Chie is the best character from the game. Sorely underrated for some reason, but out of everyone, she's the most earnest, honest, and upfront of the entire cast. Her problems aren't complex or world shattering. She isnt struggling with being transgender or gay in japan. She doesnt have a family legacy to maintain. She's a boyish girl who wants someone to call her pretty just once. And thats so incredibly normal and mundane it stands out in a universe with gods, robots, spirit bears, and talking cat cars.

@@TheGreatDanish It´s not repressed homosexuality, you didn´t get it. The problem with Naoto is not that she wants to be a man, is that she thinks women are not suited or treat equally in a lot of jobs (which is true) plus the idea of the "perfect detective" being a man. Sherlock, basically. If anything, what Naoto ended up wanting is to accept herself and start to make a wave within her own dream. Kanji is not gay. He started to think he was because neither girls wanted to be around him (due to him looking like a punk) and boys were also scared, but he have this whole "feminine" hobby that puts him in a situation where his sexuality is confronted. I've come to appreciate Chie design and character wise after hearing what Lead Game Artist Shigenori Soejima had to say about her: “The concept for Chie’s design was ‘a cute girl who could actually exist in real life.’. Trying to design a game character who seems like someone you could meet in real life meant I needed to pay close attention to her appearance. The hardest part was probably getting the right balance between her features like her creased double eyelids set over appealingly large eyes, and her slightly duck-like mouth. Another tricky balancing act was the shape of her head, as it couldn’t be too long or too round. Once I had the shape of her head the way I wanted it, I still had to figure out how to put her hair on it. I was so picky that I convinced myself that I needed to rework her design quite a few times. One of the things that defines Chie as a character is her love of cheap, retro things like pins and other accessories. In some ways, Chie was the turning point that defined the overall design flavor of the entire game. I wanted to exaggerate the fact that the story takes place in a rural town, and one of the best ways to do that is to have someone running around in a jersey jacket. Unfortunately, the colors of a school jersey just didn’t look very nice within the context of the game, so I had to think of something else. That’s when I decided to try taking a retro-style approach to Chie’s jersey. That was a real light bulb moment for me, when I realized that anytime I needed to put something ‘utterly lame’ in to bring out the rural vibe, I could add a retro flavor to it to make it cool and in sync with the game’s atmosphere. This is how Chie single-handedly set the design foundation for the rest of the game. For this reason, I think it’s quite fair to say that Chie Satonaka truly embodies the identity of ‘Persona 4’, which may be why the game’s theme color (yellow) looks so darn good on her.” “Chie pays an average amount of attention to her fashion, and she dyes her hair. In order to preserve a certain level of believability, all of the characters in 'Persona 4’ were given relatively natural hair colors that you would expect to see regularly in real life.” -Soejima, Persona 4: Official Design Works 2012

While not in the ultimax games, I always liked Shinji's battle animations. Out of battle he is slouched and always has his hands in his pockets, but in battle, he stands firm and confidant and you can see his full towering height (5'10 which is huge for a Japanese male). He also is terminally ill from medication which is factored in his animations. When he misses a melee attack, he'll drop to his knees, put his hand on his mouth and cough and stumble. All the other characters just fall or miss, but Shinji is different with his illness causing him to miss. He also wields heavy weapons, such as an axe and even a stop sign, which he shouldn't be carrying since he's sick, which shows his more stubborn side as he doesn't want to be perceived as weak. His sickness is even more noticeable in the dancing games. Shinji's dance is stiff and restricted and can't pull off moves like his teammates can. Poor guy even falls multiple times mid dance and struggles to catch his breath. What's great about these animations is his illness isn't discussed until later after he joins the party, which means you saw his animations already and suspected he wasn't all healthy. Also take note of his appearance. He wears a beanie and heavy peacoat. Because of his harsh personality, you'd think its just his style. But when you hear about his illness, its explained that his body temperature doesn't regulate and needs warm clothing on all the time. Persona 3 legit made a terminally ill character work in battle flawlessly

