I’m 57 and every time I hear this song(FAVORITE by Sugarhill Gang)my mind instantly goes back to Christmas 1980. I was 14 with my sister/aunt and friend Vernell. After a visit with my grandmother we were headed back to DC on the bus with a boombox I got from my grandma for Christmas………. Let’s just say this song came on and we were the ONLY THREE on that LONG ride since it was just 1 bus that ran every TWO hours so basically a “round trip” and we got on it cuz we were soooo COLD. My sister/aunt and I were dancing up and down the aisle to this having a BALL 🎉🥳💃🏽💃🏽and the bus driver let us while he laughed and just drove that A12…the GOOD OLE DAYS that I MISS so bad. On this day in 1981 {May 16th} the Sugarhill Gang performed "8th Wonder" on the nationally syndicated television program, 'Soul Train'... Ten weeks earlier it had peaked at #15 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart... Between 1979 and 1983 the New Jersey group had seven records on the Hot Soul Singles chart, one made the Top 10, "Rapper's Delight", it peaked at #4 {for 2 weeks} on November 25th, 1979... Besides the above two records, their five other charted records were "Apache" {#53 in 1981}, "Showdown"* {#49 in 1981}, "The Lover in You" {#55 in 1982}, "The Word Is Out" {#71 in 1983}, and "Kick It Live from 9 to 5" b/w "The Lover in You" {#50 in 1983}... R.I.P. Don Cornelius {1936 - 2012}... * The record label for "Showdown" read 'The Furious Five Meet The Sugarhill Gang'...

Now lemme say, this is when rap made sense. No lude content, no cussing. just straight-up good rap dance music that still lives on to this very day. But these young cats today, have no clue. They need to step back and listen to the creators and founders of Rap. That's right, it's the Sugarhill Gang, followed by Kurtis Blow. But this will never get old. Last night I was bumpin' this in my car to the gas station and these young cats came up and stopped and was bobbin' they heads and then asked, "who is that?" I said, "awww yeah, you like that huh?" "This The Sugarhill gang." And immediately dude was lookin' it up on his phone. Simply sayin', "this will neva get old!" Holla... I'll holla.....!
