Bobbie Gentry was an amazing singer-songwriter. She stopped performing in the early 80’s and according to rumors, lives in Tennessee.

How many singer songwriters can claim that they influenced the Beatles back in the 1960s? This guy is one of them!

Beautiful piece of art and storytelling. Heard it on radio often as a kid in NYC, possibly in relation to the 1976 film, or just that it's a great song. It was so arresting and unique and elegaic you had to listen. It captured your imagination . Who was Billie Joe, why did he do it? Mournful and poetic yet so beautiful and artistic. Bobbie Gentry was a special talent.

When I watched the documentary on KZbin about Buffy St Marie, about how she's a phony Indian, I just lost respect for her totally. What she's doing here is just total nonsense

Now for a lot of years people have been intrigued by this song and I realize that the point is that this young man obviously took his life and it really upset Bobby Gentry and that's why she couldn't eat and obviously her papa was not too keen on this area. It was probably because he was racist and a city and cocktall Ridge was where the African Americans lived. Ok, well I think Bobby Gentry and Billy Joe were in love they had a child but they knew neither family would accept this arrangement and the child would probably be killed anyway one way or the other are giving away. So they did the Unspeakable threw the baby off the bridge and one of them could live with it. The other couldn't, this is why she comes back in flowers off the bridge that are ode to Billie Joe

One of the few songs to tell so much with so few words... there is a complex multi layered story going on here... and not many hit songs can hold a candle to it... some can... but it definitely stands out as an original concept.

Born in south Georgia on a frosty morning in Dec. of '56, this sing means a lot to me.Mickey was a Gem, a treasure, and we have lost most of the ones we had ; Prine, Clark, Campbell, Goodman, Watson, etc.

What do you think they were throwing off the bridge? I'm guessing she got pregnant and had a miscarriage... or worse... premature birth? And through his baby off the brio, which causes him to jump? Idk... it's always what I thought happened....

To bad they didnt have the guts, integrity to not sing to a recorded track-shows musical immaturity-such a good song destroyed by nonmusical morons
I was twenty years of age in 1974, I had moved to London from a small country town in Dorset & was working near Victoria Station just down the road from this theatre. I idolised Joni Mitchell. How did I miss this performance, it’s one of my life’s regrets. 😊😍

Late 1975/early 76 was a cool time - GP, Bruce, Nils Lofgren, Dr Feelgood, Television, Ramones. Gp’s first two albums are classics. Great live too.