I always love when you can watch a character in action and realize that they're self-taught, like they cobbled together their fighting style based on some surface-level ideas they had, and they just happen to be talented enough or work hard enough to make such a style viable. Shinada from Yakuza 5 is like this as well, he just fights like a street punk with a slight lean on some of his moves looking like sports attacks, like his football tackle; but then he also has very specific tendencies that make it clear he learned how to do these things by watching pro wrestling matches on TV and trying to emulate it. In fact, a lot of the yakuza games do a good job of making it believable that someone without proper training could be as strong as they are in combat, where strong characters may not have the proper form or stance, but they have plenty of muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, the reaction speed to make reasonable decisions at light speed, and the ability to think on the fly and use their environment. An example I like to think of is the mountain and viper in game of thrones, the guy with the mastery of his form isn't necessarily the stronger fighter against a big dude with basic but well oiled fighting instincts and speed. In any real fight, there's no perfect bulletproof plan; if you eat a bad hit, you can get knocked flat in an instant. Just because the opponent is "less skilled" or less proper in their practice doesn't mean they aren't dangerous. All that being said, I don't know if I can attribute this level of intrinsic meaning to the animation of Arena. Arena and all the other P4 spinoffs and remake were made by a B team at Atlus with none of the core creative staff or writers the original had, and it really shows in some pretty stark contradictions in characterization, basic theming, and overall writing quality. I highly doubt anyone in charge on Arena was, like, aware of this symbolic idea in Persona 4 and decided to express it in this game in a subtle manner. They literally write her entire character into meat girl for that game. The original already expressed that one's physical power is related to their heart and persona through the use of stats which are directly correlated with the persona, not the actual human, and because even if a human has weapons, they are physically incapable of fighting shadows until they get a persona, meaning it was always the persona's power that let them fight through whatever means they chose.

Pointing out how Tomoe actually launches Chie for her Dragon Kick and how that literally turns her fake kung fu into something threatening via the power of Persona is a great way to get the ideas across.

One of my favorite interactions in all of fighting games comes from Blazblue Cross Tag Battle where Azrael meets Chie, sees her throwing out wild un-trained kung fu moves that still work and coming to the conclusion that this teenage tomboy from rural japan is doing the same thing he is. Holding back and throwing out obvious attacks with poor form to make fights last longer and get more fun out of it. Azrael, the Mad Dog, The Canibal, the guy in Blazblue who's entire gimmick is being so physically strong he can toss magical gods around takes one look at Chie and thinks, "This girl gets it." Chie is disturbed by this, especially when hearing her fighting game exclusive title makes him double down on his read of her.

Theres a base for your idea about weaponry and combat in the Persona 4 being more about the belief and inner strength than literal firepower. In Persona 3 the guns they use to evoke their Persona aren't ACTUAL guns but the characters have to believe they are and believe in what they're doing when they press that barrel to their head and pull the trigger to summon their Persona. In 5 again the guns aren't ACTUAL guns because where the hell are you going to find real guns in JAPAN, they're airsoft, but they're convincing enough that the demons can see them and believe they are dangerous making them so. At least this is how I remember it. They never spend a lot of time on these points.
@mas87053 жыл бұрын
It really does make me wonder the kinds of interactions she would have with Akihiko if their interactions did expand out further than just Arena. You have someone who has basically devoted himself to the Art of Boxing (and protein). He chose the sport because, “I know what it’s like to be powerless,” and becomes so proficient, he can apparently dodge bullets (or in his case, he knows about avoiding being targeted. Can’t imagine why he would learn that, can you? /s). Part of me feels like that conversation (if expanded on) would seemingly go two ways. The first would be an embrace of following your passion. The other is to probably get that formal training so that the king fu would not only be what it should, but so that she can be even stronger for it. That and I wonder if our protein loving fighter would look at Chie’s Kung Fu and call it that. Within the setting of Persona 4 (and by extent, Arena), it is as genuine as Chie makes it. But in the real world, it would be interesting to see if he would still think that or not. Either way, the Persona fighting game was definitely a stroke of genius. Out of everything we’ve gotten from Persona 5, it is a bit of a shocker that we haven’t seen “Persona 5 Arena” yet (or even something as simple as “Joker Joins Blazblue Cross Tag!”).

I've seen sequel fics with them both ending up in the police force together, often with Makoto, Naoto, and Katsuya showing up, too.

For decades Personas bolster their users vitality and strength setting them apart from humans without them. Once a contract is formed, a Persona's affinities, weaknesses, and resistances are all inherited. Despite Chie's Kung Fu being 'fake' her Persona's attributes give her moves real power. However, one thing a Persona cannot give to their user (at least to my knowledge) is _technique._ The fact that Chie practiced and mimicked what she saw in movies is all on her. Her technique coupled with the enhancement from her Persona give her what she needs to hit like a truck.

