When I visited the eastern part of Sulawesi, Indonesia, I was shocked to see the landscapes......Forests seen from the sea were stripped, exposing red soil and huge barges filled the sea. Indonesia is a major producer of nickel, which is indispensable as a cathode material of lithium-ion batteries of "environmentally friendly" Electric Vehicles(EV). To decarbonize and develop domestic industry, Indonesia is trying to complete the entire nickel mining process, smelting, and manufacturing of batteries and EVs in the country. However, I heard that some nickel smelters are building coal-fired power plants to supply the electricity needed for their operations. What a fact!

地球に優しいと言われる電気自動車を動かすリチウムイオン電池。その正極材に使われるニッケルの生産量を誇るインドネシアは、脱炭素化と国内産業の発展のため、ニッケルの採掘、製錬、電池とE V自動車製造まで一貫して国内で完結させようとしています。しかし、一部のニッケル製錬所では、操業に必要な電力供給のため自社で石炭火力発電所を建造していると。大きな矛盾がありました。
