I find it hard to celebrate Leonard for this 'victory'. In the first fight, which was one of the great fights of all time, he really fought. In this fight he just played around, showboated, and refused to really engage until he frustrated Duran to the point of giving up. Giving up in such a fashion is disgraceful, but taunting a man into giving up, rather than defeating him in a fight, is nothing to be proud of. This memorable debacle is the one everyone remembers, but it was their first fight that was one for the ages. Both fighters went on to a number of great fights, but this one was an embarrassment to both, and a bitter disappointment to those of us who had seen the fight in Montreal.

The comments on this thread show you how little people really know about boxing and how their emotions color what they see. Let me start by saying that I'm a huge fan of the so called 3 Kings of the 80s (Duran, Leonard, Hagler and Hearns). But what sickens me is when I hear people say that Floyd Mayweather would not have been a dominant fighter in this era. These people who obviously never followed Mayweather's entire career accuse him of being a runner. Yet somehow they praise Leonard's elusive tactics in this 2nd fight with Duran which is as much running or more than Floyd ever did. Mayweather was in his late 30s when he relied heavily on his defensive style, Ray Leonard was only 24 when he used this tactic against Duran.

Before the rematch, Leonard had learned that because of his partying lifestyle, Duran needed up to a year to fully prepare. Duran didn't seem to have the answers to deal with Leonard's movement. Poor show that he didn't keep going because there were plenty of rounds left for the sweet one to slow down so the fight could have looked quite different then. However, I guess Duran didn't like taking Leonard's stinging punches and could have ended up taking a beating. Maybe a wise move to quit but forever remembered for , "No mas".

Mayweather would NOT last with either of these if he actually fought (offense .. putting combinations together) with the defense ( "the sweet science). he doesn't put a lot of offense our because he doesn't have the courage to stay in there and absorb a punch or duck it or slip it ( repeatedly) through ALL rounds! he pop shots to get out of dodge. these guys are The Real sweet science ( OFFENSE with Defense ). he would Not even be in Top Five or top 10 of that time. the Bigg wasn't the only good one tht era. the guys they beat were extremely good.

Duran was not unwell, before this fight, even back then, the rules of engagement where thorough, through the Doctor at the ring side, and 72hours before the fight, complete with blood and drug tests. It was Durans preparation that was poor, along with, sadly his disrespect, to his opponent and lack of boxing measurement, after winning his previous fight against Leonard, he showed the same lack of measurement and respect to Tommy Hearns, and to Marvin Hagler. Duran obviously had incredible skill and toughness, however, for me, he was not the consummate professional, the other three of the magnificent four, were far greater in professionalism and toughness, the Hearns fight with Duran, rubber stamps my thought/view. I do not look at Roberto Duran with rose coloured glasses, he was just tough, and if all that i have read is true, he is not a good man, both in and outside of the ring.

@raulymendezacosta69885 ай бұрын
@raulymendezacosta69885 ай бұрын
