The trick is range and rhythm manipulation. He plays with the range with his positioning, he goes into boxing range but doesnt throw anything, then the next time he goes back into that range he brings a different rhythm so you can't time a counter because you don't know if Ray is going to counter you or do nothing and wait to for you to go first so he can counter.

The only trick is that he's a kickboxing legend and one of the k1 goats. Don't over analyse, things happen by instinct and experience.
