This fight destroyed Duran's carreer. He should never have quit. He just couldn't deal with Leonard's clowning antics which he did to hide his fear. Duran fell for it and was confused and frustrated by it. All he wanted to do was fight Leonard. Duran was never the same after this fight which totally destroyed his reputation. He will nevet recover from it and will haunt him to his grave. In the ring you are either carried out on your shield victorious or carried out flat on your back defeated. In the ring you never quit. It is the unspoken rule. A taboo. Hating your opponent and respecting your opponent are two different things. Hating makes your opponent makes you careless, you make mistakes. However, respecting your opponent makes you disciplined and careful, not underestimating your opponent. Sadly in this fight Duran was defeated by his own pride.

2 things, the results of each of the first 2 fights were primarily a result of factors outside the ring. First, each guy suffered from one of the deadly sins. Pride (Leonard 1) and gluttony (Duran 2) and the other capitalized on it. 2nd, Duran gained favor with the folks of Montreal and you could feel it. Rematch, Ray Charles of whom Ray Leonard was named singing America the Beautiful really set a "home court" feel for Ray.

Leonard out beat Duran in speed and boxing techniques. Leonard was able to humiliated and psychologically defeat him. Leonard outright outsmarted and humiliated Duran in a way Duran never expected. Duran was physically and psychologically defeated and he knew he was going to be knocked out either in that 8th round or the next after that. Leonard was way a faster and smarter fighter than Duran. Duran knew that and had to come up with an excuse to stop the fight. Duran was not able to handle the humiliation because he never knew how to deal with it.

Although it showed his heart and stamina, it wasn't his style of fighting. In this fight you can tell from the first round that Leonard was going to win. Simply because he was dancing around the ring and using his jab to keep Durant at bay. Not flat footed and getting backed into the ropes like he did in the first fight. Duran was definitely frustrated and mentally exhausted. He had no answer for Leonard. If you're not standing in front of him or trading punches he's not so great. Duran was an old school fighter. He came to fight, not to play tag. He couldn't win playing a game of tag against a guy so fast & agile. The guy had a long & heralded carreer & suddenly the desire to fight was gone in the snap of fingers. It's not the 1st time it happened in boxing. I fought almost everyday from 3 or 4 years old up till about 12 years until one day I hurt a kid more than I could bare. I couldn't fight for a while after that. I hated it. I backed down a few times after that & I was no longer a mark for anyone. I went a few years until high school before I fought again, but in those fights I didn't lose my temper. I just fought until they realized it wasn't worth it. Duran did come back for a 3rd time against Ray & went the distance. He also won 3 titles in higher weight classes. This guy did it all & had nothing more to prove.

Duran simply lost his desire after Montreal. In the first fight, he fought like a hungry wolf. This time, he appeared very lethargic right from the jump. There was no desire. There was no motivation. There was no fire. Perhaps the fame and money did it. Who knows? The point is after Montreal, he relaxed.

Didn’t look like Duran quit. It looked like some type of miscommunication between the ref and Duran. But it’s sad it ended this way after the way the first fight went. Sugar Ray was on his bicycle in this fight. Yes Ray won this boxing match but it really was a production of entertainment, showboating and not the fight everyone wanted to see. As time and years went on we saw Duran prove and redeem himself in great fights with Hagler and Iran Barkley and others.

The first fight didn't have more skills. The first fight was simply Duran's style of fighting. So it was toe to toe brawling. Which is more exciting for the crowd. But this fight showcased real skill. Sugar Ray Leonard's style of boxing. Their age wasn't a factor at all. It was just one boxer mentally defeated the other. Real boxing is a mental battle. Duran lost that war.