Sure, she has absolutely no actual martial arts training, and is only copying moves she sees in the movies, but I've never seen somebody so willing to square up for literally anybody. Even perfect strangers should feel perfectly safe when they see that stylistic green jacket, almost like seeing Superman's cape. If she took actual martial arts classes, along with her dogged determination and willingness to throw down for her loved ones, she could legitimately be one of the most powerful martial artists in the world.

Sad no mention or even passing acknowledgement that Persona 2 exist with it's all adult cast and some odd weapon choices. I mean, one uses flowers and another uses coins.
@patrickrhyno45173 жыл бұрын
It's worth mentioning that "the Persona 4 heroes' weapons work because they correspond to how each of them defines strength" is a similar reason to why the Phantom Thieves' weapons work in Persona 5, but in reverse. In P5, the weapons on hand are highly-realistic model guns and rubber knives (and in one case, _literal_ children's toys) that are relatively harmless, but to an outsider they _look_ real and so the cognitive world of the Metaverse treats them like they are.
@aratabhist3 жыл бұрын
I mean the area inside of metaverse is the inner cognitive of a person making it their own reality so whatever they deem as realistic enough will become the real deal there. while the tv world is something a kin to a relfection world where the one that watch or enter it is the one that judge wether or not it is the truth making the character the one to choose. Works the same but pretty different i guess tv world and tartarus is kinda the same tho

As soon as I saw the title, I knew the contents. I never actually played Persona 4, but played a lot of the fighting games. Chie was my favourite character, and the animation was part of it. Great break down of it 👌🏼

This idea seems further expanded in P5, where all characters seem to wield glorified toys as weapons in the worlds of mementos and the palaces... The bullets and blades are purely an expression of their own willpower and rebellion... SYMBOLISM!!!

There are a lot of issues I have with Chie's character outside of her SLs and combat, but as someone who also grew up on Bruce Lee movies and the like, I absolutely love her combat motif, and ever since getting Arena Ultimax I've really enjoyed playing as her (although Yukiko is still my preferred playstyle). I think you absolutely hit the nail on the head regarding how Arena handles how each character works and WHY it works.

it's nice how you actually have gameplay from a lot of fighting games hardly anyone would know of. blade arcus doesnt even have a mizuumi, and there was one or 2 i didnt recognize. in actuality. kung fu literally just translates into hard work, and just is an umbrella term for martial arts in chinese. so you can easily say chie practice kung fu, in a literal sense. what ever she practices is definitely not less effective than a lot of modern wushu stuff from a realistic perspective. and either way galactic punt is impressive. i always thought of chie as the most impressive p4u character since she only needs to kick people, while everyone else need weapons

Another way to tell how Chie is visually not a trained fighter is comparing her idol stance to the other hand to hand fighters in Bbtag Akihiko and Akatsuki both use accurate boxing and karate stances respectively and are clearly very well trained Yang and Makoto both use more fictional stances, with Makoto particularly bouncing with energy, but they both have a clear amount of guard up Even Naoto Kurogane, who fights very wildly and seemingly also self taught, has a visible guard up and looks balanced on his feet But Chie has none of this and is instead just bouncing enthusiastically on the spot, because she's not thinking about having to guard and instead is just going with the flow

Chie is best girl in all of Persona. The animation in the fighting games is fantastic, and I even own the book describing their key frames as the designers give notes on how to inform the character's personality. Chie swings too hard and with poor form, so she keeps having to catch herself from falling over if you watch the full animations. It's great stuff. Now here the kicker, P4 Arena was my first experience with Persona as a whole, before going back and starting at the beginning, P3FES, at the suggestion of my friend who showed it to me. I picked Chie from her design and animations alone, and its fitting that she's rushdown. It's doubly amazing considering that when I actually got to P4G, Chie became my waifu, and that's after knowing everything about the character. The fact that P4 Arena's animations sold me on her character before I otherwise knew what she was about as a character is a testimate to how well they captured the essence of the cast of P4 as well as P3. Also, watching the menus of P4 Arena before playing the base games was so confusing I'll never forever it. Confusing in an intriguing way. "Okay, we're going into a TV, there's a guy with a long nose dealing out cards, there's a talking teddie bear, and also some of the older fighters are regularly shooting themselves in the head for some reason. Seems cool, and I *need* to know what's going on here." Lol great into to the series.
