I found your channel about a month ago and I just can’t stop watching. You’ve fostered a desire to read more nonfiction and I’ve added so many books to my TBR! I also read I am I am I am recently and it was fantastic. I can’t stop thinking about that memoir since I read it a few weeks ago!

I love watching your hauls, I know I'll always find books to add to my TBR shelf and your excitement is catching . I am really curious about the Botany books you mentioned as they sound interesting. I have always found animals as well as plants interesting and there was a time when I thought about becoming a Botanist or Marine Biologist. Even though my career of being a Botanist or Marine Biologist didn't happen, I do still have a love of learning about plants and living vicariously through those who have made a successful go at those careers or just love sharing their understanding of plants and animals. Happy Reading!

So many interesting books there! I bought The Secret Lives of Colour recently on a trip to the Art Gallery of New South Wales. I flipped through it on the train on the way home but haven’t settled down to reading it properly. I couldn’t resist that spotty textured cover.

John Berendt has written a book about birds called My Baby Blue Jays. It appears to be a photo essay of a nest of blue jays outside his window! Would be an obscure addition to your bird book collection! Lots of interesting titles in this haul. Will join in for October’s NF read!

I liked the Butchering Art quite a bit, it does a really good job of showing what a huge leap it was to get doctors to consider sanitation as a relevant and necessary part of surgery. It's pretty gory (but I guess that's obvious).

Bonk is a very interesting, educational and funny book. Easily one of my top 5 books of 2017. Stiff by Mary Roach is brilliant as well and I highly recommend it! I’ve had The Secret Lives of Color since it released so I clearly need to get reading...

Here is my struggle. Nothing excites me more than discovering new non-fiction books and deciding which ones to read. Knowledge is so appealing to me, I want it all! But, non-fiction can be pretty dense and I hate that I need a break in between books (during which I read fiction). There is simply not enough time. I wish 36 hour days were a thing.
@abookolive
@abookolive 6 жыл бұрын
I do have to admit, nonfiction does take me longer to read as well. I'd also appreciate a few more hours in the day...too much of my time is dedicated to work - I need more reading time!

As always, a lovely mix of books here. I love how you indulge your interest in nature. The book about the natural world in urban centers sounds really interesting and cute. I'm also curious about Chrysalis as I once saw a fantastic TedxEd video about her. I read Bonk a few years ago and it's still my favourite Mary Roach book. It's hilarious and informative. And Tattered Banners sounds like a good follow-up to the first Russian non-fiction book I read and loved recently, The Secret Lives of the Tsars.

Whenever you talk about seahorses I think of this release of 23 short films by Jean Painlevé. They are from the 20s through to the 80s. But the specific release from Criterion has a seahorse on the cover because he has one short called The Seahorse, which I've seen clips of and although it's dated in terms of technology it's still pretty interesting. He made other shorts about sea urchins, pigeons, octopus, and some other random animals.

I've read the Oscar Wilde biography (years ago but I remember it fondly) and A Room of One's Own (more recently and which is GREAT). Virginia Woolf has another long essay called Three Guineas about women, charity, and economic justice which is often bound with A Room of One's Own and which I think is even better - if you have it in that volume, definitely read it!

I love watching your non-fiction hauls, even though my interests in non-fiction rarely converge with yours. It just shows me how many interesting topics are out there to be explored. That being said, I am curious about the language book you hauled. And I have read Diving with seahorses in the original Norwegian edition. It was interesting, but I felt it held my hand a little too tightly through the explanations for my taste. But very readable.

Oh, An Alchemy of Mind sounds fab! I've seen the author's name around, I think she's written a book about butterflies as well. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Secret Lives of Colors and The Butchering Art, both titles I've been close to buying for a good while now! Gah, you have the best taste in nonfiction! So many titles here than sound interesting and I love the mix of subjects and sub-genres. I need more bird books in my personal library, too.

So I have got to ask: how do you go about finding such great and interesting nonfiction to purchase? I’m a bird keeper and am adding most of these bird books to my Amazon wish list. 😒 Just wondering how you stumble across so many gems....perusing a physical shop? Recommendations? Good luck on random online searches? Anyhow, love seeing your hauls Olive!

I head straight to the nonfiction section in every book store or book sale I go to & browse! At library book sales there isn't as much competition for space to stand as there is with fiction so I have time to pick books up & see what they're about.

Do you automatically add all of your hauled books to your to-read list? I love the way you choose a 'random' book from your to-read list using a random number generator and I was curious how you keep up with all your owned by not read books! Although I know you have an amazing memory. :)

I’d be curious to know, should you ever feel inclined to count. It might go back to my days doing inventory at Barnes & Noble, I don’t know. I added multiple books from this haul to my TBR. I’m becoming more and more interested in birds since my wife and I bought our house two years ago. I’d never seen a blue jay before we moved into our home, and we have a few who appear now and again. And I just think they’re jaw-droppingly beautiful things. I’ve been keeping the binoculars on the coffee table.
