Do you use tip-ups at all anymore? Or have the STD's replaced them all together?

When it's super cold out I will use them. They are faster to set up in the cold on your hands but I prefer the tip down

Is there another reason besides it's more fun to catch on a rod to use a tip down vs a tip up?

They will also outfish any tip up or set line 2 or 3 to 1. And that's because the wind will move the bait around a bit and shake oil off a dead bait. If using live bait that minnow can swin down and the rod will tip with it a bit giving the minnow move room to move around. Set lines if they swim down they can't

Could you comment, please: You say below that they put fish set lines 2 or 3 to one. That’s huge. I imagine it’s because of the relatively resistance-free take. But then the fish pulls against the drag bc you can’t open the bail and it must feel it then? No? Also, the problem with drag vs open bail is line twist. Every turn of the spool, and that fish took many, creates a twist. Has line twist been a problem?

I use braided line, it doesn't get inexpensive twist. Also I use bait feeder reels, they have a different drag system.

330 MaNiaC always looking for new techniques. I ice fish in Michigan and lake saint clair is a Great Lake to fish for bass and pike but pike are more active than bass in the winter months.

Make these yourself and don’t waste your money. Easy to copy like any poorly marketed weekend -warrior turned ice fishing inventor puts together in the garage. No doubt this video is proof people will buy anything. I could just give you one mine for free that fits in your pocket and does the exact same thing but you already got that pile of plastic to enjoy😂.
