matrix in the for of (1+ ax) are special matrix there are really easy short methods for calculating the determinants, you can find a ton of videos on youtube.

Not helpful answering now I guess but anyway the reason is cuz while swapping the 2 columns of a matrix....a negative sign is to be taken outside. It's the 'rule'

in 1/number what is 1 at the numerator? because when I solve a matrix in which the first element is not 1, I get wrong answer..

Do we add the negative sign because we swapped the first column with second column? or would it have been the same if we had swapped first column with any third column that was non-zero? In other words, can we swap first column with any column that is non zero and then put a negative to it ?

The 'two' is order of smaller matrix to which you've broken it, since you've broken to smaller matrix of order 2x2. Hope you understood!

akash sonekar if there is no nonzero element to interchange with the zero element, then that means that you have at least one row of all zeros, therefore producing a determinant of zero

his answer is wrong co'z a33 is -3 and not 3....so the answer should not be one..

i was wrong at the answer...one is correct but he has also wrong at a33 because it is not 3 but -3...
