Great song! I’m 73, and your channel is a constant reminder of how great music was back in the day. I think we all took it for granted because there were so many exceptionally talented musicians and a lot of innovation. Fortunately, so many timeless classics we can still hear to make up for the very uninspired music of today.

I'm 76 and when FM Radio came along we found out how cool these longer songs were. AM chopped the sht out of many songs. I consider m'self lucky to have grown up with music from Buddy Holley till the music really died with Hip-Hop. What a musical ride.

That's right! Many great tunes always had a "radio edit" version which was cut down to under 3 minutes so it would "play better" on mainstream radio stations.

I like it when people do these reactions and I get to watch someone else discover the charm of the songs I grew up listening to. I also enjoy listening to the music from the time when the musicians were just discovering techniques that are taken for granted now. It is a great point in my day when you have new stuff to listen to. Thanks!

I'm so glad you got the actual album track, that way you get to see it as the masterpiece that it is. Don't Call Us, We'll Call You is a really fun one, with multiple humorous references to The Beatles.

The name Sugarloaf is a mountain west of Boulder CO, which was where the band was from. I think they may have recorded at Caribou Ranch, a famous recording studio set up by Bob Gerchio near Nederland CO, also in the mountains west of Boulder. Chicago recorded 2 or 3 albums at Caribou.

Sugarloaf was a 70's band with a couple of hit songs, this one and "Don't Call Us (We'll Call You)". Excellent instrumentals and vocals on all songs, and I don't even know any of the members names. They were on The Midnight Special and did the "Don't Call Us" song, with a real touchtone phone, a big deal back in the day. No cellular devices at the time. "The Dark Ages" LOL.

Seen Sugar Loaf and the Guess Who, or maybe it was Sugar Loaf and Gypsy in St. Paul, MN. I can't remember the details. It was 1971/2 and I don't remember much from those years (if you know what I mean) until I joined the Navy in 1972, when my life straightened out some-blessing to my Navy/Marine Corps brothers and sisters on Veteran's Day (I was a Corpsman, ie medic). I just remember walking close to the stage and hearing this song. I've always loved the jazz/rock fusion bands. Thanks for the memories, sort of, lol.

Hey there! I remember listening to the Gypsy album along with all my older brothers collection every time he left the house. Just rediscovered Gypsy recently and that 1970 album cover was burned into my brain. My brother was in the Army and part of his tour was guarding a Nike Hercules missile site in Germany. Dad was in a military police unit in the European theater during WW2. Thank you so much for serving as a medic!

The next "Sugarloaf" song, and probably their last hit, is called "Don't call us, we'll call you." It's sort of a spoof on the Rock Band's journey to making it. Very good. They make a reference to the Beatles in the lyrics, "Some cats named John, Paul, and George..."

Hey brother, I'm so glad you found your way to Sugarloaf. That is Jerry Corbetta on the keyboards, he is such a great keyboardist. You might remember you did a reaction to "Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons" well Corbetta joined Frankie Valli in the early 80's as their singer and musical director. He toured with them for nearly five years. And the drummer that's killing it on the drums is Bob MacVittie and the guitarist Bob Webber after the band Sugarloaf split-up Webber went on to become an aerospace engineer and MacVittie became a restaurant manager in Arkansas. The band only had a few great songs...but Boy! what great songs they are and are always to be included on anyone's rock journey. (IMHO) Here's their next big hit to give a listen, if interested. "Sugarloaf - Don't Call Us, We'll Call You - 1974" (channel: Pegazusmart) Glad to see you're feeling better, brother. I hope your ear is okay. Enjoyed rocking with you. peace out~

They were THE local (Denver / Boulder) band that made good. One of my favorite songs of the 70s. Saw them live a few months after this song was released at an outdoor college stadium concert opening for Deep Purple. Perfect opening act, very similar organ, guitar and vocals with top notch rhythm. And you just informed me that Corbetta (who I met twice) passed on my 63rd birthday. Dam.

Really glad that you got to this one, and that you enjoyed it as much as I thought you would. So far you've reacted to 3 (this, Jackson Browne's Runnin' on Empty, & Don McLean's American Pie) of the 5 songs I suggested, though I think they've been paid/requested by others too, and I'm happy to see that you've loved all 3 of them. That leaves just the butt-kickin' Mississippi Queen by Mountain, and the warm and fuzzy What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong from my list of 5, I think you'll love those 2 as well, when you get to them. They're both very short songs, but worth reacting to...essential parts of the American music experience, in my opinion.

Played this tune in a local band way back when. I agree with your take on 'everyone just doing his part' in this tune. That's how this song has to be played...it is WAY more complicated than one might think. I played drums in the band; this tune was particularly difficult for me as I would want to follow the melody rather than the beat, of which a lot was 'syncopated'. I almost had to tune out the music and just pay attention to what I was doing. Anyway, I loved your reaction man...keep it up.

I saw someone already mentioned but there is a Sugarloaf canyon off of Boulder canyon that is likely what they were named for. I also agree with another on hitting some BHTM for some great music from Colorado from the 80's (Todd being one of my favorite guitarist / songwriters) but the ultimate would be Tommy Bolin from the 70's and yes he was called the ultimate and for good reason, died young but most musicians and his fans will all tell you that he would have been a household name along with Hendrix, Clapton, & Jeff Beck if he had lived a little longer. In his short life after he arrived in Denver by bus from Sioux City at the age of 16 he went from playing with Zephyr (my favorite Boulder band) to his own jazz fusion band Energy to James Gang recommended by Joe Walsh their previous guitarist who had moved to Boulder and purportedly said "this kid can play rings around me" to replacing Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple and then dropping two solo albums before he died at 25. A good portion of the music from all of that written by him. Here is my favorite song from his last album released shortly before he died kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2ipgId4mceDhJo.

Yess...one of the great one-hit wonders. The album version never got airplay, just a shortened version without the middle solos. Thanks for doing this one. FYI, their original name was "Chocolate Hair", but the label nixed it due to perceived racial connotation. They renamed themselves "Sugarloaf" after a Colorado mountain where one of the bandmembers had a cabin. Many of us watching this know how many great tracks were truncated for radio play (examples like "Light My Fire, "Nights In White Satin", "Do You Feel Like We Do"). Just for kicks, here's one of my favorites (I'm sure many have never heard the full version) - "Love Is Like Oxygen" by The Sweet: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mWm4aHqAar-leNk

I've heard some here at there growing up, but didn't really have family that raised me with this music. When I started this channel I knew that if I wanted to hear music for the first time, I needed to dig into a different era than my own. Naturally I gravetated towards the 60s / 70s knowing the little that I have heard from this time, I liked. It was the right call. So much of this music speaks to me and makes me feel great, and blows my mind a lot of the time with the level of skill the artists from these times had
