I left the UMC in October of 2023 after being a member for 52 years. I joined the Global Methodist Church in November and haven’t looked back. It was the best decision for me.

My heart is broken. Raised in this church and now have no home. As a youth leader, I’m struggling with the fact that we’re instilling biblical truths to our youth and now have a denomination that is in complete contradiction to these truths. The greater New Jersey conference made it so hard to leave that smaller churches could not afford disaffiliation. Pray for our small churches who now have the choice of (like you said) walking away from homes or disregard our convictions.

You have a home in Christ. There are many independent bible believing churches. Free yourself of the stereo types of "redneck" independent churches, see for yourself.

Thank you, especially for your prayer. I am one of those feeling trapped in the UMC after a long time of hearing from the pulpit that "the denomination is tearing itself apart, but we're going to be fine." We're not fine. We're conformed to the world, and it feels terrible. I am entering such an intense time of prayer now, as I have to decide about cutting ties with the congregation I've been part of for over 50 years. Maybe I'll join the young Methodists for tradition and be part of the reconquista.

Bless you!! I’m from Mississippi and our church went through a NASTY split. I’ve been so shocked to sit on the same pew as my best friends, assuming our beliefs were the same. I joined after being married for 7 years and attending different churches. We raised our children in this church, dedicated them to God and the congregation. Now the congregation doesn’t even want to be friends with us anymore. One of my friends said, “So apart from the gay stuff what’s the problem you have with the church?” WHAT!!!???!!! 😳 I just couldn’t even respond at that point. And you’re 100% spot on. We are NOT alright. I told my husband that I think I have PTSD from the war we’ve gone through. I’m exhausted. I’ve been struggling. Then I remember the scriptures that say, “Not all who call upon me Lord, Lord will I see in heaven.” I’m responsible for me so I left and lost my best friends. And I would do it all over again tomorrow and not change one thing. God be with you!

Our church left almost a year ago went non denominational. Our congregation felt it best. We never looked back and are so much happier. I had been. Methodist for 60 years

BEING Methodist is a state of the heart, not a single denomination waving the name in vain. I'm very sorry your church has chosen to spurn its heritage and no longer consider itself Methodist. All a church needed to do was remove the "United" and the cross/flame and continue in their Wesleyan heritage that stretches so much further than 1968 and the forced acceptance of the UMC.

You seem very tired. Thank you for enduring and helping us all with this difficult matter. Bless you!

I am a Methodist but have never been a United Methodist. I have been a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church since 1975. I am white and my wife is black. I chose the AMEC over the UMC because most UMC churches at the time were segregated and did not seem open to interracial couples. I am appalled that so many compare interracial marriage to same sex marriage. Loving v. Virginia involved a man and a woman. Thus far few in the AME Church favor moving in the UMC direction. I hope and pray that we do not abandon our principles. I retire in 2026. I plan to contbue to stand for truth until God calls me home.

I would have disaffiliated even if our Church had not. It did. I was on the fence for other people staying in the UMC until our North Georgia district decided we could not disaffiliate. We had to sue to make it happen. They stole from us. They owe us legal fees. I love many who did not disaffiliate but I now have no respect or sympathy for the UMC leaders.

I noticed that your live feed video from Thursday afternoon was taken down for "copywrite infringement of UMC". They didn't want their "flock" to see this. Bishop Graves presiding was worse than fingernails on the chalkboard. As a member of a UMC in Alabama West Florida Conference who was denied disaffiliation, I am not part of their flock. My church and I are hostages. Leellen Willis

Please forgive my ignorance but are all of the new sexuality stances and language redefining marriage going to be printed in an updated BOD? I’m from Mississippi and my local church had a very nasty split. My husband and I “voted” with our $ in 2019 and then with our feet in 2023. Every one of my best friends stayed with UMC and told me that until the BOD was changed they were staying because “that will never happen in our church”.

Yes, everything decided at this conference will be published in a new Book of Discipline and Book of Resolutions. It will be in writing for all to see, undeniable in what was decided.

If at state conference the representatives don't ratify what was voted on at the general conference, does what was passed at general conference still apply to that particular state?
@plainspokenpod5 ай бұрын
Yes. Although you're meaning to say 'annual conference.' But yeah, if 2/3 of all annual conference delegates ratify it, then it will apply to 100% of the denomination, no matter where the votes comes from.

Jeffery, do you have the original language for the social principle on marriage before the amendment?
@davidmjacobson5 ай бұрын
From the 2016 book of discipline: "We affirm the sanctity of the marriage covenant that is expressed in love, mutual support, personal commitment, and shared fidelity between a man and a woman. We believe that God’s blessing rests upon such marriage, whether or not there are children of the union. We reject social norms that assume different standards for women than for men in marriage. We support laws in civil society that define marriage as the union of one man and one woman."

you NEVER need to stop being Methodist. Just stop being UMC.

@@garygardner1321 How do you stop being just United Methodist and continue being Methodist when the UMC won't let your church leave unless they pay a ransom (and now maybe they won't allow any to leave even if they pay a ransom) and there are no Methodist churches for 300 miles radius?
@LanceDever5 ай бұрын
I agree. There are several smaller churches that got out. A ways up the road. May have to check it out. Or see if there is a global methodist church starting in my town.
