It's from no game no life, but one of the meanest disses I've ever heard was "Shut up Steph! You're just a Steph!", like they turned her name into an insult. What really sold it though was the "just" part of it

Japanese here. For those interested in Japanese: the word "inkya" carries a slightly different connotation than just "introvert." It often means something like "a socially awkward person" and is almost always used negatively. Imagine the emotional damage our shy onion maid had when Chad Suichan just straight up said "You're just socially awkward right?"

As an ESL, I don't understand what tone the word "just" conveys. Can someone explain?.
@zerospicon
@zerospicon 2 жыл бұрын
If I understand correctly, "just" simplify things to the most basic understanding. The Japanese phrase translated here was "futsu ni", which means: usually, generally, ordinarily, naturally. This mean that there is nothing else special or interesting to describe. No other description is needed and the conversation ends. "Aqua is an introvert." You can keep adding things to describe how Aqua is an introvert, what characteristic she shows, and so on. "Aqua is just an introvert." Nothing else to say from that, nothing special. End of story. When used as compliment, like when you say: "Towa is good at Apex." You make the listener think about how she is good. You can add details where she is good at, but when you do, any missing part you do not describe is not added to the compliment. "Towa is just good at Apex." She is good at Apex and there is nothing to take away, nothing to criticize at. BONUS lesson: "just" in other usage... "Just" also means: "the only thing", so use carefully with context and tone. Here are some examples: "My son is very bad at learning. He is just good at math." (implies math is the only thing my son is good at) "My son got the top score for the math test. He is just good at math." (implies that my son is simply good at math, it is natural for him, he usually gets the top score and it is nothing out of the ordinary) I am now lazy too explain any more. Good luck, hope I helped.

@@zerospicon I feel that the word 'just' here doesn't really capture the original nuance of "futsuu ni" though. To me, when you say "futsuu ni oishii", it means that it's delicious in a way that's objective, not because of some gimmick or because of one's bias. It also expresses an element of surprise. When used correctly, it actually has a very positive connotation. The joke is when they apply it to something like an introvert, where it starts to feel very strange. EDIT: not saying that I have any better suggestion than the word "just". It's just that I felt like your beautiful explanation is a bit out of place considering the original meaning. It's just one of those hard-to-translate things.
@Lucaz99
@Lucaz99 2 жыл бұрын
@@qsykip I might be overstepping here since English is only my 2nd language and I don’t speak Japanese but I think “just” can have many of the similar connotations of “futsu”. If you say “This is just delicious!” The implication isn’t that the food’s only characteristic is that it’s delicious. Depending on your tone, it can easily be interpreted that you think the food is surprisingly delicious or that it’s undeniably delicious; or both.
@qsykip
@qsykip 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lucaz99 That's probably true to some extent, even if I feel that the nuances are kind of different. Language is tough. I thought about it for a long time, and I really can't think of a better translation. I upvoted your previous comment by the way, because I thought it was great!

If you watch enough Anime, you will realize not following 1 to 1 is the norm for easier understanding. If you check Hololive official subs, they don‘t translate word to word either, just for the sake of a pun/joke/westernizing it.
