Sugarloaf Mountain Trail Guide - Big Bear

I hiked this trail with two friends on 6-24-24. The trailhead is quite overgrown and muddy. We initially missed the turn because the willows are hanging so low at the opening, we didn’t realize this was the trail. When you bend to look under the willows and up the trail, there are branches in the mud and we assumed they were markers not to go that way. The gate in your photo is also a bit more overgrown. All of these things contributed to our confusion. Once on the trail, we had no problems.

Just hiked this trail yesterday...cool to see the exact items along the way. Those rocky sections along the false peaks that looked like pink hymilaya salt were a pain to hike on. The rocks are not big enough to sit staple as you walk on them but big enough to trip you up. My ankles and feet were going in all directions. Started the hike at 2 pm...Made it to the top by 6 pm...got back to the car by 10 pm. Night hiking was fun...got to see toads and a snake along the watery sections.

I remember trying to beat the summer monsoon storms when I did the hike! Sunny and clear at 7am, puffy clouds 2 hours later! Reaching the summit of Sugarloaf is where I got rained and hailed on multiple times, and more-so on the return! Suffice it to say I didn't beat the storms!! Awesome day! Sugarloaf is one of my favorite summitted peaks to this day!

I live in Barcelona, some thousand miles away, but I think that your videos are relaxing and nice to see. As a hiker, I love to see the different natural elements and also the ones we share (black pines -that's how we call them in Catalonia-, junipers...) Pure alpine beauty. Thanks for this vids!

Sugarloaf, lol I never knew that was why. Now I need to know why there are so many Iron mountains. I love all the historical facts in the videos, since I am a real history nerd. I always search for videos of hikes especially for where to park, and things to watch out for. Pretty area!

Watching your video, it appears that it's not too crazy/scary if one has fear of heights. Most of the trail looks pretty wide, which would help calm my nerves. It certainly does look beautiful up there.

Do you know of any historical information on the abandoned mines in this area that you mentioned in the video? Many years ago a ranger at the Big Bear Discovery Center told me they were uranium mines but he knew nothing more about them.
