this pretty quickly.

Sugar Minott was a man of good motives in music, to better people and his community, to uplift the oppressed and to give praises unto JAH. He was an entertainer, yes, but he had greater purposes which is clear in his lyrics and in his interviews. He was not appreciated as much as he should have been and deserved to be more respected, especially by Jamaicans, but he had a greater mission and therefore kept his focus and did not become bitter. And never forget he identified as Rasta in terms of livity but did not worship H.I.M. Emperor Hailee Selassie I, but worshipped Christ Jesus as Lord and Saviour and the Son of JAH. That was his most powerful message and it is in his lyrics too. Excellent interview!

That's why it should first truly come from the heart and love for the thing that one does, not for anything that one receives. The main thing was Sugar Minott truly loved what he was doing and put his heart into it. He cared about the youth. He cared unselfishly about the youth, the poor and those living in the ghetto. Big respect. That's what made him so great. I am very lucky and privileged to have seen him performing live at live at Sunsplash 1985. He was absolutely brilliant. For me, he got the crowd going.

Minott died on 10 July 2010 at the University Hospital of the West Indies in St. Andrew Parish, Jamaica, after being admitted earlier that day. The cause of death remains undisclosed. He had a heart condition since early 2009, and cancelled several performances in May 2010 due to chest pain
