It's mind boggling that someone can learn 2.5 hours of super complex music by memory and sit there on a stage with an audience and cameras and recording equipment and play it flawlessly. Super human!

Interestingly, I have already memorized and can play without score the whole first suite and the first two movements of the second. And I have eight months of practice only. It actually comes faster than you’d think. Now playing with that sound snd intonation is a whole different story ! But my point is musical memory can be trained and used rather easily imo

When (and if) AI ends up arriving at the generation of such a tour de force (called the "suite") in terms of composition, musicality, sensibility, dexterity and artistry, we will know for a fact that we are done as a species. I sincerely hope it will never happen. This is so sublimely human. Thank you to JSB and to maestro Coppey!

In about 1700, the 'cello was a very new instrument, and nobody quite knew what to do with it --- they didn't know how to tune (5th suite) or how many strings it should have (6th suite). But JSB came along and said, "let me show you how it's done." People will be playing the Suites in a thousand years.

I'm 70 and started with the violin at 6. This man is like "explaining" Bach to me, and of course there's so much left for me to learn! I wish I could attend one of his concerts and communiate.

@@knittingnirvana Good buddy! This version is very soul soothing and I like it the best among all the Suite versions from different cellists. I would recommend Hauser's performances as well (better with Oliver Dragojevic).

It is indeed gorgeous, Ruohao! By the way, I kindly recommend the appreciation of the work of a living classical composer dedicated mostly to sacred music: W. Ferdinand. I feel myself like a sort of non-official ambassador for his music - and, effectively, also one of his few supporters. He is very, very talented. You won't be disappointed. kzbin.info

I have listened through this magnificent performance dozens of times. I simply have not heard these beautiful suites rendered with such emotion, skill and fluidity. The filmography, venue and recording are wonderful. KZbin and google recommends these performed by others and I often stop mid-performance to come back here because here I feel transported and entranced with Mr. Coppey's music.

Only listened to the final suite so far. Serene and meditative - with individuality and humanity. Purity of spirit - with physical substance and common sense. It's rare an interpretation makes me fully forget Casals, but this does! Will be diving into the other five suites, post-haste!

Just out of simple respect for the complete dedication, focus and devotion required to master this entire set of timeless suites, a really educated human would never hit that dislike button. And I keep coming to this amazing Arte upload . I need his unique Bach cello Suites to live through these unsettled days…
