It really annoys me that the give everyone guns instead of the tools the characters use as if they couldn’t figure out how to use captain boomerang and king shark without a gun.

Seems like a leftover before gutting some MTX/lootbox mechanics. Like they thought "Oh no, if King Shark doesn't have a gun, how will we get people to pay money for random gear?" But they removed the gear as part of the paid battle pass/loot system, and it's too late to change back. So that aspect of development remains in the game.

@@mrshmuga9 Nah, the reality is that it's much easier to make all of them similar at their core and possibly share loadouts, but change stuff like some traversal tools and skills/ultimates than have 4 completely different systems with no way to make progression consistent. (It was so annoying how in Avengers and Gotham Knights, you have to start your progression from scratch every time) Logically and production wise, it makes sense they went this way without even thinking about any kind of monetization.

Them all having guns isn’t horrible. They fact that they aren’t using their own unique character abilities alongside guns is an issue. Like say Boomer had boomerangs that he throw into enemies and when shot they explode. Stuff like that would make each character have a unique playstyle instead of “float around in air while shooting gun and maybe use an Ult here and there”.

Lots of people saying this is a game that WB wanted to make instead of Rocksteady, but keep in mind that 7-8 years ago, this game concept was the next hot thing and I can totally see Rocksteady wanting to do something like this. But one thing is for sure, there were a lot of issues during development, otherwise it would've taken like half of the dev time.

I don't get what's the point of having 4 character when they can all just float around and all just shoot guns. And all gear is just even more guns. Normal enemies just seem like brainless fodder and the rest is "shoot glowing weakspot". I have no idea how they can possibly make the bossfights interesting with that gameplay.

Have you not played any game? It's not a novel concept. Even Arkham Games were like this. It's like saying "Robin in Arkham Knight also hits and counters. What's the point?" The point is that they have the same base fundamentals, but different movement and abilities. Same applies to the rest of your comment. You can be reductive about the Arkham games just the same. Plenty of people complained it was just mashing X and just countering when the UI told you so.

@@Ayoul But Robin had unique gadgets Batman and the other characters didn’t. The core of their combat is the same, but they have different options. Every character here just has a different version of “jet pack upwards”, and a different look to their AOE Ults.

Why is that every things other than humanoid enemies have big purple circle weak points to shoot at? I understand if that's the only way to design big huge boss fight, but does tank need 3 weak points spot?

It's to add a little bit of depth to the shooting the same way a headshot in shooters does more damage. There's no clear head on a tank so they want you to move around it and shoot the right part instead of shooting it basically anywhere without any skill.

What they could've done was when you first fought it there would be no indication then after the mission you can access the main computer and look up its weaknesses in Waller's system. There are ways to add information about weakpoints without shoving it in our faces.

@@killersithlords But what was his take? The animations being good? What people see nowadays is they look through the cracks of a gameplay trailer to gauge what kind of game it’ll be. Because people have experience with live service. So they are now on the lookout for that because live service equals no cohesive campaign and lack of content on release (and probably down the line) You can tell by what they are showing. There are no story beats transitioning to gameplay, nothing like detective mode to break up the pace, no variety in locations, they dont show you how a story mission looks start to finish etc. All of these are signs it could be a barebones looter shooter like Skull and Bones. Again I dont know what Maximilian meant by his praise. Technically the game looks fine and the character design and artstyle is very well iterated upon. But all of that means fuck all if you’re just mindlessly shooting for big numbers to go up. That shit is boring.

The only reason people are disappointed is that they wanted it to be something else even though we've known for at least a year it was a shooter. @@mikev8746 We can at least laugh at their hubris when these games fail. Thinking they’ll automatically have an audience to try these alternate monetization tactics on. In most cases, they’re not wrong to assume an automatic install base, but there’s those rare occasions where everyone can see the ship on course to crash, except the ones who own it. Unfortunately, all the staff involved drown with the ship while the owners just sell off the wreckage and buy a new line of cruise liners. Hopefully enough of these fail to where they’ll stop doing them or at the very least, try them with smaller ideas and budgets instead like Knockout City. Especially when making new (worthwhile) content takes _way_ too long at the AAA level that’s necessary to support a live-service shooter. The base games are usually lacking as is and that’s _with_ years of development to work on it. It’ll take 6 months to add anything good and by that point the player base has moved on.

@@mrshmuga9 Yeah I cant say I dont feel enjoyment watching shit live service games fail. You just hope it translates to demotion and firing on the corporate ladder also. Its always the same shit as you said. A fucking long dev time because the devs were stuck trying to think up gameplay loops that are endlessly repeatable and fun (these dont exist beyond mp games). Instead of crafting a cohesive story gamepaign. Which ironically takes less dev time than whatever live service testing chamber they have to spin up for 4-5 years straight until they just say “okay fuck it nothing worked, we have no more time we need a game now within 2-3 years” and so it ends up barebones with a lack of content. And as you said producing AAA content takes longer than what a live service needs to stay alive and engagable. I seriously am curious to hear the fallout story off this games development when its all said and done and our suspicions turned out correct.

@@mikev8746 There were rumours at one point they were working on a Superman game. I guess that wasn't going well and betting corporate told them to make this to make the money back. Even though it obviously won't. Should've just made a different "easier" hero to make like Green Lantern or Aquaman or something. Just call the health "stamina" or some crap. I would've loved a Flash game, but I realize it's not as simple.

