I lived a couple years in Kanagawa, and was in either Yokohama or Tokyo weekly. But while doing that I and was back and forth to the NYC area occasionally. At first I felt ashamed about how backwards our infrastructure was, how overpriced things were, how the subway was always running late, how there's just garbage on the sidewalk and stuff like. But when I visited NYC again after my longest stint in Japan, walked around some of the old places I used to spend time. The architecture, dynamicism, just the absurd number of languages you'll hear in a single day -and NOT from tourists, but New Yorkers themselves- is something Tokyo will perpetually be in the shadow of, as much as I love Tokyo. It's not for everyone and you won't notice it if you're looking at it through the eyes of a tour bus visitor. The fact Suisei was disappointed at the hyped up and felt like she was missing something shows she's pretty sharp. I've personally chosen to live in Japan after I finish my studies, but there's absolutely no comparison between NYC and any other city in the world. You may like it, you may not like it, but the basic tourist stuff is a gimmick and not representative. I do wish the MTA would get their freaking act together. And I will not comment on the NYPD for legal reasons 😂

The thing about Times Square being like Shibuya... Well Shibuya itself is a tourist attraction for non-Japanese people. So yeah, it isn't surprising that she found Times Square to be similar. They are both important squares in high rise cities that have become iconic. So you might not think much about them as a local but to non-locals it is an attraction (even if it perhaps becomes ordinary once you experience it). (For example, I live in Istanbul, a city were cross-continental travel is entirely normalized so the ony reason you think about it is because you might miss the ferry, or the ferries might be cancelled because of bad weather or the bridges and tunnel having the worst traffic in a city that is already overly full of traffic jams (there is the subway (well, technically considered commuter rail I think) tunnel under the Bosphorus as well, probably the least problematic way to get from Europe to Asia and vice versa, though least scenic alongside the car tunnel.)

As someone from a big city, I'm expecting to see the same non-pretty stuff any other big city has whenever I go to one, regardless if it's a developed country or not. Because of that I actually liked going to Paris regardless of all the negative stuff it's been said about it. I'm like "same shit, different country lol"

As a Japanese person, I feel sorry. For young people in Japan, McDonald's has been around since they were born, and it is a familiar restaurant that is so familiar that it is no exaggeration to say it tastes like "mother's cooking." So Sui-chan probably said "Japanese food" because she wanted to say "the taste I'm used to eating in Japan." I understand that it would offend Americans. Language is difficult.
@cameron90873 ай бұрын
Rather, it just made me laugh. In the first place, us Americans also don't think American McDonald's is very good, and we don't have a particular sense of pride over it, so if Japanese people call it "Japanese food" that's perfectly fine to us lol
@mqegg3 ай бұрын
@@kakitaro557 dont worry, mcdonalds is notorious for being better overseas. an american would never recommend mcdonalds
@@kakitaro557 By Japanese food she mean typical Japanese food, not McDonald's. It's natural to miss the food of your home country when you're abroad, and people all over the world feel the same way. This doesn't mean that the food in the place you're staying is not delicious, but it simply means that you want to eat food that you're used to. For example, rice is soul food for Japanese people, so if you eat only pizza and pasta in Italy, you will crave rice after a few days. That doesn't mean the local food in your destination isn't delicious. On the other hand, if an American were to spend several days in Japan eating only Japanese food, he or she would likely start to miss American pizza and hamburgers. It's not rude, it's natural

Suisei's a public figure in an idol company so she has to sugarcoat it a lot, but to be honest, a lot of American cities are just miserable to visit. New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, you name it. You gotta be used to all the smell of piss and drugs and a general dilapidated vibe that screams "we never recovered from 08". These accusations will prompt some people to indignantly type "b-but that's just how ALL cities are!". No. No they're not. Plenty of poorer countries have prettier, cleaner and safer cities. Plenty of smaller American towns are better to visit than the big cities. And don't even get me started on the realities of LIVING in one of those. Maybe Boston's alright.
