How many great singleplayer studios are going to have to utterly destroy their track record until the industry learns this lesson?

Imagine if they just made a Justice League game and in-story, Brainiac manages to inhibit the team from using their full strength, so Superman, Wonder Woman, and Lantern, (AND HAWKGIRL WHERE IS HAWKGIRL) can still fly but only for a limited time. They can use most of their powers, but with far less force to scale the game more realistically. That's not too much of a stretch. They all have long range attacks and melee combat capability, so the gameplay wouldn't need too much of a tweak, but the powersets would be distinct (and established) enough to offer real variety (Superman uses heat vision, ice breath, throw stuff attacks, Lantern has a few FFXVI esque Eikon projections, Wonder Woman uses lasso whip attacks plus a heavy reliance on deflection/parrying until she can close the distance with enemies). Infamous & Prototype showed 2 gens ago this can be done and be enormous fun. You could have Batman be the team member in their earpieces in the Oracle role, and spend time building out his relationship with each hero. I guess Flash's sections would have to be carefully managed set-pieces, maybe with a mix of high speed checkpoint challenges, fetch quests, rescue against the clock challenges, and maybe some quick-time/deadeye-esque button prompts. Then, finally, you could have had a wonderful section where you finally play as Batman one last time, in a dedicated siege and stealth portion of the game, and get to experience one last hurrah and yeah, maybe Batman doesn't make it, but he goes out in a blaze of glory, enough to give Superman and the others their powers back and the final portion of the game is a big stinking destruction fest of boss battles against Brainiac? The end of the game could have been a memorial service for the fallen Batman, and have each surviving member of the team eulogising him and, I don't know, with all the delays it feels like something that could have been slotted in as a final tribute to Kevin Conroy and give players and fans a sense of closure, almost an opportunity to pay respects. I mean... who would want that?

I wonder if they were working on a Justice League game before they got told they're getting Suicide Squad so they had a layout for a very vertical game so they needed to somehow make it useable for street level characters. Pretty sure parts of Gotham Knights was left over from WB Montreal's Suicide Squad game as well. Whenever a game gets canceled, they'll reuse what they can if they can. Saves a lot of time and money.

I think they should've focused on the characters themselves Let Harley use the bat and the revolver with a mix of traps Boomerang is kinda on point in just using the boomerangs in game and explosives Deadshot should just have all the guns. Rifles, his wrist guns, snipers, etc Shark should have been pure melee brawler. Just mauling and devastating enemies. That way each used didn't kits and weapons without all having them use guns. Also not a looter shooter but something else.

Something fans need to know is that the Rocksteady they knew back in the late 2000s to mid 2010s is not the same Rocksteady that exists today. People have left that were important to the Arkham series, and that's greatly affected how it's being used.

I man name Miyazaki broke it down to the fact that the older generation wasnt swarmed by media they disnt have Batmans, Spidermans, or Gokus. They grew up raw and base work on life and interactions with real people. The younger generation grew up swarmed with media instead of going on an adventure themselves they lock themselves away cut away from others. These people seek work in the industry however they seek to emmulate the stories they grew up with unappealing characters because since they didnt grow up interacting with everyone they dont truly understand people and thus cannot create beleivable characters in their own stories.

Very true I had a lot of fun playing that game even though it was kind of forgettable…the story was really entertaining the humor was awesome and the mechanics were fun enough. I feel like this game should’ve focused on having that engaging of a story..ditched the online competitive pay system and loot and that crap and just had maybe four person playable campaign. Each character should’ve felt very different. Dead shot should’ve been the only one with a gun. And each character should’ve just had their own talent tree to mess with and make each one of them broken in their own ways. This shouldn’t have been open world. Just like guardians you just need cool level design with funny dialogue. Idk when game companies will realize that open world games with empty environments isn’t a good model for most story driven games.

I think the game made the same fundamental mistake the 1st movie did: they're trying to stick the suicide squad into a situation that is way out of their league. Now, I've only read a few of the comics, but I'm under the impression the squad is a black ops unit that does the US's dirty work, they're meant to carry out assassinations and like, destabilizing foreign countries (like in the 2nd, much better movie). So why is this group of Z-lister, barely superpowered villains tasked with fighting the justice league? It just... doesn't make much sense.

Well, I expect we'll be seeing fewer live service games as time wears on. They've just not been succeeding very often in recent years. The development and uptime costs are high for them, and they just can't get a foothold anymore. What we're seeing are the games that started their development around the height of the breakout successes like Overwatch and Fortnite, but trends change, especially those that depend on constant internet connections and, more to the point, especially if they constantly have their hands out demanding customer's money (doubly so if it's on top of an up-front cost just to play the game in the first place). This game at least only has cosmetic stuff, but it's still an irritation to many. Gamers are just getting a bid disillusioned with the idea of buying into games that will be unusable once the servers go down (and all to frequently, games only last a year or two before that happens).

Basically rocksteady sold their soul for the almighty buck, chose quantity over quality with generic gameplay mechanics and gear systems that every game uses these days. They chose money over originality and integrity. It’s not the end of the world it’s only a game but man is it disappointing

I haven't played this game yet. Don't know if I will. However I feel like a better way to handle this is you play as Batman, who everyone thinks is dead, coming back to the forefront to save the Justice League. Or as they said play as Wonder Woman and keep Batman dead.

I might be more interested in one of these live service games if a studio actually followed through with the promises behind it. This, Gotham Knights, and Avengers seem to be just a repeat of the same 4 missions over and over and the only additional content is skins or more of the same missions with a facelift. God forbid I buy a completed game the day it comes out.

Yeah I totally agree about their point to do with the weapons...just having guns really takes so much out of the interest and differences of characters..also makes not so much sense they could beat super heros with guns.. I mean fare enough they have different properties..but..come one!! Make it interesting and diverse and use the characters to do fun and crazy different attacks!! It's just full on lazy

I remember when Asylum released, people praised how it 'really makes you feel like Batman' through the combat, movement and cinematics all being in line with his character. Harley Quinn spidermaning up a building with a glowing minigun whilst shouting marvel quips. Hmm.

Everyone knew the gameplay would suck from the very first trailer. We were expecting that. What is outraging people is the story that we thought could be good given the studio history and the Deadpool style vibe from the trailers. Not to mention the Kevin Conroy hype they pushed.

Variety would have been awesome. Imagine if Clayface was a playable character. His hands turn into weapons to attack the enemies. His arms and/or legs extend to reach different buildings. That would have been awesome

Personally when I first saw it I didn't bat an eye to the gameplay but together with the live service component made my decision not to buy it all the easier and quicker, games like Avengers and Gotham Knights I got for free and at a giant discount respectively.
