This was very difficult for her to film. Her bandmate (the guitarist) actually tried to stop it a few times. She was in the middle of a divorce. Her husband cheated on her. Despite that she was singing from the viewpoint of the mistress. I can only imagine how torn she must have felt throughout the entire shoot.

@@kyeanletofsky1996 Bush recalls, “Immediately, I was just like, ’Everybody stop. Stop this! Y’all leave the room. Y’all made her cry.’ I was like a knuckle-draggin’ dad or a husband or something. I was really freaked out.” He went to console Nettles, who had stepped out of the room, and offered to send everyone home, saying they could continue taping the following day. But Nettles assured him she was fine and continued to cry during the next three takes, making it hard for Bush to watch. “About that time, I’m spent,” he said. “It’s not even noon and I’m emotionally drained. They had to tie me down to watch all of this happen. It was like watching someone torture your friend.” Interview 12/28/2007. But I guess I may have misinterpreted it.

Quite a few country music songs do that where a phrase or a term initially means one thing but is then turned around so that the same phrase or term means something else. Don't Take The Girl by Tim McGraw being one and There Goes My Life by Kenny Chesney is another.

Lots of stories around this song and video, many of them sort of right but mostly wrong. The song is a reply to Reba Mcintyre's Whoever's in New England written from the perspective of the woman in New England. It was written before Jennifer Nettles' marriage broke up, but the video was shot around the time that that was going on. Sugarland has never said her marital troubles added to the emotion of the video but for whatever reason on the day they were shooting the song connected with her on a very deep level. They didn't do many takes. She was being greatly affected by it (obviously) and Kristian Bush (The guy on guitar and the other half of Sugarland) was not happy to see her in that state. The director wanted to do more takes and Kristian basically told him to stuff it.

The guitarist tried many times to stop the filming and she insisted they go on. I know all of this is already stated in comments... but god.... the strength it took her to put this out there and film.... this song aside she is an amazing artist alone. Her live performances are just as amazing. I feel she is over looked way to much in this industry as it is. I don't know I'm rambling at this point I feel like.

Oh My GOD!!!!! IT'S NOT AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL She is NOT the "other woman" She is NOT the "wife" ITS JUST A SONG!!!! "STAY"...... " It's a gut-wrenching story-song about infidelity and betrayal, written from the POV of The Other Woman." (NOT AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL, Nettles insists.) Nettles: "When I was writing the song, it felt good, but I didn't really analyze it. However, when I was done with it, and I was sitting back and playing it back, I thought, OK, this has something. I thought it was really special. It had a wonderful moment of redemption and it was a twist on a classic story. It was fresh and new. Now, that wasn't the intent when I started writing it. The intent was, hey, I want to express another side rather than rehashing the same old thing, and see how that feels emotionally." "I feel very grateful that I have never had to be or ever chosen to be or accidentally found myself to be in the space of the other woman. But I think we can all relate to the concept of being in a place in our life that isn't the healthiest for us and having to make a hard decision that isn't easy, even if it's the best decision for us, and having to experience a loss that comes from making that healthy decision." "I think it's true to the human condition of understanding and loss, but also to the rawness and vulnerability of being fallible. We make mistakes that not only hurt ourselves, but hurt other people. We many times sell ourselves short, not only in relationships but throughout our own lives. Hopefully, we come around at some point and realize our own value. Being able to have that moment in the song where she comes around and says this is very very painful but I am worth more than this -- I think everybody has either experienced that moment or craved that moment." "This is such an emotional song. It's all about being able to hear those lyrics and being able to understand them so that you can get the impact of the whole song." "This is a crazy, emotional, dramatic song about a dramatic story in a person's life."

That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship are All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks. Man, I’d love for you to react to those songs!!! Thank you.

I think you missed the last chorus where she switches up the lyrics and tells him to stay with his wife instead of begging him to stay. Essentially she takes your advice, Dave.

Country is often sad and blue. The old joke is: what do you get when you play a country song backwards? You get your wife, trailer, dog, and job back.
