Hey friends! Come explore our summer raised bed garden to see what we currently have growing - including our favorite flower and vegetable varieties. I’m also excited to share a few fun updates we’ve made to other parts of the homestead layout, including a new cane berry patch, chicken run expansion, and beautiful new pollinator orchard. I’ll share plenty of fun tidbits, tips, and garden inspo along the way, plus a little sprinkle of bird nerd action!
Thank you so much for wandering around with me today!

@HomesteadandChill
@HomesteadandChill 10 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Since we are in a temperate climate, we always start getting tomatoes way later than other people in warmer areas. Summer squash we always put out early though (usually by early April) and harvest a lot throughout the summer. We even typically fit in a second round of summer squash by about this time as the first plants start to dwindle.

One of the most beautiful gardens that I've seen! 2 questions: what do you have under your gravel/rocks and your mulch?
@HomesteadandChill
@HomesteadandChill 3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for the kind words! We did put down quality landscape fabric below the gravel and mulch to prevent weeds from growing up into our raised beds. Seeds will still sprout in the gravel itself but they are easy to remove as they can't root into anything. We have an article on our website which shows how we transformed the space if you'd like to see more in depth on the process: homesteadandchill.com/new-garden-reveal/

We use drip tape irrigation in our raised beds and run the system twice a week for close to 90 minutes. Although, how many days and for how long can vary depending on irrigation set up and environmental conditions.

Beautiful! So inspiring. Did you prepare the bed at the entrance of the garden for the native seeds at all?
@HomesteadandChill
@HomesteadandChill 8 ай бұрын
If you are referring to the pollinator area with artichokes, yarrow, salvia, and other plants, yes we did create and plant out that area as well. As far as the native wildflowers, we just scattered the seeds around the perimeter of our garden space and they grew on their own. I think we just threw wildflower seeds around during the winter and they eventually sprout and grow mostly during the spring and into the summer.

Beautiful. Wow you have done soooooo much in 2 years. How do you find the time? Is everything on irrigation? So impressed.
@HomesteadandChill
@HomesteadandChill 7 ай бұрын
Thank you so much, yes, everything is on automated irrigation for the most part. It is all a lot of work up front, yet once everything is hooked up and growing, it maintains itself pretty easily, we just have to keep up on harvesting.

I just watched your raised bed tutorial video before this and came to this video to see how they are faring. It looks like they are holding up well. Just curious how they are doing? Am looking to make raised beds now in a pretty wet climate so trying to figure out what is my best option. May need to buy the more expensive metal beds. Thank you!
@HomesteadandChill
@HomesteadandChill 3 ай бұрын
The raised beds are holding up well and we expect them to last at least 20 years. We have heard from people in the Pacific Northwest that have had redwood raised beds last for close to 30 years. If you have more extreme temperatures (hot and freezing conditions), it may put more stress on the raised beds. Metal beds are a great option as well but we like the ability to make different sized beds than what we can find with metal raised beds.

Hard to tell, is that gravel as your base in your garden area? Any issues or tips for having raised gardens placed directly on top of it with drainage? I guess as long as it's tall enough it's not an issue?
@HomesteadandChill
@HomesteadandChill Ай бұрын
Rain and moisture readily drain through the gravel, both outside and underneath our raised beds. We do smooth out the gravel areas underneath the raised beds so some beds have more or less gravel underneath them as we try and make them level.

Do you get deer in the area? if you do, how do you keep them out?
@HomesteadandChill
@HomesteadandChill 8 ай бұрын
We surprisingly don't get deer at all, mostly have to worry about the birds when seedlings are small and tender, aside from gophers of course. Our property is fairly well fenced in and while a deer could likely jump over the fence into our property, there haven't been any around to do so or they just don't do it at all.

We do have some pest damage but not much in regards to animals thankfully. For pests, we mostly have aphids, white flies, and cabbage moths to contend with. Creating a diverse garden space with a number of different plants will go a long ways in reducing pest damage.
