He had 6 banners out of 7 banners already. 1-Jannisary (The ellite foot soldiers. The SWAT unit of the empire) 2-Sipahi (Knights) 3-Levend (Sailors) 4-Akinji (The guards of the borders) 5-Rumelian Army 6-Anotolian Army And only one banner left he didn't have that only a Sultan could posses. 7. Khalifate. You see he almost was equal to Sultan. It was too late to fire him. There were no way but to terminate him.

Historically speaking: there was a LAW that stipulated that only one son/successor would ever survive (i.e. a sultan must not have brothers, uncles, etc.). The brothers (of sultan/winner heir) must be executed. And everyone who was there knew it, including the successors' mothers. In the Ottoman Empire there was "free succession". Any male member of the dynasty could become sultan - and there was absolutely no preference either. And even if one of the Sehzades would already be enthroned and titled Sultan, his living brothers are still a threat - because they still have a claim... and the Sultan's position can be challenged. BTW maybe a cruel law (only against members of the dynasty) and could be modified with a better succession system, but paradoxically the Ottoman Empire at that time worked best when it was in practice. Likewise, executing one's own sons may seem cruel (and probably is), but that doesn't mean it's unjust... The Sultan may not really enjoy executing his own son (it may actually cause him excruciating pain), BUT he MUST execute him, if his son was a traitor, then this imposes on him an obligation and a law that he cannot afford to bypass (all the more serious that the traitor is a successor/sehzade... he cannot be pardoned or his punishment reduced, that would be protection/nepotism, circumvention law and justice). In the series: Ibrahim would either be on Mustafa's side (and he would certainly get rid of everyone else) or - and this is also quite possible - on his own side, that he would even consider the throne for himself... his arrogance knew no bounds (until it exceed friendship, laws, loyalty,... to sultan and to the empire).

I think Suleyman mourns the loss of his friend, not his death. Even when Ibrahim was still alive he wasn't the same loyal servant who would give his life for his "brother". If he was he wouldn't have doubted the sultan's authority and see himself above him. He became selfish, arrogant and hungry for power. Since he changed he wouldn't have been the same person Sulteyman grew up with, alive or not. The same thing happened in Hatice's case. Since the moment he cheated on her the pure love that broke the rules and made their marriage possible died. Both of them still loved the old Ibrahim. Even if he cared about him, I think deep down Suleyman knows this sad truth.

You're wrong. Traitors are not mourned. They are forgotten about them. Suleiman was tormented by remorse. He knew that Ibrahim did not have the guilt for which he should have been killed. Ibrahim never cheated on his sultan. He loved him and until his last breath was loyal to him. Therefore, Suleiman cried because he realized who he had lost through his fault.

The only interferance Hurrem had in all of this is find the document and show it to the sultan. Ibrahim really was a traitor, he didn't respect the sultan's authority and saw himself above him. @@biancab8832 I have read a lot of sources and rely on them, and not on the series. What do you call betrayal? Did Ibrahim rebel? Maybe he sided with Suleiman's enemies? Maybe he give them any state secrets? There was nothing like that. And what he said about lions and trainers was a metaphor that had its own meaning, and was intended for ambassadors, it was a diplomatic move to psychologically pressure them. If this were not the case, Ibrahim would say it both in the family, and in the circle of friends, and everywhere. And the sultan knew about this and calmly reacted to it. After all, the main thing was the conclusion of the contract, and Ibrahim managed to achieve this.

While I think Suleiman would have mourned his one-time friend and companion, I don't believe for one minute Suleiman regretted executing him for the good of the Ottoman Dynasty. Ibrahim was a Grand Vizier who had grown arrogant, greedy, and the power was going to his head. He was making bad choices and many errors and going behind Suleiman's back. We also know IRL he was taking graft, bribes, and that was the reason for his vast wealth, which was far beyond his salaries and perks from Suleiman.

But Ibrahim didn't leave him much option. You can't openly tell foreign dignitaries that you are the real power. That the Sultan wasn't able to decide things, and Ibrahim had to tell him what to do. Suiliman can't let anyone undermine his position, especially to the enemy. That could easily cause major issues that result in Suiliman losing power and eventually the throne itself. Unfortunately Ibrahim's ego and recklessness had a heavy price. But is definitely haunted Suiliman. His last recorded word was Ibrahim.
