Great content Greg! I just bought house in Central Texas. It has almost 11,000 square feet of St. Augustine that isn't looking so good. Lots of weeds, other grasses, and dead/ bald spots. Missed my pre-emergent window, so now to aerate, add nutrients, and mow. I will definitely be taking your advice and look forward to your next video. Hopefully I will be able to get my lawn looking better. Thank you.

Thanks. Just be careful with St. Augustine with herbicides. Many say safe for lawns. Just read the fine print and be sure it's labeled for St. Augustine

You can hit your yard with image or weedstop for Lawns or both at the same time (both make st Aug versions i think they are purple colored tops) but image needs to sit for a few days then you water it in (for Bermuda version I'm guessing same for st Aug but read the labels. You can spray at 6am..literally not 7 am etc but as soon as enough light to walk the yard start it will be in the mid 70s temp so by 7 or 8am your done, split your yard in 2 or 3 and do it at 6am each time, so the temp/drift/evaporation issues are doable in Texas summer heat. Make sure to do low to mid rate of herbicide and not mow a few days b4 & imo a week after. Water 2 days b4 as well, get the weeds in growing mode. Then next year you can get on schedule. Also plug your st Aug grass in those bare spots, water them often. I use the pro plugger on Bermuda.

I’d love to have my own core aerator. They are just so expensive. Renting isn’t an option for me because it’s just too heavy to transport and I don’t have a truck nor trailer to transport one with. But my NE lawn definitely needs that. It’s always compacted and most of it is clay soil.

Could have a landscape company do it. Take a look at what they have first and see if it is like the TORO one I show in the video. May be 300 to 500 bucks for the average yard. You can also get a spiker and run it over the yard several times to get the air exchange and penetration of H2O into the soil. Wetting agents may help a little as well.

Check into a electric corded scarifier. Greenworks and sun Joe are 2 brands. Go with biggest amp/inch size. About 150 bucks, 100 bucks in off-season winter. Not an aerator but does an OK job at aerating for low cost and reasons you stated for not having a real aerator machine.

Herbicide with a hose end applicator. Please read label to ensure it is safe for your yard. With the active Quincloraq you will need to apply in early or late summer season (after august 15) for it to control crabgrass. Not to be used on Behiagrass carpet grass centipede St Augustine. Please read and follow label pd ad a.co/d/8hGngBJ

Golf Course Management Magazine on wetting agents that I spoke of in the video. 2 questions: 1st one, can you put down hydretain and the Hydro Holder wetting agent down at the same time? 2nd question, what is another option to core aeration? Liquid aeration? I ask since the crappy irrigation they installed on my new build only goes down a few inches. The last time I got core aerations done, they punctured a few pipes since they werent deep enough compared to the tines length/ cores size. TIA
@GregPhillips.22
@GregPhillips.22 2 ай бұрын
Ya ...that is an issue if you have irrigation. I would use only one wetting agent at a time. The performance can very on soil type. Could use one one year if you are not happy with it try the other. I would try the hydretain product first just because the popularity of it. The H2O Maximizer performed very well according to the GSM article I put in the comments. If you are in an area where drought is an issue. I would go with that since the study showed it performed so well. As far as liquid aeration I have not used those. So can't really speak to those products. There is also light slicing or spiking often to get the air exchange and water into the soil that aeration gets you. I would slice greens during the summer on occasion. I would see a color difference the next couple of days afterward. So that works well.
