Leonard here shows superior speed, accuracy, defense, timing, ring generalship. If Hagler hit harder as a middleweight in this position he would have take care of a little welterweight. I doubt Leonard beats Jake Lamotta, Frank Klaus, Stanley Ketchel the more aggressive harder hitting guys. I think Haglers boxing ability and punching power are both overrated. He was maybe the toughest mw next to Lamotta but agood middleweight is supposed to destroy a welterweight not get dominated by one.

Sugar Ray Leonard's excessive holding will always prove to me that he never wont this fight because he never actually boxed the entire fight. He held so much that Marvin couldn't fight. Now if anyone thinks that should be normal, you shouldn't be watching boxing. There was a time where excessive hugging in ONE round would cost you a point! Now, you can do it an entire fight and be called a CHAMPION? I mean, WTF!? Who in their right boxing mind thinks excessive holding is part of boxing!? In what Championship fight, has anyone ever seen this much HOLDING!?

The judges decide who wins a round by the catergories of .. ring generalship, effective aggressiveness, defense and clean punches. Two judges had it a little closer. Remember judging is opinion . This fight has been analyzed for decades by boxing experts and computer technology and the fact is that Marvelous Marvin Hager landed 73 percent of all clean punches landed. If Leonard threw a 6 punch combination and landed 1 clean punch, the crowd went crazy and obviously his score went up, however the fact is this. Apart from the fact that Haggler should never have agreed to Leonards demands for a bigger ring than the standard size and bigger gloves than the standard size, so Leonard could run away from Haggler and Haggler would find it more difficult to hurt Leonard with the bigger gloves. Haggler should have never agreed to the fight when Leonard ran away from Haggler when they were both in their prime and refused to fight Haggler

Sugar Ray with his non effective, jaw dropping, crowd cheering flurry punching that did nothing other than hit Marvins gloves followed by hugs that even the Care Bears would be envious of. I have watched and re-watched and in slow motion and feel bad for the morons that thought Ray Leonard won, because they clearly weren't analyzing the fight, and Marvelous Marvin Hagler himself, for being robbed of a victory. Start of the 5th round, Marvin just walked him down the whole fight, and he did it beautifully. I'll never erase that 118 -110 score from my mind though.

Hagler was my all-time favorite boxer. But he was lacklustre on this occasion. Probably his poorest overall performance ever. Leonard may have been backpedaling all fight but his punching was far more accurate and therefore scored more points.. And of course there's no rule saying you can't fight using that tactic . I think the "draw" Leonard got with Hearns wes a travesty. Hearns beat him all ends up that night.

Marvelous Marvin is my favorite fighter of all time and the greatest middleweight in my lifetime. I’ve watched this fight multiple times and can’t get away from the fact that Marvin gave away the first four rounds and Leonard won the tactical game by stealing close rounds by throwing combinations at the end of them and impressing the judges. The fight was lost before the first bell by Hagler when he caved to Leonard’s demands for the 12 rounds, larger ring and gloves. Had It gone 15 rounds, Hagler would have knocked Ray out because he was gassed after 12 and Marvin was coming on. RIP Marvelous Marvin Hagler.

Hagler won this. Leonard is a psychological boxer but the psychology is on the judges not on the opponent, it's all about trying to make it look like he is controlling the fight by constantly running away and playing tag game show off. Hagler does not respect his punch because they are harmless. Leonard plays on his opponent frustration by not fighting toe to toe and then once in a while let him come in and throws a flurry and it's rabbit runaway again.. Just questionable boxing. Mayweather junior took this and pushed it even further and it's not quite boxing. To be fair Leonard has a great hook technique coming from the hip and shoulders on both side that is like a flash. He also uses it for body shot. I give him that. But i don't think he beat haggler, he just make him look bad by dancing with haggler looks like those dogs trying to approach a standing horse and cannot catch any of his legs.

I’m a Duran fan .. but imo Leonard won the fight .. at no point was Leonard in trouble . And was clever enough to steal rounds by last 10 seconds flurry’s which were going in at 10-10 rounds .. why didn’t Marvin pressure him enough ….

With excessive hugging, how could he ever be in trouble? He literally wont the fight by cheating his way to victory via excessive holding.

Marvin lo presionó lo más que pudo hermano. Lo q pasa es que Leonard era demasiado inteligente y rápido. Los dos eran unos fenómenos. Pero merecidamente ganó Leonard

That is the exact flawed logic that blinded the judges. How can a flurry that were mostly pitty pat punches which most were hitting the gloves of Hagler be enough to steal a round when Hagler was outworking Leonard most of the rounds and landing the more damaging punches? It had it a close fight but I think that reasoning completely absurd

Leonard did not win that fight Hagler was more the aggressor all throughout the fight also most of the punches Leonard had thrown was mostly on Hagler's gloves and air punches

I suspect there was some kind of fix going on. Hagler landed the better shots, but curiously never pounced with any aggression like he had done in *every* prior fight. It's like he had to carry out some order to let it go the distance. Then he disappeared to France, never argued, never fought again. I could only detect SRL winning like 2 rounds at most, with many being draws, and MMH clearly winning a few rounds (it's been a year or so since I watched it all more closely and sort of kept score). I'm not an establishment shill like 99% of the people on these forums...

Never tire of this. A classic of the ages. Leonard like the matador to the bull. Proving boxing is about movement, being smart, defence and counter offence. He approached this the way Bruce Lee wòuld have if he was a boxer. The art of boxing. Well thats my view but the opposing view is he run and stole the fight! 😂 Hagler was one dimensional in this fight plodding forward throwing the same punches hoping he would grind down Leonard and knock him out but he fell into the trap.

Hagler is one of my all time favorites, but he did not win more than four rounds in this fight and that’s generous. He was completely outfoxed.

@@rowdyrx6109Damn right. I mean, where do we start, the excessive holding SRL did? He held when he was in trouble, he held when he would miss, he held at times for the sake of holding. Warned throughout the ENTIRE fight about his excessive holding. The non effective punches that were nothing more than gloves padding Marvins gloves and shoulders? Stealing rounds with combo flurry's that weren't punches and had no actual power behind them? Ray, ran, jabbed and held or rushed in, missed and held, flurried when he was getting beat down and ran back. It was the most pathetic performance I have ever seen any boxer display. I had always respected SRL, thought he was great, but I had never seen him cheat to win a fight. I say to anyone to watch this fight again digesting what I typed here and try to convince yourself that it isn't true.

Plus SLN’s repeated low blows…and gobs of Vaseline on his chest so MH’s blows would slide off and the huge gob on the inside of his left elbow at the beginning of the last round so he could smear it on his side to deflect MH’s body shots…blatant BS!

To be fair... Hagler would have won if it was 15. But the 12 we got Leonard had more speed accuracy and finesse. He just didn't have the power and Hagler had too much chin. I can't call that a win

Hagler fights going to the judges, most times were unfavorable even as a champ. I never seen Marvelous ever being shook up from a punch. It was said he had a very hard skull! He was amazing. It used to be back in the day where you had to literally knockout the champion to become the champion...except if you were Ray Leonard. And to make it worse Leonard did not agree to 15 rounds, needed a ring the size of a 2 bedroom apartment, and never gave a rematch to Marvelous