There's a really fun core idea in there with the focus on mobility and movement mechanics that sort of mix comic book abilities in with the typical shooter stuff. Zipping around the map looks kinda fun. But everything surrounding it just feels weirdly sterile, which is odd because the premise at its core is a pretty fun idea. Also, I know Metropolis isn't Gotham so it's not quite a fair comparison, but I appreciate the art direction in the Arkham games more and more as time goes on. Almost every little nook and cranny brim with personality in a way that neither this nor Gotham Knights settings have from what I've seen.

I think it's little early to judge metropolis and exploration. All the trailers have focussed on the action and movement, but there's nothing that proves there's no exploration or the similar easter eggs and nods all across the map like the old Arkham games. The trailers in Arkham games also never showed any of that stuff.

It has been a while so I guess it makes sense, but I feel like people have collectively such a short memory when I see takes like this. Realistically, it's not even that different from what they used to do on Batman Arkham games. It wasn't a battle pass, but it was DLC, season passes, with cosmetics and new content. Sony getting Joker exclusively. Used copies not getting Catwoman. It didn't stop those games from being beloved.

Yup been pretty pessimistic on this for awhile, since the announcement was it being a 1-4 player 3rd person shooter is so not what the Arkham trilogy was but hey I get it you gotta change with the times. We still got the old games. I hope this hits for people and maybe a year or so after it’s been out and has dlc it’ll be worth it. Arkham asylum is still one of the best metroidvania style games I’ve ever played, love city and knight as well :/ feels bad

Shooting and UI reminds me of the Division. I thought I had seen bits of Sunset Overdrive in it, but nope. I love Arkham games because they pushed me a bit more into the comics and DC movies. Every single villain and every single puzzle in these games gave me a bit of lore about characters of Batman-verse. Gotham, City and Assylum looked and felt great. I am really interested in this Metropolis, but somehow it still really looks clean even though it is taken by Brainiac. What bothers me even more are those purple tumors on everything. Why do tanks and helicopters have to show tumors in 2023 is beyond me? To tell you the truth, I am not hyped. I might even be disappointed.

To call this an Arkham game is completely intellectually dishonest on their part. The genres, themes, and tone in Arkham games are nothing like what is presented here. Framing Justice League content as if it is Batman content is like trying to frame Dragonball Z as a Silent Hill experience. We have reached power level 30 million and there's a new bigger bad guy out to destroy the universe! But also you are JAMES from Silent Hill 2! Yikes. Stick to the dark seedy undercity of Batman and the psychology of it's characters. The mechanics here are so clearly bare bones, so clearly made to emphasize the paid content as the interesting part of the game, that there is nothing but a shell. You know why the shark can't focus on melee? You can't monetize it. You can't sell shark arms. You can sell outfits and guns. It's a glorified crane game where as long as you pay enough you are guaranteed to get something shiny. Everything else is window dressing, meant to placate you until your next purchase. A shameful, artistically bereft product - tarnishing a reputation built over the last decade. There are near infinite games to play, no way in hell should anyone ever touch this. Whatever exec pulled strings on this should be blacklisted.

honestly, even marvels avengers looks more fun to play than this, but thats prob because im not a fan of playing multiple superheroes the same exact way, 3rd person shooter style. the city also feels dead, ai's are bots, enemy variety looks like a joke, and the worst part is that it looks like there is no effort put in towards making the city be destructable. Like at 4:14 king shark does a cannon dive from a decent height and 0 cracks in the ground or destruction around him lmao.

@@Ayoul at multiple parts there is no cracks on the ground, and if so it is so minimal for an attack like that from a height that high and as a brute hulk like physique on a NEXT GEN title. for example, go take a look at spiderman ps4's superhero landing and compare the two. one is an animation and the other is an attack. I did play avengers, got it when it was on sale, which i would not even get this game on sale. you werent doing the same thing with every single hero in avengers, with hulk u use your fists, with iron man you use your blasters and can do melee, with thor you can use your hammer as a projectile or as melee. what do we have here in suicide squad? boomerang, uses guns, even though he has a boomerang. deadshot? he uses guns, not complaining there, it makes sense for him. harley quinn? uses guns. king shark? uses guns even though he should be using his teeth and hands as melee. it all looks the exact same, so boring lmao. but hey, go ahead and spend 70 dollars on a next gen title that looks worse than last gen games like god of war, spiderman, ghost of tsushima. not my screen or resolution bud, i took a screenshot for you. cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1052133056229675008/1079656555609337896/image.png

This might be fine, I just wish they were at least still also developing games like Arkham Knight. The worst feeling watching these trailers is just that I know this team has made games that I enjoy considerably more than this.

Honestly, I think Avengers will probably be more fun. The heroes (except the post-launch copycats) felt distinct. The lack of enemies and bosses is what hurt it. Here, all the heroes look too similar in playstyle.

@@mrshmuga9 Avengers felt awful to play and pretty brainless. This looks actually fun to move around. Even moving feels bad in Avengers. Flying as Iron Man is super slow for some reason.

8 years... 8 years waiting, for this!! It almost feels like an insult to Arkham fans. Almost every single thing we liked about the Arkham trilogy (combat, gadgets, metroidvania elements, exploration, and varied gameplay) is completely gone from this game
