First time hearing Joni play Sugar Mountain, one of my all time requests for my guitar Bro, Dave, he'd roll his eyes but he knew it made little sis cry. Enjoyed this. Please everyone. Show some class and respect music and musicians, singing their very hearts and souls to us. ✌️.

Mitchell: "In 1965 I was up in Canada, and there was a friend of mine up there who had just left a rock'n'roll band (...) he had just newly turned 19, and that meant he was no longer allowed into his favorite hangout, which was kind of a teeny-bopper club and once you're over 18 you couldn't get in there anymore(...) But he was over the hill. So he wrote this song that was called "Oh to live on sugar mountain" which was a lament for his lost youth..."

"Sugar Mountain" is a song by Canadian folk rock singer and composer Neil Young. Young composed the song on November 12, 1964-his 19th birthday-at the Victoria Hotel in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay), where he had been touring with his Winnipeg band the Squires. Its lyrics are reminiscences about his ...

On the Peel Sessions with James Taylor Joni quotes the song as written by a friend who was upset by turning 21 when he realized he was barred from the teen club where his band mates and girl friends hung out. If she'd written it i think she would have said so.

Ian & Sylvia and Buffy Sainte-Marie had both recorded "Circle Game" in '66, so Joni had already written it by at least late '66. I had thought that Ian & Sylvia had heard Joni sing it in Canada, but maybe they had just heard her sing at the Mariposa Folk Festival and not actually this song. Of course, she may have written the song as a response well before this recording of "Sugar Mountain."

Please - Neil is an emotive singer. He sings great - as Neil. Like Dylan and many others. The point was that Joni is an excellent singer, by any measure. That said - I like Neil's version much better. Not as sweet and pretty, but Joni doesn't capture the mood. Kinda like her singing 'me and my uncle'. Pretty, but the Dead capture the mood of 4 days in the saddle! I guess Joni was still a folk singer back then, and hadn't found her' voice'. These are two great, different artists!

Neil plays the song slower with more feeling. This seems slightly rushed but still a good version.

I knew an ex-con who used to hand out around the Newman center near CSUN. He resented the fact that non of the girls would pay him no mind. Occasionally he would lurk about at night like a peeping Tom in the dark. If he saw any romance taking place he would taunt the lovers as they stealt away after. "Having fun?" He would ask in a most frightful manner that obliterated all presumption of anonymity..

At the start of the video she's tuning the guitar and she says "I never tune in standard"... "This is a tune in standard". So she's tuning to standard, which is in habitual for her.

Try a few years earlier, when she was Joan Anderson and appeared on "Let's Sing Out" at least a couple of times, once on the same show with "The Chapins", of which Harry Chapin was a member. She could sing and pick quite well. "Let's Sing Out" was a Canadian music show on television, and the host, whose name I cannot remember, would sometimes join the guests in song.
