Even though I had most of my education in English (US and Canada), this is still my default reply when I get the "How are you?" It is so ingrained in me, despite knowing the more native reply is "How are you?" back. Damn Asian English class lessons. At this point, I would rather get "'sup" to me, since at least I'll say "'sup" back 😂

@FeatherWait

The conversation Suisei is talking about probably happens while the students in the class are standing up as the teacher enters the classroom. At the beginning of classes in Japanese schools, the students stand, bow, and then sit down. In other Japanese-taught classes, a student would order the rest of the class through these actions - they'd say, "chakuseki" for sit down. But English doesn't really have a word with the same nuance as "chakuseki"...and "take your seat" is a bit advanced because the word "take" has many other uses. So they end up saying, "sit down", which sounds a bit strict to us.
@gurigura4457
@gurigura4457 Жыл бұрын
If you got the intonation right it'd sound fine; But I think that most of Suisei's pronunciation is quite flat, so it's harder to read intention into it.
@RetroGamer99999
@RetroGamer99999 Жыл бұрын
It can be weird sometimes if you translate English directly to Japanese. That's why Suisei said "座れ" in this rough tone because if you translate "sit down" directly it does sound pretty aggressive. Same thing with the Japanese "huh?". In English it just means "what did you say? I didn't catch that" but in Japanese it is more like "what did you just said to me you little shit?!"
@inoscopedbarney
@inoscopedbarney Жыл бұрын
@@RetroGamer99999 Tbf, the meaning of "Huh?" is dependent on how it's said in English. Sometimes they didn't hear the words, sometimes they're confused by it, and sometimes they're pissed off by it.
@RetroGamer99999
@RetroGamer99999 Жыл бұрын
@@inoscopedbarney yeah that's true. But in Japan saying "huh?" is mostly used when you are pissed because it indicates some kind of outrage. You can say it in certain situations but you should never say it to persons (except when they are close with you and know that you just want to tease them)

I'm not sure "squeak" is onomatopoeia. It's just the word for the sound, not the sound itself. Like "bark" isn't supposed to be the sound a dog makes, just the word for that sound or action. We don't use onomatopoeia very much in English; at least not nearly as common as it is in Japanese, in which they make sounds for things that don't even have sound, like textures.

It can't be helped. Unfortunately learning a language is not like learning how to ride a bicycle. You have to constantly practice it and read and listen to it every day. When I went to school I didn't learn shit from English lessons, so I started watching movies in Englisch, read stuff online in English and played games in English. That's how I truly developed my current language skills. I do the same thing with Japanese, I'm still pretty bad at talking but at least I can understand and read basic stuff and I also had some simple conversations with some Japanese persons

@@RetroGamer99999 The reason why I said that is because many people keep saying that Suisei is fluent in English. But she is clearly not. Not even near Subaru, Lui, Choco-sensei, AZKi or A-chan’s level of English who are all Commutable in English.

Still great to see them trying at least, it's comendable.

@@quartzninja Same with me for French, to be honest. I took it as an optional class because I was just good with learning languages I guess, but over the years I just never used it all that much. So much of what I've learned was forgotten except maybe the very basics. And yeah, learning a language by the book and actually using it in every-day life are certainly different things.
