My opinion is the commercial netters should take a cut in quota size,jack up the price of Flounder about 1buck per pound,and make a slot limit for recreational. If I spend 200 dollars to bring my mom and daughter on a party boat,I should be nearly guaranteed dinner!.Allow 3 fish between 15 and 18 inches,and 2 over 18. Five decent Fluke is enough to feed a family of 4 or more.....By the way,got me a 7 pound Fluke 3 days ago! Pool Winner!

New York used to 21.5! Talking about 18! NY just got down to 19 this year. Last Year we were 2 inches higher then everyone on the coast!

@shaller77 The marine biologists with the best reputations say that the population levels are 4-10 times higher than there has ever been recorded. Govt just wants to raise money with licenses, permits and fines to pay for their pensions.

I love fishing for thier smaller cousin, the winter flounder...sadly no summer flounder where I live.

@shaller77 We question them because they ADMITTED that their sea bass numbers were way off, and they closed our season early for no good reason.

If the feds really wanted to rebuild the stocks they would raise the commercial size from 14, and stop netting them year round. Why do we have a short season with a 18 size limit when the netters can net 14 inch fish almost year round? That makes no sense.

Honestly i don't understand how these guys could question the people with degrees in marine sciences. Whats the point in destroying a fishery that you love? Anyway these people that are setting the regulations, are people who love to fish. Fishing is what draws most of the people into marine biology so they are just like every other recreational fishermen.

@RichUncleOyster Hehe, did you know salmon fishing was closed in California due to historically low returns? Did you know that strict rockcod and lingcod restrictions were made due to those fisheries collapsing in the last decade? West coast screwed our fisheries quite badly too...

Message to Lee Crockett: You really don't know what you are talking about Lee. I have been fishing for summer flounder for over 40 years. There were not many summer flounder in the sixties at all. Summer Flounder started to increase in numbers in the 1970s....before restrictions....and have continued to increase in numbers. You should not have a voice if you offer misinformation.

Every time I went fishing in florida we could keep just about every fish except red snapper. The only fish we ever seemed to catch were red snappers! We caught them by the hundreds! BUT you can not keep the red snappers because they are endangered!

Overfishing, and Government.... Gotta blame the people.... Much more people fishing = more bi-catch, more polution, more violators regarding shorts! Wait till the population goes to 500 million people in the US... Populace has to come down, and we really only need a 15 fish limit with 17" keeper......
@Thecoralreefaquarium13 жыл бұрын
the regs do more harm than good . most fluke returned die, there fore the regs should be 2 fish at 17 and 2 at maybe 20 this way less fluke get wasted and we get to go home with fish
@burt30830813 жыл бұрын
Not many fluke make it to 18 inches when they are netted at 14......

Picture spending $150 on a skiff, bait, and food for the day for just one fish! Let's put a size limit and population limit on people! It's commercial and rec fishing that's keeping it down! There is a thing called 'law of diminishing returns' I really believe there is just too many people, and that is with ANY resource! While Dem's and Rep's fight over who's right, you never hear argument over population....

What this video and many others like it failed to show is what is happening to the bottom to Habitat with a big fish that fluke wants fed on no longer swims into the New York Bight area. I've worth those Waters for well over 20 years and I seen the swing and change not just what the fluke but The Whiting as well. Intelligent effort on a federal level because two states are involved to replenish the bottom off the shores of New York and New Jersey much of the efforts and laws instituted by the dec or all go in vain. Because no matter how much fish recreational fishermen throwback the main body of fish that once swam in these Waters will never even come close to the numbers we had off of our beaches prior to the invention of the Lawrence C

The biggest concentration is found in the North East though... They migrate, but not that much... They usually are bunched up off the Carolinian Shelf during the winter... There they lie dormant. Until Feb, and make their Northward trek. Key = follow the Sandlance trek (speering). Kinda like thermocline, but for saltwater.
