This is an unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer the newer generation. The brawls with no finish actually irritates me. I prefer someone to just get plainly outboxed for 12 rounds than brawling for 12 rounds with no finish.
I promised my brother I would invite him to this fight thinking it would be held at Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas (we live in Calif. 1 hr away by plane). Went to buy tickets and found out it was going to be held in Montreal, Canada - WTF!!! I bought 4 very expensive front row tickets and when we got to Chicago we missed our connecting flight and they said there's no way we can make it now. Tried to charter a single engine or twin engine plane and they said no way you'll get there on time unless u charter a lear jet, so we did. We had 4 front row tickets and there was NO WAY we were going to miss that fight. Turned out to be EXTREMELY expensive but since we were Roberto Duran's fans it was worth every penny. I know, who gives a fuck but I'll never forget this fight and what we went through to get there. At least he won which made it all worth it!!!

Duran was one of the greatest fighters of all time, if you look at it. If you look at the history, you will see that he simply did not get the recognition that he deserved. He was truly an underrated fighter, probably because he was not American, and the media especially focused more on the American Fighters back then. Also because, since he was not American, then the media wanted everybody in the United States to remember him as the No Mas fighter. Since I was a kid, I admit that I was one of the ones who saw him that way for a long time, until I educated myself about him and found out how many fights he had which was a lot and also reviewing his career. He fought some of the best fighters of the time, always went the distance and never really got hurt, even when he lost. Te saludo, manos de piedra!

Duran was feinting beautifully here. This is a master class in street fighting mixed with some VERY savvy and effective inside game. Duran at 29 here still had that mongoose split second timing that made him so effective. For this fight Duran was in SPARTAN condition against one of the best fighters this United States has produced in Ray Leonard. Duran is the ONLY man to defeat Leonard at his absolute prime. Duran when DISCIPLINED and focused, was truly a marvel of aggression, boxing , subtle defense, killer instinct and heavy, punishing hitting. A natural born, fearless fighter. His classic third fight with Estaban Dejesus was a clinic in disciplined agression and Counter punching. As he aged and moved up in weight, the speed was not quite the same and his punches though hurtful, did not ROCK the bigger fighters such as Hagler, Robbie Simms, Iran Barkley (though he did drop Barkley)and several others. What did remain constant was his fearlessness, heart and ring smarts accumulated over 80 something fights. I see this same fighting spirit in Manny Pacquiao today. Win,lose or draw ,real fighters with the street in them on many levels. Much respect to Hands of Stone, Manos de piedras!

Then in 1988 this stacked,green-eyed,drop-dead gorgeous lady named Julie C. at my high school in near southwest Detroit, was looking"lost"and distressed in front of the school, after classes dismissed, saying that her ride home hasn't shown up yet,and my buddy"Jam"who I rode home from school with agreed to drive her home. We pulled into her driveway and showing her total gratitude for the ride home widely smiled and said:"Thanks a lot guys; do you guys want to come on-IN and MEET my family?!?" We said:"SURE."then went in and was asked by her mom 1:04:11 were we hungry and then hungrily CONSUMED some delicious Cuban cuisine!! It was a great era for boxing. I was 21 in 1980 and had witnessed the heavyweight battles of the 70's which were epic. Now here comes the welterweight class with first-rate boxers like Sugar Ray and Roberto Duran. I had no way of knowing that it would end. UFC is ok but the art of boxing is somehow finer. @johnniea46846 жыл бұрын
Sorry man but your dad is wrong. Both fighters enter the ring with zero points and have to earn them when the bell rings. The Champion's advantage is (usually) in the negotiation for the match, so ring size, pay etc. At its best the purity of boxing is both guys go in there with no advantage and have to take care of business by themselves. I watched this live as a kid and was a big Leonard fan and I still felt he lost this. Both guys fought their regular style and Duran was just better on the night and deserved his great victory. I was still rooting for SRL in the rematch but the way he started with the over-the-top clowning and showboating actually turned me off, though he was winning the fight. Duran quitting in the 8th is still one of the great oddities of boxing history, because he was still in the fight and was in no trouble etc.

Duran was beatable, Leonard did not have the experience and confidence to go for it. Duran had incredible power and SRL respected it. He made Duran look terrible in the 2nd for a reason....SRL was a better boxer.

He was no match for Sugar Ray Leonard in the second fight. I am sure that Roberto Durans camp was in the need for $$, and they also promised a rematch immedately after the first fight (which was very very close, might I add...) Thus, the perfect storm. Sugar Ray Leonard was a superior boxer and did not really utilize his best abilities in the first fight. He was in better condition, younger, faster and just better. He was also a student of the game..Duran does not have humility Duran was not winning the rematch.

Sugar Ray has the biggest heart of any fighter of all time. The man never folded as many times as he was hit by heavy punchers he ALWAYS responded. True gift to the combat sport world!!

Leonard also got some decisions he did not deserve. Hearns got robbed against him and so did Hagler.
Duran , in his prime as a lightweight,,,was the greatest. Duran was so good he went up many weight classes,,,and STILL won titles. Yes , a Lion. He respected the sport and did not like clowns.

the single most forgotten aspect of the Four Kings era is that Roberto Duran was ALREADY considered the greatest LIGHTWEIGHT in the world by this time. so here you have already the greatest lightweight in history fighting 15 hard rounds with one of the no doubt greatest middleweights in history. not to mention his fights with Hagler and Hearns. regardless, Duran is my guy.

In my lifetime, the 2 fights most heavily promoted that actually lived up to the hype were Ali-Frazier 1 and Leonard-Duran 1. The fighters gave the fans a real show, epic wars, both times. From the time that Ray won the gold medal, everyone looked forward to him eventually meeting up with Duran, who was the top fighter pound-for-pound in the world at the time. It took 4 years to happen, but it was worth the wait.
