I always mix old soil with new soil and compost (big bags are sold if you don't have a compost pile). I use a big planter as a mixing bowl and mix up the old and new soil. I have found it to work well over the years and it is a lot cheaper! Also, you can mix in some of the leaves and old plant cuttings. They will break down over time and add nutrients to the soil. Excited to watch your garden grow 🪴

Hi Amy, I use to buy new soil every year. Still do but less because I also mix old with new. I never bought compost though. I will definitly try that next year. I don't have a compost pile, I have so much yard waste, I can easily create one. How long does it take in average for the leaves to break down? Thank you for your suggestions.
